"Thomas Graals Bästa Barn" (1918) By Mauritz Stiller

“Thomas Graals Bästa Barn” ( Thomas Graal’s First Child ) (1918) was the sequel to “Thomas Graals Bästa Film” (1917), again with Herr Mauritz Stiller directing and starring the same Swedish team as the first one, Herr Victor Sjöstrom and Frau Karin Molander playing the main characters. Some longhaired youngsters say that the sequel is never as good as the original but this film disproves them and is even more cynical and amusing than the original.

Frau Bessie, once a madcap, aristocratic and modernen Swedish fraulein, has become now a whimsical and conservative Swedish burgess after her marriage to Herr Thomas Graal. The destabilization of the marriage begins right at the wedding (which contains some hilarious incidents) when Frau Bessie announces the first Graal child must be a girl, creating a terrible conflict with her husband who is hoping for a boy. It takes a scandal to finally end the war between man and wife.

As even any longhaired youngster can see from the main title, finally a baby boy will be born but this doesn’t mean that Frau Bessie will be at ease; she becomes very interested in new child rearing methods and neglects her own beauty care, ignoring Herr Graal entirely and making him plot how to regain his former, sexy wife.

The modernity of “Thomas Graals Bästa Barn” is as noteworthy as its many technical virtues. The film illustrates that matrimonial conflicts in the 10s of the last century are not so different from those in the 10s of this modernen age. In a sharp and tenchant way we see the peril of monotony in marriage and how children can ruin passion between a couple, a situation typical of the life of commoners but, fortunately, aristocrats don’t suffer such disgraces. Wives of commoners and wives of aristocrats usually do what they please but husbands will deny this (commoners in their taverns, aristocrats in their clubs). Happily Herr Graal’s clever plan finally succeeds; they recapture the thrill of their early relationship, no mean feat when boredom threatens a marriage and the husband despairs when his once appealing wife becomes fat after motherhood. Herr Stiller captures these situations with great wit in this excellent picture.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must avoid first-born aristocrats.

"Thomas Graals Bästa Film" (1917) By Mauritz Stiller

Frau Bessie is a Swedish, madcap und aristocratic fraulein, too modernen for German aristocrat parameters certainly because she leaps at the occasion of running away from home in order to live thrilling adventures away from her rich parents. In the city, Frau Bessie will meet an uninspired writer, Herr Thomas Graal, who will hire her as his personal secretary and soon become fatally attracted to her.

“Thomas Graals Bästa Film” ( Thomas Graal’s Best Film ) (1917) is a good example of the early film mastery achieved by the great Swedish director, Herr Mauritz Stiller; the film is a sarcastic, skilful comedy absolutely brilliant in its style and with a very funny story.

The film depicts the Swedish idle aristocratic life of Frau Bessie and her parents who, like other European aristocrats, spend most of their time doing nothing ( this can be hard work and requires years of experience and practice to achieve excellence in these matters, ja wohl! ) . However, Herr Graals’s commoner life is equally idle since he lacks inspiration and prefers wool-gathering ( a shameful habit this for a commoner, neglecting his duties and obligations! ); thus the different social classes are caricatured and satirized in a hilarious way in many sequences in the film.

Frau Bessie is a cathartic character who abandons tranquillity to become an independent fraulein who makes her own decisions and will influence the people around her. She comes to terms with her parents about her new life and inspires Herr Graal to do a film script about her adventures (even though we know she’s often lying about them).

The film narrative is brilliant; Herr Stiller intertwines fiction (Herr Graal’s script) and reality on many levels in an excellent job of editing. It’s a tricky balancing act that only great directors can succeed at. An added bonus, in addition to the many outdoor settings, is the look at the early film business and filmmaking (which adds still another dimension to the back and forth between the real and the imaginary).

The film stars Herr Victor Sjöström (later to become a great director himself) and Frau Karin Molander, who will work closely with both Sjöström and Stiller. So much talent explains why early Swedish silent films were so inventive and ahead of their time

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must prevent modernen aristocratic Swedish frauleins from entering through the Schloss gates.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Sangen Om Den Eldröda Blomman" (1919) By Mauritz Stiller

“Sangen Om Den Eldröda Blomman” ( “Song Of The Scarlet Flower” ) was a recent and remarkable silent surprise for this Herr Von; the oeuvre is an excellent Herr Stiller silent film that this German count watched in a newly restored and tinted copy. It combines the well-known aesthetics, technical improvements and artistic merits for which the Nordic director was known and praised since those early silent times till today.

The film tells of the merry and carefree love life of young Olof ( Herr Lars Hanson ) a woodsman who during his search for true love, seduces many fauleins ( just like this German aristocrat… well, not exactly because the purpose of this Herr Von’s seduction of rich fräulein heiresses are their great fortunes… ). He will suffer disappointment and deception, all those problems that turn up in any loving relationship. Finally he will find responsibility and maturity, learning during his particular quest that his actions always have consequences in different degrees to the people around him. This Herr Von can describe “Sangen Om…” as a kind of coming of age film, the special introspective growth toward maturity of a free and easy youngster.

As this German count said before, the film displays Stiller’s characteristic artistic virtues. ; in the first part of the film, we can see elements of comedy, not exactly like the comedy of intrigues in other Stiller films, but humor of a more cheerful sort, highlighting the self-involvement of our hero. Olof ‘s frivolous flirtations with the different girls eventually turn romantic and then turn into drama. There is conflict in the troubled relationship between Olof and his father and later with the father of his beloved. The beautiful and wild natural landscapes of Norrland and northern Sweden lend the tale a certain power and is characteristic of Herr Stiller’s other silents where Nature emerges as an important character in the story. This is strongly reflected throughout the film but especially during the frantic scene wherein Olof descends into the troubled waters of a river, a beautiful metaphor for the hardships that our hero has to endure until he finds himself.

“Sangen Om Den Eldröda Blomman” is an excellent, beautiful film, a solid, technically perfect and intricate production of 1919 that demonstrates once again the importance of Herr Stiller for silent film history.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must return to Teutonic nature.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitizien

"Alexander Den Store" (1917) By Mauritz Stiller

In a small provincial town there is a hotel run by one of those eccentric cooks of long ago who made generous meals that have nothing in common with the extravagant restaurateurs of nowadays and their meagre menus. The manager is named after Alexander the Great and in his restaurant the town bourgeoisie meet and discuss various issues, especially matters of the heart. Morals are part of the conversations and prove to be complicated issues even for strict and serious Nordics.

“Alexander Den Store” (1917) is another funny early Herr Stiller comedy of intrigues in which the skilfulness of the Finnish director in managing different stories featuring peculiar characters is shown at its best.
The miscellaneous eccentrics are very well delineated in a grotesque way perfectly in accordance with a story full of dubious behaviour and questionable morals. It’s low comedy full of sarcasm but still very proper. This Herr von suspects that some of Herr Lubitsch’s early comedies could have been influenced by this film, especially with its gallery of odd characters.

The film uses the elaborate and technically very modern film narratives so well-known in Herr Stiller’s elegant comedies ( parallel stories, different characters who finally are directed toward the same final objective ) . Surely even the new longhaired generation would find much that is remarkable and valid in this film, even though it was produced in the mid tens.

“Alexander Den Store” is a good example of Herr Stiller’s professionalism and artistic efficacy and while it is characteristic of Herr Stiller’s early comedies it is probably more cynical and bold ( the Nordic censors with no sense of humour, a characteristic that is common with any censor, considered some scenes inappropriate and later had them removed).

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count is famished; perhaps a fat Teutonic heiress would be satisfying.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Balettprimadonnan" (1916) By Mauritz Stiller

As happened with the majority of silent film directors, Herr Mauritz Stiller’s oeuvre has suffered many losses with the passage of time and only a dozen of his films have survived till today. Every once in awhile though a silent miracle happens and forgotten reels are found in humid vaults of distant countries. One such occasion occurred fifteen years ago when in Saragossa ( it seems that not only manuscripts are found in that Spanish city… ) a fragment of “Balettprimadonnan” (1916) was discovered, much to the joy of silent connoisseurs.

So even though it is frustrating for a silent fan to watch a film that is incomplete, these mutilated editions are still welcome because of the careful and lovingly made restorations created for the purpose of giving the viewer some idea what the film was like in its original release.

Having in mind these limitations, watching “Balettprimadonnan” is still highly recommended. It tells the story of a gypsy dancer ( Frau Jenny Hasselquist ) who is discovered accidentally by a violin player ( Herr Lars Hanson ); fame and a good social status will be waiting for the two artists after they meet each other but also jealousy and sorrow, always the price of fame, certainly.

The reels found in Saragossa include the audition of Frau Anjuta, the gypsy dancer, to a ballet-dance academy and the final part of the film, the most interesting and beautiful one, genuine Stiller. This includes a duel ( that aristocratic pastime that this Herr Von likes so much )as well as a thrilling sequence with our heroine running wild through a snowy landscape trying to avoid a calamity between the men that are fighting for her love ( the ending sounds a bit like the climax to Herr Clarence Brown’ “Flesh And The Devil ( 1926) , also with Lars Hanson and Herr Stiller’s advanced pupil Frau Garbo ), a lyrical and beautiful ending wherein Nature (Swedish style) is also an important dramatic character. This is typical of the importance in Herr Stiller’s later work where cold landscapes carry great artistic weight, evocative and dramatic.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must wear in a Teutonic way a ballet-skirt in tonight’s soirée.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Vingarne" (1916) By Mauritz Stiller

During his silent career, Herr Mauritz Stiller had no problem with different film genres; he moved easily ( as does this German count who flirts with a fat Teutonic rich heiress and then goes to a fatter and-even better- richer one ) from sophisticated, elegant comedies of intrigue, to drama, historical or epic films, as well as literary adaptations. One of the latter is “Vingarne” (1916) ( The Wings ), based on the book “Mikäel” written by Herr Herman Bang. Years later, namely in 1924, the Danish Herr Carl Theodor Dreyer did a successful version for the silent screen using the novel’s title.

Herr Stiller’s film adaptation of the novel excludes absolutely the homoerotic component that is evident in Herr Dreyer’s “Mikäel” and that was likely part of the book as well, a novel that this German count hasn’t read due to the great effort that exercise causes to the delicate aristocratic body. Herr Stiller’s film focuses exclusively on the conventional although intricate story about the problems that the sculptor Zoret ( Herr Egil Eide ) has with Mikäel (Herr Lars Hanson), a young friend who poses for a sculpture of “Icarus”. The model accidentally meets a capricious countess ( Frau Lili Bech ) who needs to spend a lot of money for her whims ( you know, counts or countesses have a lot of extra expensive habits… ) Herr Zoret strongly disapproves of the relationship.

So, there is not a subtle or hidden homosexual meaning in “Vingarne” “only” a troubled relationship seen from different perspectives, an interesting though conventional story of greed, friendship, and manipulation. Unfortunately, the film fails due to overacted, stilted performances that become a festival of histrionics making the film seem even older than it is. The actors keep getting in the way of the impeccable art direction and sets.

“Vingarne” included originally a now lost framing device that showed Herr Mauritz Stiller creating this film. The film reconstruction that this Herr Graf watched includes stills and intertitles of the missing footage; a shame because that lost footage seems for this German count more interesting than the main body of the film. The creating of the film is done in a “dramatized” way, especially when Herr Stiller and his crew are involved. This film within a film is a clever idea and a good example of Herr Stiller’s inventiveness in searching for original narratives for his films and it redeems “Vingarne” to some extent in spite of its flaws.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must take wing for tonight’s soirée.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

-/-

"Kärlek Och Journalistik" (1916) By Mauritz Stiller

From time to time is very advisable to return to the early films of important silent film directors in order to observe how they polished and improved their work in the course of time before they achieved the mastery that so influenced the careers of other directors.

“Kärlek Och Journalistik” ( Love And Journalism ) (1916) is probably Herr Mauritz Stiller’s earliest surviving oeuvre, a delicious comedy that proves that even in those cold lands, the Nordics had something similar to a sense of humour. This elegant film demonstrates the elements one finds in Herr Stiller’s later famous comedies. “Kärlek Och Journalistik” is a medium-length film, well paced and with a story that needs no updating and is still absolutely valid today. Journalism is the subject but it’s the fascinating world of old school journalism with methods far different from today (though there were paparazzis and witty fräulein reporters and demanding editors back then too) when the new longhaired technologies and their dangerous new machines are revolutionizing and reinventing that old job.

The basics of Herr Stiller’s later work are very recognizable in this stylish Nordic comedy of intrigue, especially in the director’s handing of complex situations and the choice of excellent actors like Frau Karin Molander und Richard Lund who collaborated with the Finnish director in many of his films.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must read a Teutonic tabloid.

"Gösta Berlings Saga" (1924) By Mauritz Stiller

Together with Stroheim and Murnau, Herr Mauritz Stiller is one of the great directors in cinema history who solely directed silent films during his whole career. Even though the majority of his work has been lost forever, some titles have survived: Herr Arnes Pengar (1919), Sangen Om Dem Eldröda Blomman (1919), “Erotikon” (1920) and “Gunnar Hedes Saga” (1923). These famous films are enough to confirm that Mauritz Stiller has been and are one of the best directors of the seventh art through its long history. He has been able to elevate the “silent art” to that great level that we can still now enjoy and appreciate.

One important turn in his work was his last movie made in Sweden: “Gösta Berlings Saga”. This film had disastrous consequences for his career, as this Germanic count will narrate later on.

Stiller, together with Victor Sjöström, were the “father founders” of the Swedish cinema. Together with Sjöström, he is the most famous film director of the 20’s. This notoriety was not only in his country because his film “Sangen On Den Eldröda Blomman”(1918) made him world famous, a status confirmed definitively with that masterpiece “Herr Arnes Pengar” (1919).

It is very difficult to write about Stiller, even in Germanic, because it is not easy to find all the adjectives to define his great career; his work had the beauty of a great stylist able to make master pieces in such different genres as “saga” (those great stories of the Swedish literature) or that most sophisticated comedy (“Erotikon” (1920) ). He was a director who had a big influence, even on German directors as Herr Lubitsch who was then defining his unmistakable “touch”.

“The legend of Gösta Berling” is related to the “epic” part of his work. There are big stories replete with character with different backgrounds in several situations that the Nordic director manages very well.

The film is an adaptation of a book written by the famous Swedish author Selma Lagerloff, who by the way, had many disagreements with Stiller’s adaptation (ah…., the eternal “auteur” ego problems, almost as classic among the aristocrats’!). Changes were made due to Stiller’s lack of respect for the text, who changed it according to the necessity of the film, more specifically, according to the “visual needs” of it. As this Germanic count mentioned before, Stiller is a great stylist, always looking for visual beauty (although it is important to mention that he does not look for hollow images or simple postcards). His interest is very different. In a way, he is delighted on the aesthetics of certain scenarios to show us the most miserable side, the squalor of the whole surroundings.

In spite of those stylistics disagreements between author and director, this Teutonic count asserts that the cinematographic adaptation is excellent. Keeping in mind the fact that it is a very dense and complicated novel, filled with characters.

“The Leyend of Gösta Berling” tells us the story of Gösta, a drunkard minister who is expelled from the priesthood for his “habit” (weird Nordic tradition, those expellings…). But the bigger problem with his parish is his truthfulness. Jobless, Gösta finishes in Värmland, a state managed by the people of Ekeby.

Gösta’s strong personality and his special charm with women will bring him many problems. Two powerful families full of hypocrisy, lies and adultery; rule two estates in Värmland and they will surround Gösta with plenty of intrigue, confusing him and costing him a lot of problems to which he was a stranger to begin with.

Only at the end of the movie, will our hero will get his redemption from the hand of Elisabeth, performed by the fascinating Greta Garbo.

It has to be mentioned that for many long-haired, Stiller is still “only” known as the finder and creator of the divine Greta Garbo; which it is true because thanks to Stiller, Ms Garbo got her first great film performance due to her appearance in this movie. This is a great injustice because reduces Stiller’s creations to a second place.

It is compulsory to praise all the actor’s great interpretations in this movie. They were really memorable, not forced at all if we take into consideration that around that time it was something very difficult to obtain with certain adaptations or argumentative plots that tended to excesses. It is a movie where also big natural spaces predominate, another of recurrent theme of Stiller. This movie combines the beauty of the frozen landscapes with the danger in them.

As this Germanic count said before, the success that “The legend of Gösta Berling” brought to Stiller and Ms Garbo had a different repercussion in their future careers: for her, the beginning of a mythic career, a cinematographic icon that prevails and still impresses us. For him, the beginning of the end as a director when he started a new phase in the United States that lasted for four unhappy years.

Watching the formal and stylist beauty of “The legend of Gösta Berling”, one realises, even the oblivious Germanic aristocracy, the great loss for the cinema that occurred with Stiller’s premature death. He was a fundamental director for both the Nordic and global cinema. His great work has been timeless.

And now, if you allow me, I have to leave you momentarily because this Germanic count has an appointment with a Swedish sweetie.

"Erotikon" (1920) By Mauritz Stiller

Insects are very similar to people in their sexual lives, as the entomologist Herr Leo Charpentier ( Anders de Wohl ) knows; some insects, like some people, are bigamists, others monogamists, and the boldest are even polygamists, not to mention the “Ipstypographus” who has three females!

Charpentier’s niece Marthe ( Karin Molander ) secretly loves her uncle, and Charpentier’s wife Irene ( Tora Teje ) loves Baron Felix ( Vilhem Bryde ), and as well the sculptor Preben Wells, a friend of the whole family ( Lars Hanson ) loves Irene, but that one is an unrequited love… so, that’s what “Erotikon”, directed by the great Swedish director Herr Mauritz Stiller, is: a film about love and insects.

“Erotikon” is a film that can be divided in two different parts: in its first part it is a high comedy with a remarkable pace and very dynamic editing; the film characters live in villas, go to the city by taxi, fly in aeroplanes and go to the theatre; in this last scene the performance of the ballet “Schaname” is used by Stiller as a metaphor or analogy to explain in a subtle way ( as with the sexual life of insects ) that such complicated relationships have always existed, in ancient Persia ( the ballet tells the story of the Shah’s favourite who loves prince Torie, another unrequited love with a tragic ending ) as in modern Sweden ( the entwined relationships of the main characters of the film ).
In the last part of “Erotikon” the pace is more slow and static ( focused to solve those complicated love affairs ), the film more romantic, but not forgetting the comedy anyway, emphasizing for this German Count the surprising ending, modern and very advantageous for the film heroes' love interests.

“Erotikon”, filmed in 1920, is another great example of the modernity of the silent Swedish cinema ( in editing, acting, and even the audacity to show non-conventional marital relationships ), Herr Mauritz Stiller being one of its more important exponents.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must investigate the Ipstypographus' secrets.

"Gunnar Hedes Saga" (1923) By Mauritz Stiller

To say nowadays that Herr Mauritz Stiller is one of the most important northern directors and, by extension, of the history of the cinema, is not a novelty, but this aristocrat still gets surprised by his masterly direction when he has the opportunity to see or rescue films from the mentioned cineaste that where unknown for him.

This happens with the film “Gunnar Hedes Saga”, an excellent piece, sometimes masterful, where we can find the best references and usual characteristics of Stiller’s cinema. Deep and tormented (psychological) human portraits, shown here by the difficult relationship between mother and son or the convenience between the practical life sense or the choice of art as a “modus vivendi”, as well as the natural spaces, harsh northern landscapes as decisive and active main characters of his stories. It is important to notice, as an added value, that the most prestigious Stiller’s films were adaptations of Swedish Selma Lagerlöf’s masterpieces as well as Julius Jaenzon’s cinematography.

“Gunnar Hedes Saga” ’s narrative vitality is specifically celebrated during the reindeers’ stampede scene which will have severe consequences for the main character Gunnar Hede ( Einar Hanson ), leaving him unbalanced and half crazy until he meets again with Ingrid ( Mary Johnson) and also for the film’s composition which fluctuates between the realism and oneiric atmosphere perfectly assembled here.

Concluding, this is an exceptional, lyric and modern film, the quintessence of one of the greatest directors of the cinema’s history.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave due to the fact that all this snow has recalled to this German Count his aristocratic stays in Tyrol, without reindeers of course, but full those luxurious hotels with rich Alpine heiresses.
