“Snow White”, directed in the far away year 1916 by Herr J. Searle Dawley, is a beautiful film adaptation of the classic Grimm fairy tale.This film was considered long lost but fortunately a copy was found in the“Filmmuseum”, a kind of Dutch film archives where the nitrates are not very well arranged, certainly nothing like this German aristocrat's film archives where the films are perfectly organized and classified in a German way, so in this way no film is lost, including Herr Stroheim’s “Greed” (in its 9 hours complete version… ). Anyway, thanks to the good luck of finding this lost silent film, every silent film fan can now appreciate Herr Searle's talent.
“Snow White” ( this German count doesn’t think it necessary to relate this well-know story about beauty competitions in the Middle Ages ), as this aristocrat said before, is a visually lovely film in which the art direction and the sets are absolutely outstanding, not to mention the make-up, some charming special effects and even a little animated sequence.
As it happens with some remarkable early silent film versions of fairy tales, there is a remarkable concern to depict and recreate in detail the magical atmosphere of those original stories on the screen and this one is a perfect recreation of the tale. It must said though that in those classic film productions, there is not usually a trace of transgression or boldness ( which is scarcely necessary most of the time since the original stories are full of cruelty ),and they are conservative and polite adaptations intended to be harmless and wholesome entertainment for families around the world.
“Snow White” starred Dame Marguerite Clark, an important film star in the teens, and she plays her pure and chaste role very well, and the rest of the cast is equally good, all perfect for an early film that doesn't suffer with the passage of time.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count has an appointment with the evil Queen.

“Snow White”, filme dirigido en el lejano año de 1916 por Herr Searle Dawley, es una hermosa adaptación del clásico cuento escrito por los hermanos Grimm.
Este filme estaba considerado como perdido hasta que afortunadamente una copia fue encontrada en el “Filmmuseum”, una especie de filmoteca holandesa en donde los nitratos silentes no están nada bien organizados, nada que ver con lo que acontece en la filmoteca de éste aristócrata germánico en donde los filmes están perfectamente clasificados para que así ninguno de ellos se pueda perder, incluyendo, por ejemplo, “Greed” de Herr Stroheim en su versión completa de más de 9 horas…
De todas formas y gracias al azar, todos los admiradores del cine silente podrán ahora apreciar el talento de Herr Searle.
“Snow White” ( este Conde germánico no considera necesario relatar ésta más que conocida historia sobre competiciones de belleza durante la Edad Media ), como éste aristócrata ha mencionado recientemente, es un filme visualmente bello, en donde la dirección artística y los decorados son realmente sorprendentes, sin olvidarse tampoco del maquillaje y algunos encantadores efectos especiales, incluyendo una pequeña secuencia animada.
Como sucede con algunas sobresalientes adaptaciones literarias de principios del cine mudo, hay en dichas producciones un especial cuidado a la hora de mostrar y recrear en detalle la mágica atmósfera de dichas narraciones en la pantalla y este filme es sin ningún lugar a dudas un perfecto ejemplo.
También es necesario comentar que en dichas producciones silente clásicas, no hay rastro de trasgresión o atrevimiento ( lo cual es también completamente innecesario pues la mayoría de las veces esas historias están repletas de crueldad ) y son por lo tanto, filmes conservadores, correctos, con la única intención de ser inofensivos y muy entretenidos para todas las familias del mundo entero.
“Snow White” fue protagonizada por Dame Marguerite Clark, una importante estrella cinematográfica allá por la década de los años diez, interpretando su papel de joven casta y pura, muy bien, conjuntamente con el resto del reparto, todos ellos perfectos para un filme primerizo que no ha sufrido ningún avatar con el paso del tiempo.
Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este Conde germánico tiene una cita con la malvada reina.
