"Die Freudlose Gasse" (1925) By G. W. Pabst

It is of course an excellent plan for a gloomy German count to begin a new and modern year watching again an appropriately gloomy film, an Expressionist classic that fits perfectly with any German aristocrat’s dour mood.

For that reason this German count decided to watch Herr G. W. Pabst’s “Die Freudlose Gasse” (1925). Of course it is always a pleasure to revisit this film, especially now that has been restored and those Expressionist old reels edited in a pristine modern way. However, it was a risky venture for this aristocrat to walk through Melchior Strasse because, natürlich!!... this Herr Von prefers to be a guest at the Carlton Hotel where the richest, most idle men and women without scruples or morals, enjoy their decadent lives in time to the sound of the stock market bell. This way of enjoying life has nothing in common with the neighbours at Melchior street where squalor and desperation are part of their daily and miserable lives.

“Die Freudlose Gasse” is a superb oeuvre and exemplifies German Expressionist silent film . It has the expected claustrophobic sets which have a dark and suffocating atmosphere. We experience the poverty ( emotional and tangible ), the misery and hopelessness that engulfed Central Europe ( Austria this time ) during the first part of the last century. It is a story without compassion for the main characters be they rich or poor. It doesn’t matter which social class they belong to or the particular sins of each ( mockery, sarcasm, debauchery, social climbing, prostitution ). Both classes suffered and adapted themselves to their surroundings in a complex social situation. It is a story of a corrupt society and Herr Pabst’s social portrait of its members results in a dark and disturbing film, one without even a glimmer of mercy for its characters or hope for the future.

In this vast darkness we see the shining lights of Dame Greta Garbo and Dame Asta Nielsen, two of the best actress of the silent world. It is a privilege to watch them together in the same film; such splendid actresses who capture completely decadence, desperation and the loss of innocence.

“Die Freudlose Gasse” is an essential German Expressionist film; one of those films that from time to time must be watched again for its shocking audacity and excellent artistic merits. It is a down to earth, raw version of human society during the mid 20’s of the last century, a desperate and unscrupulous society that will finally plummet into an even bigger disaster.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must go from Melchior Strasse to the Carlton Hotel.

"Geheimnisse Einer Seele" (1926) By G. W. Pabst

At the beginning of the last century, Herr Sigmund Freud was a notorious Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist who was famous for his innovative studies of mental diseases and the complicated unconscious mind. This led him to found psychoanalysis and write “Die Traumdeutung” ( The Interpretation Of Dreams ) a turning point in modern psychiatry that claimed the path to the unconscious could be found in dreams.
Since aristocrats usually have nothing in their minds, psychoanalysis could do little to fill such a void but was very useful for average people whose more accessible simple minds made them good subjects for these innovative psychiatric methods.

“Geheimnisse Einer Seele” ( Secrets Of A Soul ) (1926) , directed by Herr G. W. Pabst, an Austrian like Herr Freud, is about this new psychoanalysis, a subject in fashion in Germany due to the complex and confused Teutonic minds, that Herr Pabst efficiently and aseptically describes in this film.

The film is famous for its notorious dream sequence in which a chemistry professor’s unconscious fears come to the surface and threatens his marriage. It is all connected to an incident in the neighbourhood and the return of his wife’s cousin from India.

The first half of the film shows the tranquil and bourgeois life of the professor together with his wife and the (at first) unimportant events that little by little will affect the professor’s unconscious and will take shape in a traumatic dream.
This is the most unique and interesting part of the film, the late Expressionist dream sequence, a nightmare, a nonsense puzzle that during the second half of the film will be analyzed and described with the help of a psychoanalyst, natürlich!.

Herr Pabst, due to his Teutonic and organized human nature, describes and solves every little detail shown during the powerful dream sequence with the knowledgeable help of the psychiatrist of the film; a coherent, logical and aseptic analysis that lacks emotion and rhythm so there is no room for mystery. The story also has a conservative and too conventional happy ending that throws the film a bit off balance and is too predictable given the odd subject matter.

That’s what happens when you are an open-minded and common person, your innermost secrets are easily revealed, so unlike the wicked, empty and inscrutable aristocratic minds.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must wake up.

"Abwege" (1928) By G. W. Pabst

“Abwege”, a film directed by Herr G. W. Pabst, demonstrates the most representative and important artistic merits of the oeuvre of this great German director during his silent period. Expressionism and Psychology are both intertwined without distinction in this film so we could say that the film is an Expressionistic film as well as a profound study of the psychology of the main characters, or a film about a marriage in crisis in which the troubled relationship of the couple is worked out in an oppressive setting.

In its visual aspects, “Abwege” is an astounding film with important and decisive cinematography by Herr Theodor Sparkuhl. The different settings that are showed in the film superbly illustrate the different moods suffered by its main characters. This is demonstrated in an astonishing early scene when Herr Thomas Beck ( Herr Gustav Diessl, perfect as the boring and upset husband ) is depressed, sitting on the sofa the in their bedroom in front of an open window waiting in vain for his wife, Dame Irene ( Dame Brigitte Helm, more feline and cold than ever ) The different way of lighting the apartments of the various characters or those wonderful and thrilling shadows in the stairs, are a good examples of the virtuosity of Herr Theodor.

Complicated, controversial and at the same time, successful, is the psychological study of the different personalities of that marriage, a couple in crisis characterized by continuous ups and downs, incomprehension, monotony, and lack of understanding. They are two very different people with different ways of living and they must take on the hard task of finding common ground, an effort that seems to doomed to fail. Herr Pabst falters at the end of the film when he resorts to an unconvincing happy ending as well as doing some unnecessary moralizing.

There is a part of “Abwege” that this German count especially loves and it is the one that happens in the Klub… can you imagine, this film gives the chance to watch a genuine, decadent German night-Klub of the Weimar era!!!... It’s is a great present for decadent Teutonic aristocrats who in this way can remember the crazy nights of their youth, where many good times were spent in such gorgeous dens of iniquity. There the vicious and idle clients could find the vice of their choice: alcohol, drugs, tobacco and, the most terrible of all, Latin dancers!…

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must return urgently to the Klub.
