"Dämon Zirkus" (1923) By Emil Justitz

As time goes by to watch silent films for this German count is a complicated matter due to the ailments of aristocratic old age but fortunately there are always Schloss remedies such as using an ebony monocle in order to distinguish the blurred images unspooled in the Schloss silent private cinema. At least trouble hearing is not a problem...
But in spite of these remedies to watch “Dämon Zirkus” was a hard job for this German Count because of not understanding so many strange words in this film that has only survived in a partial version and, worst of all it has only Russian intertitles. Russian, of course, is a bizarre language useful only to stir up the proletarian masses. This film was directed by an unknown German director, Herr Emil Justitz, a film director with a short and undistinguished career ( his most important films were directed during the early 20’s ). He did however have time to found his own production studio making films using the same actors again and again.

Due to those aristocratic difficulties, that is to say, to knowing only elegant languages as German or Latin it is not possible to do a complete synopsis about what happens in this film. The most noteworthy aspect of this film it is that is set in the circus, thus it is part of that silent genre that this German count loves so much. This film evoked in this German count, memories of the story written by Herman Bang’s “De Fire Djaevle” ( a love triangle, blackmail, trapeze artists, tragic circus death… ). The last part of "Damon Zirkus" is the most interesting, in spite of not understanding much of what has gone on before, we do have poignancy in the situation of the principal character, the famous silent actor Herr Carl De Vogt, as he is degraded from the trapeze to the clown troupe, and in the end seems to be experiencing his own special atonement.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this Germanic Count is trying to understand what the servants means in their ordinary language when they say “guaranteed minimum wage”.

A medida que va pasando el tiempo, contemplar filmes para éste Conde germánico se va convirtiendo en una ardua tarea debido a los achaques aristocráticos de la vejez, aunque afortunadamente siempre hay remedios en el Schloss para conseguir distinguir las borrosas imagines que se proyectan en el teatro privado del mismo, tales como usar un monóculo de ébano, pues la sordera no es ningún problema con dichos filmes.
Pero aún a pesar de esos remedios, contemplar “Dämon Zirkus” fue un duro trabajo para este Conde germánico al no poder entender los extraños caracteres que figuraban en la única copia incompleta que ha sobrevivido de dicho filme hasta nuestros días, rótulos escritos en ruso, un idioma éste solamente útil para agitar a las masas proletarias.
“Dämon Zirkus” fue dirigido por el desconocido director germano Herr Emil Justitz, director poseedor de una corta y anodina carrera ( sus filmes más importantes fueron dirigidos a principios de los años 20 ) en la cual tuvo tiempo para crear su propia productora con la cual poder hacer sus filmes con los mismos actores una y otra vez.

Debido a esos aristocráticos contratiempos, esto es, conocer solamente elegantes lenguas como el germano o el latín, no ha sido posible conocer qué sucedía realmente en dicho e incompleto filme, siendo el aspecto más notable de esta obra el que transcurre en el ambiente circense, ése que éste Conde germánico gusta tanto, además de evocar “Dämon Zirkus” recuerdos de la obra escrita por Herman Bang “De Fire Djaevle” ( triángulo amoroso, sobornos, artistas del trapecio y muertes trágicas circenses ), siendo la última parte del filme la más interesante pues a pesar de todo se entiende la situación del actor principal, el famoso actor silente Herr Carl De Vogt, degradado del trapecio a formar parte de la trouppe de los payasos, que al final de la obra sufre su particular expiación.

Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este Conde germánico está intentando descifrar que es lo que pretende decir la servidumbre en su ordinario lenguaje cuando exclaman “salario mínimo interprofesional”.
