"The White Shadow" (1924) By Graham Cutts

During the summer of 2012, the discovery of an incomplete copy ( 3 of 6 reels survived ) of “The White Shadow” (1924) by Herr Graham Cutts at the “New Zealand Film Archive”, originated a great fuss around the world ( well, maybe not a GREAT fuss; it’s well known that German counts like to exaggerate facts for the sake of silent films ).  The excitement wasn’t over the fact that another “lost” silent was found or that it was directed by Herr Cutts -Nein!l-  the fuss was caused because Herr Alfred Hitchcock collaborated in this film as assistant director, editor, art director and scenarist.

Such lot of noise can be appreciated by this German count except for the mistake made by some in the long haired media (who previously paid no attention to silent films) who awarded the authorship of the film entirely to Herr Hitchcock, ignoring Herr Cutts, a major British director during the Silent Era and who was primarily responsible for the film.

“The White Shadow” is certainly a solid, very interesting film on its own, whatever Hitchcock’s participation in the picture.  It tells the story of twin sisters (both played by Frau Betty Compson ), two very different souls in character who share the same lover but end up with different fates.  The two sisters are a study in contrasts:  Frau Georgina is a responsible fraulein who stays at home with her parents on their estate while Frau Nancy is a wild girl who runs away from home to Paris where she smokes a lot and plays cards at a cabaret, “The Cat Who Laughs” ( it seems that there are many merry animals in France…). There is also around an American, Herr Robin Field ( Herr Clive Brook ) who meets and  falls in love with Nancy on a boat when both are returning to England, although he later switches his affections to Georgina (without knowing who she really is).

It must be said that the drama and the atmosphere of the picture are certainly remarkable, and Frau Compson is excellent in her dual role.  The careful art direction is also noteworthy (well, Herr Hitchcock does splendid work here), and Herr Cutts achieves an intense dramatic affect and throws in a dose of morality as well.  The authorship of the film clearly belongs to Herr Cutts but, if one digresses for a moment and insists on finding some trace of Hitchcock in the overall work, there is a certain parallel between the impersonation in this film and Herr Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” but this may be just the fancy of an old German count.

Finally, this Herr Graf would like to alert silent film fans around the world that the “National Film Preservation Foundation” will stream “The White Shadow” from the NFPF website through January 15, 2012, so take your seats at once in your commoner homes and enjoy this picture for free! (Danke Schon, NFPF!)

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must play strip baccarat at “The Cat Who Laughs”.

"The Lodger; A Story Of The London Fog" (1927) By Alfred Hitchcock

During the first decades of the last century, the city of London was well-known for its many objects of local colour; to say London was to say Big Ben and by extension, the Houses of the Parliament, Buckingham Palace, the Queen Mother, the gin-tonic, the river Thames, the fog and Jack the Ripper.

But the city’s most infamous murderer did his work in the past, so the British film director Herr Alfred Hitchcock updated the celebrated story and created “The Avenger”, his own mysterious assassin at large in London.

“The Lodger; A Story of the London Fog” (1927) is an excellent silent film and probably the best one made by Herr Hitchcock during his silent period. The film has all those ingredients and virtues one associates with Herr Alfred. This German count especially appreciates the masterful way the suspense is created, leading the audience down different tricky paths of mystery and intrigue. Besides the outstanding film narrative and excellent camerawork, there is also a good deal of wit: the Londoners, like any other European commoners, watch with fascination the story of this dangerous criminal who terrifies a whole population and defies the police. An added attraction are the appearances of many nice girls in negligees; what more is needed?

There are a lot of scenes in “The Lodger” wherein Herr Hitchcock’s talent for creating mysterious atmosphere is well demonstrated; the influence of German cinema-with which Herr Hitchcock was very familiar-is also apparent in his technique. Some admirers of Herr Hitchcock have told this Herr Von that themes common in later Hitchcock films can be noted in this one: blondes and fetishism, the sensual kiss between the lodger ( Herr Ivor Novello ) and Daisy ( Frau June ) and the scene in which the lodger wants to enter the bathroom where June is taking a bath. These will be developed and improved later by Herr Hitchcock during his talkie career, but this is a completely different story for this German count.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must take lodgings tonight with a Teutonic rich heiress.

"A Cottage On Dartmoor" (1929) By Anthony Asquith

From time to time, it is very laudable for this German count to re-watch some of those silent films of his aristocratic youth. Overall, this in order to check if the passage of time has positively or negatively influenced his recollection of the remarkable aspects of such films. That’s not to mention that fortunately many of those films after such long time are now cleaned and restored -- nothing in common with those rotten and blurred nitrates that are stored at this Herr Graf’s gloomy cellar that necessarily need an extra pair of monocles each time that they are shown at the Schloss theatre.

This time such advisable aristocratic and nostalgic film habits had excellent artistic results. That’s because after 70 years from its official release, “A Cottage On Dartmoor”, a film directed by Herr Anthony Asquith, preserves intact its many and excellent virtues. The perfect word that summarizes the merits of that British film: virtuosity.

Herr Anthony Asquith skilful film direction begins as the films starts. It introduces a convict that escaped from prison running away along Dartmoor meadows. With the sole purpose of revenge, he tries to find the girl that causes him imprisonment; when finally he finds her, a fascinating flashback starts.

A superb display of film technique can be seen in the film. There are such as perfect images ( Expressionism influences are obvious in the film, in its obscure and visual conception ) concatenations or fascinating visual metaphors ( the use of the camera is astounding: remarkable and imaginative camera angles that scrutinizes the tormented soul and evil intentions of the main character of the film ). It depicts an intriguing, thrilling and original story. A barber, Joe ( Herr Uno Henning ) falls in love with a manicurist, Sally ( Dame Norah Baring ) in the same place where both work. Joe is rejected by her and doesn’t accept that ultimately Sally loves a client, Harry ( Herr Hans Adalbert Schlettow ). Consumed by jealousy, tries to murder Harry.

It has a perfect “tempo” in order to explain and show such a tormented love story that will finish with a poetic, sorrowful ending.
Only one thing is lacking in seeing the film and is Dame Norah Baring’s performance. Probably she is so stiff, inexpressive and frigid due to the abuse of the use of tea -- that awful beverage that usually is drunk by commoners and even eccentric aristocrats in the perfidious Albion. But that’s a minor flaw that doesn’t damage excessively the excellent artistic merits of such remarkable film.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must go to a decadent soirée pretty well-combed.

"The Battle Of The Somme" (1916) By Geoffrey Malins & John McDowell

The documentary is a genre that was born at the same time as the cinema itself because at the beginning the cinematographer was there to reflect and capture daily events of varying degrees of importance: the arrival of a train to a station, the exit of the proletarian masses from the factories or even the exciting view of the parishioners going in and out of church. It followed that the new invention was a perfect instrument to display images, costumes and events that would interest older people as well as the new long haired generation.

But “The Battle Of The Somme” it is not a trivial show of mundane events during the early times of the cinema; it is a document of a great importance for film history and history itself.
The film depicts the terrible and largest WWI battle; it happened in a long front north and south of the River Somme in northern France and was a huge battle in which more than a million people from different nationalities died.
The film is an exceptional document of the horrors of war that shows the great magnitude of that that tragic war or really any war. This conflict changed Europedrastically ( the end of the innocence ) and, even worse, rather than deter future wars, it only led the way to the even more terrible WWII.
The film was photographed, not directed,-there is a big difference between thoseterms- by the British official cinematographers Geoffrey Malins and John McDowell whose primary intention was to film such an important battle but since they ended up shooting quite a lot footage, the British Topical Committee for War Films decided to release it as the first feature-length documentary film that depicts war combat.
The film is structured and divided into different parts in which can be seen the different war preliminaries and the consequences of the battle, besides the tactics and arms used in the WWI. Since it was released during the war the movie functions as a propaganda film for the British Army. And of course it exposes to the civilians the horrors of war that was still raging. The film was shown in Great Britain and many countries of the world while the battles continued in France.

“The Battle Of The Somme” it is an exceptional war document of historical importance, a silent film that, although it seems a redundancy, doesn’t need words.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave, because this German Count wants to wish that those disasters of war never happen again.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"The Woman He Scorned" (1929) By Paul Czinner

"THE WOMAN HE SCORNED" (also known as "THE WAY OF LOST SOULS" or, as this German Count would go on to say, also known in the frenchified tongue as "Son Dernier Tango" considering that the intertitles of this film are written in this last language) is a worthy silent film. This aristocratic German Count says that in light of the fact that "The Woman He Scorned" has a very remarkable first part, comprising those scenes taking place in the port, and most specifically at the bar, the place in which Louise (Pola Negri) and Maxim (Rehmann) get to know each other.

In the claustrophobic, rarefied atmosphere of that port, amongst plenty of riffraff, Miss Pola fascinates the audience as a woman leading a dissolute life; in that sick locale she gets to know, with wearisome insistence, the lonely and sullen town lighthouse-keeper. Miss Pola attempts to change her miserable life through her dear lighthouse-keeper but you know, because she had been a very bad woman in that rotten harbor atmosphere, before long she will have a visitor who will let her know that it is not very easy to wipe the slate clean and start again however much she may now be a happy housewife who even affectionately prepares breakfast and dinner for her dearest lighthouse-keeper.

A very remarkable film with some Expressionistic influences that this German Count recommends highly to you, not forgetting two other exceptional films by Herr Czinner, "FRAULEIN ELSE" (1928) (see German aristocratic comments in the blog) and "NJU" (1924), this one undoubtedly indebted to the German Expressionist glories and the undeniably pleasing presence of Miss Bergner, wife and muse of the German director, in a film that depicts another harmful menage-a-trois (despite the fact that Herr Czinner belongs to the middle class it seems that he was a little too loose-living for this German Count).

And now if you'll allow me I must leave you momentarily because, as a devotee of La Negri, this German aristocrat must busy himself with whipping his servants.
