"The Unknown" (1927) By Tod Browning

Aristocrats are eccentric people, though not totally unlike other human beings, and as a result have a fondness for people who are different or bizarre. This is a good reason to spend again a summer night in the Schloss in the company of a whole bizarre gipsy circus, a very strange circus that has as one of its attractions, the harmless armless Alonzo ( Herr Lon Chaney ). Alonzo will gradually become more sinister during the film and finally will rise up in arms when he fails to succeed with his evil intentions.

In such a superb oeuvre, silent film fans can find or meet again a variety of freakish people with evil intentions ( the perfect equation ).

In this circus nothing is as it seems to be: a man who throws the knives at a beautiful and complicated girl who can’t’ stand men’s hands, a strongman and handsome guy with good intentions, a sarcastic midget, a mad doctor and even a tyrannical circus owner. They share unrequited loves, malicious intentions, strange and unique phobias, and suffer from amputations of body and soul.

Summing up, “The Unknown”, film directed by Herr Tod Browning during the silent year of 1927, is the quintessential circus silent film, a genre that this German count loves so much. It has a decadent atmosphere but it is the twisted second half of the oeuvre that gives to the film, if it is possible, more boldness, darkness and evil, not to mention that it is always a pleasure to check up again and again on this wonderful and terrible circus troupe, surely a collection of the most hideous, complicated and malicious people found in the whole silent world..

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must join such a strange and perverse circus troupe.

"Three Ages" (1923) By Buster Keaton & Eddie Cline

As is well-known among long haired youngsters who are incredibly interested in this Herr Graf's silent rants, during summertime aristocrats like to travel to exclusive and distinguished places in order to avoid the heat as well hordes of coarse people taking their ease. Such bizarre travels around the world also happen in “Three Ages”, a charming and elegant piece of silent work directed by old hands, namely Herr Buster Keaton and Herr Eddie Cline.

Obviously this German count liked most the first segment focused on the Stone Age due to the affinity that this aristocrat feels about that ancient time. preferring that to the second segment which takes place during the glory of Rome (It should have included the cause of the fall of the Roman empire, that is to say, Barbarians, or the same thing, Germans). Of course, the third segment takes place during modern times but this Teutonic aristocrat thinks that even 100 years ago should qualify as modern.

The leitmotiv that moves Herr Keaton and his companions to travel and endure the strange and hilarious happenings during three different ages, is the search for love, a very complicated subject to understand for aristocrats who prefer the search for money and self interest. Every time that “Three Ages” is shown in the Schloss theatre, it is always a pleasure to watch a funny, witty silent film (even for a serious German count), an oeuvre full of gags and gadgets, puns, pratfalls and acrobatics, visual and astounding technical tricks, an absolute silent delicatessen that is perfect to allow one to endure the various and coarse summertime severities.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must flirt with an old Teutonic heiress who doesn’t look her age.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

-/-

"Four Sons" (1928) By John Ford

In the typical German provincial town of Burgendorf lives a charming old woman, Dame Bernle, and her handsome and beloved four sons; they live a tranquil life among their classic Teutonic neighbours until one day war starts and Dame Bernle’s beloved sons must join the army.

This German count must confess that the films of Herr John Ford, the director of “Four Sons”, have never been much to the liking of this aristocrat. His characters are stereotypes and he repeats the same themes again and again throughout his career. For these reasons it is not strange that this German count is not usually in the mood for Ford.

This time “Four Sons” also includes stereotyped characters, Germans this time, not Irish… ( fortunately there is one true-life character in the whole film, a wicked, evil Maj. von Stomm with monocle included ) . People walk around in the bucolic provincial German town where everyone dresses like Germans, drink like Teutons and you have small girls with pigtails, martial geese splash in a pond nearby and everyone is happy. Absolute nonsense, natürlich! Germans are serious not merry people!.

Such German incongruities are at least visually perfect thanks to superb sets and great cinematography, all elegantly filmed by Herr Ford whose use of the camera is especially astonishing during the war trenches scene.

But the most interesting aspect, indeed the great revelation made while revisiting “Four Sons” for this German count was that this aristocrat noticed a strange and perverse undercurrent in the story. Each time that charming Mutterchen Bernle gives thanks to God, something terrible happens almost immediately afterwards. The first time that she does so, war starts; the second time she intones the mysterious incantation, three of her beloved sons die in the war. The third time that Mutterchen Bernle give thanks to God she is in New York, in order to be together with her only surviving son, and -remembering that “Four Sons” was produced during the silent year of 1928- well… logically Mutterchen Bernle was the cause of the Wall Street crash of 1929!!.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must avoid old German ladies who bring bad luck.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

-/-

"Asphalt" (1929) By Joe May

Summer has finally come to the Schloss forcing this German count to flee to colder climates before the dangerous rays of the sun spoil his pale skin . This being the case there's now time to view again and asses those silent German silent classics that this Herr Von watched and liked so much during the Weimar times; an excellent chance to check if these old films have passed the test of time. And of course one must consider the need for aristocratic hibernation as well as avoiding Teutonic extra review efforts.

The first time that this German count watched Herr Joe May’s “Asphalt” was during a mad Berliner soirée; the film was a wonderful and astonishing revelation, a great film due to its modernity and impeccable technical results. At the time the name of the director was written down in the decadent silent agenda as a director who would someday become famous and indeed Herr May has passed into the film history books with such superb films as “Das Indische Grabmal” (1921) and “Heimkehr” (1928).

From the very start of the film, even with the credits, Herr May's skill is established. He shows the fascinating big city and the main characters of the oeuvre ( a stylish crook, “desperate and in need”, and a dutiful constable ) and skilfully uses crane shots around the streets ( MEIN GOTT!!... what an incredible and evocative atmosphere) emphasizing from that time on, the dramatic, sensual aspects of the film at once without the need of additional explanations.

As happens in many Weimar silent films, social aspects ripple beneath the surface of the story ( which concerns an unscrupulous woman and her questionable life and her obscure pimp with international interests all of which escape the innocent policeman hero ). May notes the different social classes that separate Dame Elsa ( Betty Amann ) and Herr Albert Hols ( Herr Gustav Fröhlich ), elegant and decadent for Dame Else and proletarian and common for Herr Albert ( the contrast between Dame Elsa's decadent life and Herr Albert's proletarian family are carefully depicted.) These backgrounds obviously influence their conduct and “principles”, not to mention the way they both face life. Their different worlds t finally will collide hopelessly but beneath it all they are, in the end, just two lonely people ( and that’s one of the most important aspect of the story ), who want to connect with each other in spite of their social and even sexual inner conflicts. Duty and law will collide with human need but redemption is also part of the mix after a painful struggle.

“Asphalt” is outstanding for its superb direction and modernity, not to mention the gorgeous and stylish Dame Betty Amann, the unquestionable and sensual star of the film thanks to the superb and wonderful Herr Günther Rittau cinematography.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must order one of his Teutonic heiresses to asphalt the Schloss pavement but in one of her most gorgeous costumes.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Poil De Carotte" (1925) By Julien Duvivier

Herr Julien Duvivier was a great French film director well known for his talkie career, specially during the 30’s of the last century, a time when his films were very appreciated for their "poetic realism". However, it is unfair to neglect his remarkable silent career, a very interesting time during which Herr Julien established his style working as an assistant director to great French silent film directors like Herr André Antoine, Marcel L’Herbier and Herr Feuillade.

“Poil de Carotte” is a great film and a good example of Herr Duvivier's stylistic virtues. It is a beautiful and classical oeuvre that tells the story of the complicated relationships within a French family in a provincial town. It is a film adaptation of the French author Herr Jules Renard’s eponymous oeuvre, which Herr Duvivier would later remake as a talkie in 1932.

Many longhaired youngsters might think that with such a plot, this German aristocrat couldn’t appreciate or understand those peasant family French conflicts depicted in the film, but it isn’t so because family conflicts is also a customary habit in the aristocracy and certain particular attitudes of the local inhabitants of that provincial French town ( gossip, politics… ) are very usual too in aristocrat circles.

Everything is brilliant in “Poil de Carotte”, from technical and special effects that enrich superbly the film narrative of the oeuvre ( imaginative and varied camera tricks ) to splendid cinematography by Herr Ganzli Walter und André Dantan, that emphasizes masterfully the different surroundings of the film. There are moody shots that give a particular atmosphere to indoor scenes ( beautiful and dark and complicated to be filmed ) or outdoor scenes that are bright and reminiscent of Herr Renoir or Herr Van Gogh paintings.

The acting is perfect and the actors are inspired in their interpretations; Francois Lepic ( nicknamed by his family as “poil de carotte” - red-head ) is performed convincingly by André Heuzé, a child who is continuously maltreated by his own family, especially his wicked mother, Madame Lepic ( Charlotte Barbier-Krauss ) a “dominatrice” woman with a splendid moustache (not unlike the one sported by this German count ) and his brother and sister, Félix and Annette ( Fabien Haziza und Lydia Zorena, respectively ); his father-patient but distant- is Monsieur Lepic ( Henry Krauss ) who doesn’t know how to deal with such complex family relationships and conflicts. The supporting cast is also excellent, particularly a local singer who's also the provincial French vamp, Ernestine ( Renée Jean ) who this German count likes specially.

“Poil de Carotte” is a film with a strong regional French flavour but also with Dickensian overtones, a wonderful oeuvre of a director who has a splendid but unfortunately not well-known silent period that deserves rediscovery.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count has an appointment with a Teutonic redhead heiress with a big moustache.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Satana Likuyushchiy" (1917) By Yakov Protazanov

One of the outstanding characteristics of the film work of Herr Yakov Protazanov, a very important and prolific Russian film director, is the versatility and originality of his movies, which cover various film genres from hagiographic biographies, to sci-fi to costume films. All were very skilfully handed by Herr Protazanov.

“Satana Likuyushchiy” ( Satan Triumphant ) is a good example of what this German aristocrat is talking about although in this case its bizarre and strange atmosphere made this oeuvre especially interesting and original.

In a small town live two brothers, one a minister and the other one a hunchback painter of the chapel who lives with his wife. One dreadful and stormy night, a stranger knocks at the door asking for shelter. The stranger talks about all the good things of the earthly life the minister is missing because of his puritanical faith. The minister comes to accept the stranger's viewpoint but it is others who will pay the consequences because the minister will discover the human pleasures thanks to, ehem, his sister- in -law… The tormented minister and his cuckolded brother will die in a strange accident in the chapel and later an infant will be born from the minister's adulterous relationship.

The film is divided in two parts, the first one could be considered as the “Genesis” ( talking in church terms… ) ,the origins of all the miseries that will befall the principal characters of the film and the second part could be thought of as the “Revelation” or the chance for atonement for their sins because of the earlier history…

Especially remarkable for this German count is the tormented minister's struggle within his soul which makes for a real “tour de force” as he deals with Satan’s temptations. Earthly pleasures prove irresistible even to such a pious man. His broken faith and his particular fall to primal instincts makes for an original, bold and even irreverent aspect of the film, having in mind that previously the minister is shown as a righteous, strict and disciplined man. Nor can one forget the formerly faithful sister-in-law, who, as a German proverb says knows pretty well that good girls go to heaven, but the bad ones go everywhere…

During the first part of the film, there is implicit in the oeuvre a powerful sexual atmosphere, scenes full of desire which cannot be told, very remarkable considering that the film was made in 1917. If we have in mind that the cause of all the minister’s problems; that is to say, the strange person who arrives unexpectedly at his home one stormy night, is Satan himself… well, the fight between good and evil, heaven and hell, chastity and sexual activity, is inevitable, enriching the film with various meanings.

In the second part of the film are depicted the consequences of such mad love; the adulterous relationship gives birth to a bastard, a son devoted to his mother in spite of the circumstances of his birth; a good boy who will be tempted again for Herr Satan now lives in a bourgeois society, Again contradictory feelings will arise that will put at stake the minister’s son and his mother's remorse until the circle finally ends.

Herr Ivan Moskoujine ( who worked in many early Herr Protazanov silent films ), is splendid in his double role, as the minister and his son, showing the contradictions and strange conduct of both different characters, independent performances that confirm the superb qualities of such a great Russian actor.

Unfortunately in “Satana Likuyushchiy” both final endings are lost ( this is particularly unfortunate for the second part) not to mention that there are mutilated versions of the film circulating that include only one part of the oeuvre, If you want to enjoy Herr Protazanov’s film abilities, it will be necessary to get the almost complete version of the film in which are depicted superbly those strong human convictions intertwined with also human desires, the fascination with the sometimes blurred and thin line between good or evil.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count has some trifling satanic affairs to resolve.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

-/-

"The Wizard Of Oz" (1925) By Larry Semon

In the silent year of 1925, the popular Amerikan comedian Herr Larry Semon, adapted, produced and starred in Frank Baum's greatest children 's book “The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz”and this German count finds it is possible to say that it is a perfect film vehicle for Herr Semon but no one else in the story. Except for that popular silent comedian, there is no room or chance for the other characters; Dorothy ( Dame Dorothy Dwan ) is no more than a supporting character( no trace of Toto ) and the great wizard seems no mightier than a magician's apprentice.

The first half of the film might be described as “A Farmhand ( obviously Herr Larry Semon himself ) In The Pratfall Land Of Texas” where a lot of sight gags are displayed, especially the inventive use of many animations tricks (amazing to this German count) The second half of the film or “A Scarecrow ( Herr Larry Semon himself again ) In The Slapstick Land Of Oz”, includes funny and elaborate and very well assembled scenes with walker boxes and hungry lions.

Due to the omnipresent Herr Semon , the rest of the cast has little to do. Oliver Hardy (The Tin Woodsman) and Dorothy Dwan were regular supporting actors in many of Herr Semon comedy shorts. Dame Dwan is pretty old for her character so it is no great loss that her part is so minor but it's a pity in Herr Hardy's case, especially since he has a triple role.

“The Wizard Of Oz” is, in spite of it all, is an interesting oeuvre but Herr Larry Semon’s artistic selfishness and his presence in almost scene becomes a kind of artistic egocentrism; a great classic becomes no more than a vanity project.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must go to Berlin, the nearest place to Oz.

"A Cottage On Dartmoor" (1929) By Anthony Asquith

From time to time, it is very laudable for this German count to re-watch some of those silent films of his aristocratic youth. Overall, this in order to check if the passage of time has positively or negatively influenced his recollection of the remarkable aspects of such films. That’s not to mention that fortunately many of those films after such long time are now cleaned and restored -- nothing in common with those rotten and blurred nitrates that are stored at this Herr Graf’s gloomy cellar that necessarily need an extra pair of monocles each time that they are shown at the Schloss theatre.

This time such advisable aristocratic and nostalgic film habits had excellent artistic results. That’s because after 70 years from its official release, “A Cottage On Dartmoor”, a film directed by Herr Anthony Asquith, preserves intact its many and excellent virtues. The perfect word that summarizes the merits of that British film: virtuosity.

Herr Anthony Asquith skilful film direction begins as the films starts. It introduces a convict that escaped from prison running away along Dartmoor meadows. With the sole purpose of revenge, he tries to find the girl that causes him imprisonment; when finally he finds her, a fascinating flashback starts.

A superb display of film technique can be seen in the film. There are such as perfect images ( Expressionism influences are obvious in the film, in its obscure and visual conception ) concatenations or fascinating visual metaphors ( the use of the camera is astounding: remarkable and imaginative camera angles that scrutinizes the tormented soul and evil intentions of the main character of the film ). It depicts an intriguing, thrilling and original story. A barber, Joe ( Herr Uno Henning ) falls in love with a manicurist, Sally ( Dame Norah Baring ) in the same place where both work. Joe is rejected by her and doesn’t accept that ultimately Sally loves a client, Harry ( Herr Hans Adalbert Schlettow ). Consumed by jealousy, tries to murder Harry.

It has a perfect “tempo” in order to explain and show such a tormented love story that will finish with a poetic, sorrowful ending.
Only one thing is lacking in seeing the film and is Dame Norah Baring’s performance. Probably she is so stiff, inexpressive and frigid due to the abuse of the use of tea -- that awful beverage that usually is drunk by commoners and even eccentric aristocrats in the perfidious Albion. But that’s a minor flaw that doesn’t damage excessively the excellent artistic merits of such remarkable film.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must go to a decadent soirée pretty well-combed.

"Der Junge Medardus" (1923) By Michael Kertész

In 1809, while Napoleon is near Vienna, the duke of Valois ( Herr Ludwig Rethey ), aspiring to the throne of France and exiled in Austria, plots against the usurping Emperor. The son of the duke, Franz ( Herr Karl Lamac ), is in love with Dame Agathe Klähr ( Dame Anny Hornik ) and asks his father for his consent to the marriage, but he refuses it. Desperate, both youngsters commit suicide. The brother of Dame Agathe, Herr Medardus ( Herr Victor Varconi ), is seduced by the duke's mistress, Helene ( Dame Agnes Esterhazy ), who wants to use him as the instrument of her vengeance against the Valois family.

By then the Napoleonic troops enter in Vienna, soon in flames, and Helene incites Medardus to kill Napoleon...

That’s the plot of “Der Junge Medardus”, a film directed by the Hungarian Herr Michael Kertész ( afterwards Curtiz in Amerika ) in the silent year of 1923. Of course it includes aristocratic family conflicts ( the usual ones, that is to say, murders, vengeance; the kinds of things that aristocrats like so much ), based on Herr Arthur Schnitzler's oeuvre.

The film is a historical film production which means historical events are seen as important as aristocratic favourite subjects with their complicated feelings about primal sentiments. It was an important Austrian big budget film production as can be seen in many carefully recreated battle scenes and elaborate sets but except for aristocrats, money doesn’t mean success…

The film lacks emotion; it seems that Herr Kertész is more interested in illustrating historical events in a documentary fashion, using a static camera that films almost everything in long and medium shots; thus the action scenes are out of the action ( a terrible film incongruity ). Besides that, one has the feeling, especially during the first half of the film, that Herr Kertész is hurrying events. Such poor direction just does not involve the audience in the battle scenes or the court conspiracies. The film includes also just adequate performances, including Napoleon himself ( even though that French emperor has a tendency for grandiloquence… ) leaving to be admired only Herr Eduard von Borsody und Herr Gustav Ucicky cinematography. Due to the many important persons involved in the oeuvre and its big budget,, it should have been an artistic success but instead it's just an interesting failure.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count has Napoleonic affairs to do.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Chiny I Lyudi" (1929) By Yakov Protazanov

From his early silent works, the great Russian film director, Herr Yakov Protazanov, made literary adaptations from equally great Russian writers, as is the case with “Chiny I Lyudi” ( Ranks And People ) (1929) in which three short stories by Chekhov, “Anna On The Neck”, “Death Of A Petty Official” and “Chameleon” were assembled for the silent screen.

“Anna On The Neck” tells the story the young and beautiful Anna ( Dame Mariya Strelkova ) who has just married an old but rich civil servant. Anna thinks her marriage will rescue her father and her two brothers from a miserable life of poverty. Anna becomes disenchanted fast when her rich husband turns out to be an avaricious and severe man. Anna’s sad life changes when she attends a posh ball and every man there, including the mayor, is charmed by her. Anna’s husband hopes to get business advantages through this but Anna is thinking of revenge.

The second episode, “Death Of A Petty Official” depicts the story of Herr Cherviakov ( Herr Ivan Moskvin ) who together with his wife attends a ballet; during the performance, the civil servant sneezes on a functionary of high rank and offers apology after apology all during and at the end of the spectacle. The general pays no mind to the incident but is harassed by this minor official who won't let the matter drop and, time after time, keeps on apologizing, writing letters asking for forgiveness or visiting the functionary at home.

In the third film episode,” Chameleon”, a small dog bites the finger of a passer-by. The furious man seizes it and asks two policemen to charge the owner of the dog. Both agents begin to draft the report but a change of attitude occurs at once when a man comes to tell them that this dog belongs to the mayor.

In the year 1929, to construct a film made of different episodes was an exciting idea and the successful final result ( very fanciful in this kind of film ) depends basically on the film structure. Although it's not really necessary for the different stories to be interconnected, this German count feels it's very advisable artistically to have a theme-even a minor one- linking the episodes within the film.

Like a “matryoshka” doll ( those Russian set of dolls of decreasing sizes placed one inside another ), in “Chiny I Lyudi”, little by little Herr Protazanov goes deeply into the complicated relationships between high or low ranks, or the everlasting and subtle fighting among different social classes. He studies in depth and with sobriety and skill, troublesome and basic human instincts and behaviours such as hypocrisy, fearfulness or forgiveness, (no need this time to be strictly and obviously incisive in such criticism). This is a solid oeuvre with complementary and enlightened meanings that will linger in the minds of the viewers long after the silent show has ended.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must close ranks with his fellow aristocrats.

"Ménilmontant" (1926) By Dimitri Kirsanoff

There is an old German proverb that says that size doesn’t matter ( well, size does count for this count having in mind the perimeter of his Teutonic heiresses… ) and the saying rings true with “Ménilmontant” a medium-length silent film directed by Herr Dimitri Kirsanoff, and a striking, disturbing masterpiece.

Herr Kirsanoff's direction is astonishing in every aspect of the film, particularly in its technique. It's a mixture of drama, avant-garde, experimental film and hyper realism. The story depicted in the film ( the terrible life of two orphan sisters ) doesn’t allow any concession to the audience; to watch “Ménilmontant” today still invokes amazement, distress and an infinite sadness.

From the very start of the film ( superb, striking and masterful editing by Herr Kirsanoff himself ) the director shows power and imagination and a strong control of film narrative ( there is no need of intertitles ). Kiransoff's use of imagery is thrilling and brilliant. Images emphasize a ruined happy childhood and the duality and dangers of a big city ( flashbacks, imaginative camera angles, dreamy and poetic shots ) not to mention the sorrowful life of the two orphans, an existence of loneliness, abandonment and despair that broke the heart of a heartless German aristocrat, especially the superb scene in which the younger sister ( touching Dame Nadia Sibirskaia ) ,alone and hungry on a bench park with her baby, accepts some bread from an old man, a moving and lyrical scene, that summarizes the spirit and achievement of this oeuvre.

“Ménilmontant” is a work of art, a striking experimental style in the service of a tragic and sad story, brilliantly and disturbingly balanced.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must become a little livelier.

Early Herr Maurice Tourneur Silent Films

Due to chaotic but Germanic condition in the Schloss silent archives within that gloomy cellar, when the servants cleaned up and put it in order that place, some silent treasures appeared. From such a sinister and humid source recently comes two early silent films directed by the French (but great) director Herr Maurice Tourneur: “La Bergère d’Ivry” (1913) and especially “Figures De Cire” (1914) a film that it was considered lost until Herr Graf’s servants did their duties.

“La Bergère d’Ivry” was a silent work for “Éclair” films produced in 1913 and an excellent early oeuvre ( it is considered the earliest film that has survived of Tourneur career ).
The film tells the story of Dame Aimée ( Dame Renée Sylvaire ), a young shepherdess who is taken under the of Dame Hortense ( Dame Paulette Noizeux ), the wife of a village postmaster who accepts the love propositions of the Comte de Granval ( Henry Roussel). This is a very complicated subject because Aimée knows very well that Dame Hortense’s husband is a very jealous man. If he finds out he will not like such flirting, so in order to prevent a catastrophe, Dame Aimée will try to avoid such situation.

This short film is an early example of Herr Tourneur’s carefully artistic expertness and merits. The film has an excellent set design with bucolic and realistic outdoor sceneries in what it might be considered a mixture of film d’Art and naturalism film with the right doses of drama.

The film narrative of “La Bergère d’Ivry” is concise but direct and in spite of that the film is basically filmed with a static camera. Herr Tourneur knows very well how to profit from such a limited technical aspect ( on the other hand, a common practice in such early silent film productions ). This happens with a decisive shot in where the love misunderstandings and a threatening drama are solved by the gathering of the main characters in the same scene and a slightly enlarged shot to develop the crucial situations of the different characters as performed those by restrained actors (while showing emotions in a very conceivable way).

“Figures De Cire” (1914) was another work for “Éclair” films. If this German count remembers well it was Herr Tourneur second collaboration with Herr André de Lorde. Herr de Lorde was the master of the “Grand Guignol” genre, those theatrical works full of terrifying realistic elements such as murders, mutilations and other bloodcurdling situations that the Parisians liked so much at the beginning of the last century.

Due to those artistic references, not to mention that “Figures De Cire” was considered lost until 2007, the film is very estimable. This short film ( 11 minutes ) summarizes its theatrical references with the virtues of the “Grand Guignol” genre but transferred to the silent screen. Herr Tourneur was more interested in the psychological aspect of the story than to show effective special effects. For that reason, it is especially remarkable because of its ill, decadent and threatening atmosphere.

It is obvious that “Figures De Cire” was an illustrious reference for Herr Gance’s “Au Secours” (1924) ( Herr Gance made a comedy with basically the same plot that has “Figures De Cire”. That is to say, a man must spend a night in a sinister place in order to gain an important sum of money… by the way, in those silent times, bourgeois men were very stylish and spent those dreadful nights with top hat and tuxedos… ). More doubtful for this German count are some comments that said that Herr Tourneur film influenced Herr Leni’s notorious “Das Wachsfigurenkabinett” (1924) because, although many elements coincide in both films, the development of the story and the artistic intentions are completely different.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must find some more lost films in the Schloss cellar.

"Der Rosenkavalier" (1925) By Robert Wiene

From the beginning, silent film showings were not silent; depending on the status of the theatre, different melodies accompanied always those film showings. Coughing or marital discussions together with children howling were the music accompaniment in small theatres of towns without resources; improvised or popular songs were played at the piano in medium theatres in provincial towns; orchestras provided the music in elegant theatres in reputable and important capital cities.

Some important European composers were seduced by the possibilities and importance of the cinema and composed or adapted their own compositions to be played live in those important theatres. This happened with the German composer Herr Richard Strauss who recomposed and adapted his famous and successful opera “Der Rosenkavalier” ( The Knight Of The Rose ) for the screen, capturing the spirit of that musical comedy of three acts, not to mention that the screenplay was written by Herr Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the opera’s librettist, and last but not least, the great German director Herr Robert Wiene, directed the film version for the silent screen, three German aces in the same silent project, certainly.

Obviously the German aristocrats prefer to watch ( while catching up on their sleep ) opera at the Opera House and not in a coarse theatre but it must be admitted that this silent film adaptation provides a good vehicle for lazy and modern youngsters to acquaint themselves with such an elegant musical spectacle.

The story: While her husband is becoming famous in the war, the marshal of Werdenberg's wife consoles herself in the arms of the youngster Octavian and tries to arrange the love affairs of her cousin, the baron Ochs, by presenting him to young Sophie. This baron is taken with her and the Marschallin proposes Octavian to be his “Rosenkavalier” in order to present the traditional silver rose to his fiancée. But youngsters are youngsters and sex hormones hold sway over the whole world so for that reason immediately Octavian and Sophie fall in love with each other…

This film adaptation of “Der Rosenkavalier” is one of the better of “grandiose” German costume films and Teutonic film operetta. It's an elegant and romantic film beautifully made in artistic terms ( excellent and varied set design, not to mention, obvious soigné costumes ) , technically excellent and wittily made ( flashbacks and a Sibylline use of the ellipsis ) in order to condense and adapt Herr Strauss’ opera original story for the screen. This hard task is very well accomplished, summarizing successfully three aristocratic love stories full of love conspiracies and maintaining intact the spirit of the opera on which it was based ( it combines the theatrical and cinema virtues very well ). It does not depend exclusively on its musical spectacle merits but works as an independent and original film production. The many classic court ceremonies and the elegant atmosphere makes for one of those delicious and decadent German exaggerated operettas that the aristocracy likes so much.

“Der Rosenkavalier” was excellently and recently restored by the German-French TV. Channel “ARTE” which reconstructed the missing end of the film with some stills and obviously includes the original Herr Strauss film score. The restored silent film was premiered at Dresden ( that German city that some bad-mannered youngsters blew into pieces sometime ago ) in the “Semperoper”, that magnificent Semper Opera House in which in the year 1925 Herr Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier” made its first stage appearance.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must dance a waltz and sing an aria at the same time.

"The White Sister" (1923) By Henry King

“The White Sister”, a film directed by Herr Henry King in the silent year of 1923, depicts the unfortunate fate of its heroine, an aristocrat and rich Italian girl ( a strange fact this because to be rich and an aristocrat are not synonymous in Germany… ).
Because the main character of the film, Dame Angela Chiaromonte ( Dame Lillian Gish ) suffers what fate has in store for her (and believe it or not, it is not to attend decadent soirées) this German count will relate the sad tale right now…

Dame Angela is in love with the young, handsome captain Herr Giovanni Severini ( Herr Ronald Colman ). They are engaged and want to seal their love pretty soon but Dame Chiaromonte’s ill fate doesn’t permit such happiness and delivers the first blow when Dame Chiaromonte’s father dies while riding with his hounds. This is not a serious problem in itself, you know: your rich father dies unexpectedly and in that same moment you inherit an enormous fortune. That’s the usual proceedings in Deutschland… but the problem is that Dame Chiaromonte has an elder and evil stepsister ( natürlich! ), Marchesa de Mola ( Dame Gail Kane ). She has plenty of malicious intentions and drives our heroine from her estate and takes away her inheritance, having secretly burned her father’s will.

Penniless, Dame Chiaromonte has to bear the further indignity of having her fiancée’s father decide to cancel the marriage and to make things worse her fiancée is assigned to a distant land in where he will be attacked by natives and declared officially dead..... So, besides penniless, Dame Chiaromonte is also loveless!. Desperate, she decides to become a nun ( a desperate decision, certainly ), devoting herself to people even worse off than herself( selfish solace ). Then, many years later, Herr Giovanni appears; he find out that his fiancée has become a pious nun so he abandons any lascivious feelings for her.

Ah!... you can’t find any comfort, any hope in such miserable love story and even Dame Chiaromonte devoted and pious life doesn’t have any reward from her master as the German saying “to drown one’s sorrows” doesn’t work here because Gott’s wrath, in the form of a volcanic eruption ( Vesuvius namely ) causes a flood, drowning Herr Giovanni while he was helping to save the lives of the poor people who lived under Vesuvius.

“The White Sister” it is one of those classic “larger than life” film stories successfully directed by Herr King ( excellent pacing and film narration makes its 140 minutes seem shorter ). It's a good example of those powerful oeuvres full of conservative and high values and principles of the old epochs ( self-sacrifice, strong convictions, religious devotion, chastity ) that includes beautiful scenery, art direction and devoted, solid and convincing performances by Dame Lillian Gish ( a candid heroine ) and Herr Ronald Colman ( a long-suffering man in love ), it makes for a great film although one dated in these modern times in which such strong convictions and decisions, aren't acceptable motivations in pseudo-realistic terms but seem more like sci-fi to contemporary audiences.

And now if you’ll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German count must sacrifice himself by going to another decadent soirée.
