"Korkein Voitto" (1929) By Carl von Haartman

The Baron Henrik von Hagen is an idle Finn bourgeois ( as you can see, decadent people are all over the world… ); after eleven years, he meets again an old acquaintance ,Madame Vasilevna, a foreigner who during her youthful days was a ballet dancer while Herr Baron was her faithful cavalier. Once they are reunited again in Helsinki, Herr Baron discovers that Madame Vasilevna earns her living with a new hobby: she likes very much painting frozen Finn landscapes but especially the ones around military bases.

“Korkein Voitto” ( The Highest Triumph ) was directed by Herr Carl von Haartman in the silent year of 1929 and it was the first film directed by this peculiar Finnish director, although previously Herr Haartman had a very interesting life and career.

During his youthful days, Herr Haartman had a military career and he participated in the Finnish civil war of 1918. During the mid 20’s he went to Hollywood where he collaborated or played with very important directors of the time, namely Herr William Wellman with whom Herr Haartman, a military expert, supervised every flying sequence of “Wings” (1927) and Herr Erich von Stroheim’s “The Wedding March” (1928) wherein Haartman played what is supposed to be a German officer, a role that was his speciality during his acting days in Hollywood (though he was often un-credited).

With such important film background experience, Herr Haartman was selected by the most important Finland film studio, “Suomi-Filmi” to direct “Korkein Voitto” and certainly the Hollywood experience can be appreciated in the impeccable and excellent film direction. The art direction and cinematography demonstrate an appreciation for film classicism, a high finish film made by a Finnish director, ja wohl!.

Herr Haartman has a fluid film narrative ( travelling, air scenes ) constructing a story of romance and political schemes in which stereotypes are used proportionally and in a light way ( an idle Baron, a mysterious woman, a suspicious Jew, an expensive taxi driver… ) adding action and a slight sense of humour, achieving finally a very interesting although uneven film.

The main characters of the picture, Herr Baron und Madame Vasilevna, played by Herr Haartman himself und Frau Kerstin Nylander, go all over Finland, combining in this way urban scenes together with others of the wild and frozen Finnish landscapes (there’s even some seal hunting, a peculiar pastime for Finns). The dramatic intensity of this story of hidden intrigues works well, even though the characters are rather clichéd. Everything is done “Hollywood style” but well adapted to the Finnish setting and circumstances.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must go Teutonic seal hunting.

"Fänrig Ståls Sägner” (1926) By John W. Brunius

The history of Finland, that European land of a thousand lakes, was always related to Sweden for of which it was part until 1809, and the Russian Empire of which Finland was made an autonomous state, the Grand Duchy of Finland, since that year.

“Fänrig Ståls sägner”, directed by Herr John W. Brunius in the silent year of 1926, depicts precisely the transitional period of uncertainty that happened in the history of that European country during the Finnish war of 1808-1809. Events according to Herr Johan Ludwig Runeberg (who was a very important Finnish poet) are precisely used as the film describes in a romantic way Herr Runeberg’s poem; many inter-titles in the film are quotes.

In spite of being an important Swedish film budget production, the film’s many actors were Finnish and much of the film was filmed in Finland. This created an excellent paradigm of the duality that Finland suffered in those times trying to maintain its independence and culture from the Swedish (and Russians) with a stubborn Finnish determination to defend their genuine idiosyncrasy. Depicted in the film are many scenes in the form of a romantic and nationalist exaltation of the land as well as scenes of many heroic deeds.

The Swedish policy of war and its internal contradictions together with the Russian strong determination to annex Finland is depicted in the film sometimes in a confusing way. That’s due to the many characters involved in the film and the many historical facts that Herr Runeberg is trying to depict in two long hours.

The film story is remembered in flashback by an old lieutenant who participated in the war as recounted to a young teacher. Besides the war epic, the film also includes a love story among two youngsters who are involved in the turmoil of the war incidents. This makes the film kind of “collage” that many times lacks rhythm and film continuity; as the Teutonic saying goes, it’s a situation of “Jack of all trades and master of none”…

In spite of the lack of intensity in developing the historical events depicted in the film, the picture has vigorous battle scenes where a lot of extras were needed. They’re not elaborated or complicated ones, certainly ( more camera movements would have improved the action needed in order to transmit the clamour of war ). However, there are moments in which the war epic achieves moments of tragic lyricism and beauty.

“Fänrig Ståls sägner” is probably too ambitious film in its various and erratic artistic film purposes and failed especially in telling the historical process of the events that the picture tries to describe. However, at the same time it is successful in the film’s aesthetic and patriotic artistic purposes by depicting an important transitional period in the Finland history.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must continue to rule implacably his independent Germanic Duchess.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

-/-

"Brudeferden I Hardanger" (1926) By Rasmus Breistein

After the impasse of the Viennese intermission, this Herr Graf resumes his aristocratic activities in regards to the silent screenings at the Schloss theatre. ( Other and more decadent ones were continued merrily during the staying of this Herr Von in the Austrian capital city.)

And what better way to start another silent year than discovering unknown Nordic silent films? With some exceptions, many film productions of those cold European countries are not well known to silent connoisseurs. That’s generally due to whimsy film distribution policies or few public exhibitions of these films in theatres. This is a great error that thanks to modernen times, new formats, new distribution and broadcasting channels is being corrected thus finally making available for silent film fans these excellent oeuvres.

The first picture of this exclusive aristocratic film programme was “Brudeferden I Hardanger” ( The Bridal Party In Hardanger ) directed by Herr Rasmus Breistein in the silent year of 1926. It’s a wonderful silent film that must be discovered and enjoyed by any silent film fan around the world.

The film depicts a truncated love story through the whole life of the youngster fraulein Marit Skjolte ( Frau Aase Bye ) who is in love with Anders ( Herr Henry Gleditsch ). The latter promised Marit to marry her when he was returning from a two year absence from their little town. But the fact is that never will happen because after four years of Marit having no news or letter from Anders, finally she discovered that he’s to marry a wealthy fraulein in the church of their little town.

“Brudeferden I Hardanger” has remarkable aspects that made this film a very special one with peculiarities connected with the surroundings that decisively influence the lives of the main characters of the film.

As in many Nordic films, nature is always a very powerful and important film character in the story and plays a prominent role in accordingly developing the film narrative that the director needed or wanted depending on his own personal artistic interests.

In “Brudeferden I Hardanger”, nature is in the background but, at the same time, is a fundamental character that is used by Herr Breistein very wisely. From the very start of the film, we view the beautiful landscapes of the Hardanger fjord which witnessed a social tragedy, the massive emigration of the inhabitants of the little town to America who flee from a beautiful but impoverished land. It’s a land, however, that is incapable of giving enough resources to the population and they begin searching for a better life out of the country. Nature becomes a relevant and even cruel master that has no mercy with the people who live in the surrounding areas.

The hard conditions in the fjord are suffered by our heroine when she applies for a post with the county judge for a job in where she is treated harshly by the judge’s wife. After the shock of her fiancée’s marriage she is forced to take a post with an old cotter up in the mountains. These situations together with her sad feelings, don’t change until she finally decides to marry Tore ( Herr Vilhelm Lund ) a rich farmer who always loved her in (spite her indifference) and it’s a last chance for Marit, certainly. In this part of the movie, nature is especially used as a decisive character that emphasizes the difficult social conditions and the social class differences in the fjord.

But nature has its more aesthetic part in the film as can be seen especially during the bridal voyage down the Hardanger fjord and its beautiful and evocative scene inspired by one of the most well-known paintings in Norwegian art history. Certainly Herr Breistein captures its beauty and romantic scent with an inflexion point in the film that accelerates the pace in a dramatic way.

Because Marit waited for years for the return of her fiancée and then realized that her waiting was in vain, the previous timid, innocent and young fraulein grows into an embittered, resented old woman ( Frau Gunhild Schytte Jacobsen ) who never will forget the betrayal Anders did to her. It’s a terrible deception and that hate that even will transmit to her own sons.

The human portrait of Marit is certainly outstanding and, is well transmitted by the two actresses that perform the character within the different times of main character’s life. Depicted are events that transform a good and hopeful young woman in a selfish and vindictive old woman. In the end Marit realizes this and accepts that in a way she has lost her whole life, living one that she didn’t want to,

The transition between youth and old age is a small lapse of time within the film culminated and reflected upon in the last scene of the film. It’s a beautiful but terribly sad scene in where two old people are finally reunited at the end of their lives, aware of their lost time that will never be recovered and keeping only memories of better but old times.

The film was recently restored by the Norwegian Film Institute in what it was an enormous and complicated task that, thank Gott, was a successful one. This can be appreciated in the available pristine copy of the film with superb music arranged, composed and adapted by Herr Halldor Krogh which enhances the beauty and sorrow that involved in this excellent silent film.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must take a boat voyage down any Teutonic estuary, the Galitzien version of the Norwegian fjords.

From Vienna: The Aristocratic New Year's Celebration 2011

During the next fortnight this modernen diary will be closed due to some wild, decadent and obviously aristocratic mad evenings. This German count will celebrate at an exclusive and special European aristocratic ball room in order to bring in the new longhaired year of 2011.

Accordingly and properly within aristocratic parameters, just what will be the special place in order to celebrate the new and aristocratic silent year?? ... There is only one place on Earth where a German count easily can be at home in these special days. It’s a place that conjures up the quintessential aristocratic and decadent way of life that, after many centuries, maintains intact its exclusivity and old ancient atmosphere. Thanks Gott that place it is not very far from Germany; it’s Wien ( Vienna for those who doesn’t speak elegant European languages ).

So during the next days, this Herr Graf will enjoy the snowy Austrian capital city and its peculiar and cold atmosphere ( with the permission of the weather and especially the whimsy of Spanish air traffic controllers… ). What better way to properly celebrate than strolling the New Year’s path inside an elegant aristocratic “fiaker”, a classical Viennese two-horse carriage? Such transport is especially useful for going to Imperial Balls or celebrating the New Year in luxurious style by attending the performance of Herr Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” at the Wiener Staatsoper (or the “Vienna State Opera” for those illiterate longhaired youngsters who doesn’t speak European languages mentioned above).

So, Mein Liebers… for this reason and because of his aristocratic absence, this Herr Graf wants to now wish you all a happy New Year hoping that 2011 will bring us more of these wonderful silent films that make life, even aristocratic ones, more bearable. Silent pictures that this Herr Von would like very much to review for you during the next year are with, natürlich!!, the permission of Frau Sissi, Duchess of Bavaria , Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Die Frau, Nach Der Man Sich Sehnt" (1929) By Curtis Bernhardt

Henri Leblanc ( Herr Uno Henning ), descendant of a bankrupted Industrialist family, marries a rich heiress in order to save the family firm. On the honeymoon, Herr Leblanc meets a mysterious woman on the train, Frau Stascha ( Frau Marlene Dietrich ) with whom he will fall desperately in love. He goes to ruin with her, leaving his wife on the train and fleeing with Frau Stascha to Cannes.

But Stascha, bound to Dr. Karoff ( Herr Fritz Korner ), especially needs the protection of Herr Leblanc due that fact that her relation with the Dr. is connected with the knowledge of a crime.

“Die Frau, Nach Der Man Sich Sehnt” (1929) ( “Three Loves” ), a film directed by Herr Curtis Bernhardt, it is a very remarkable oeuvre and certainly the best silent film made by Frau Marlene Dietrich.

Before this excellent film, Frau Dietrich was a cute and plump fraulein that had a not very impressive career in roles directed by different and sometimes important German directors. That’s until Herr Bernhardt takes advantage of all of her true possibilities for the silent screen emphasizing those same traits that later Herr von Sternberg uses in a similar way for the sake and glory of Frau Dietrich.

At this point it is necessary for this German count to say that the work that Herr von Sternberg did with his most outstanding pupil wasn’t at all entirely original and exclusive as evidenced in “Die Frau, Nach…”, Herr Bernhardt did splendid work in the same artistic and dramatic parameters which, in turn, Herr Dietrich enhanced in the special atmosphere of the silent screen. In years later, it was for Herr von Sternberg to enlarge the talkie career of the Teutonic actress.

The great cinematography by the reputable Herr Curt Courant und Herr Hans Scheib, created those classic sculptured face shots of the actress amid shadows and enigmatic angles creating the paradigm of a “femme fatale”. This shines especially in this mysterious love triangle drama. Thus results an “amour fou”, perfectly developed in different sceneries with everything for the sake of Frau Dietrich. The film is an unconditional gift and a perfect vehicle for the Teutonic actress that certainly owes a lot to this film’s construction in a manner that later became her personal and well-known iconic image.

But not only Frau Dietrich deserves attention in this film; the male main characters of the picture ( Herr Fritz Korner und Herr Uno Henning ) did excellent work too as two tormented lovers whose fascination and infatuation for Frau Stascha will bring them only misery and a doomed life.

The film transits between different sceneries. There are segments of the film that are very well defined and in continuity, developing the increasing passion and dramatism that brings the main characters of the film to life. These start with the industrialist images of the first part of the picture ( in those days, Germans liked a lot scenes of engines, pistons and steam… ) which are mechanical, emotionless and symbolic of Herr Leblanc’s marriage of convenience. They continue to the uncontrolled passion that Herr Leblanc will experience in the train when he meets Frau Stascha via visualizing an era when the train was a romantic and unpredictable mean of transport... and had nothing in common with the aseptic and fast high-speed trains of nowadays. And at the party at the hotel during the night of the Holy Sylvester, the facts accelerate to the end of this peculiar tragic love triangle via a “in crescendo” film story in which the eroticism, drama and wild passion are depicted in a very remarkable and fascinating way.

“Die Frau, Nach Der Man Sich Sehnt” is an outstanding silent film that depicts one of those mad love stories than only can happen in silent films and confirms that Frau Dietrich already existed and was “invented” by Herr Bernhardt years before Herr von Sternberg.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must talk with Frau Dietrich about old German times.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

-/-

"Als Ich Tot War" (1916) By Ernst Lubitsch

The most dangerous threat to the happiness of any young married couple, besides matrimony itself, are the mothers-in-law; this terrible feminine lobby, since the dawn of time , has always meddled and tried to disturb the tranquillity of newlyweds and sometimes their evil schemes succeeded in making a contented life impossible for the youngsters.

The great German director, Herr Ernst Lubitsch, captured pretty well these universal mother-in-law treacherous manoeuvres in “Als Ich Tot War” ( When I Was Dead ) (1916) a two-reel silent comedy shown recently at the Schloss theatre.

The film depicts the story of a young married couple ( Herr Ernst Lubitsch himself and Frau Louise Schenrich ) who live in the same apartment with their mother-in-law ( Frau Lanchen Voss ), a terrible mistake. At least if the mother-in-law lives far away, her dangerous intentions require more exertion to work. Herr Ernst likes very much to play chess with his pals at the club, a thrilling sport that will bring him a lot of problems ( that’s what happens when you play such weird games ). One night Herr Ernst arrives home late due to one of those exciting and lengthy chess matches and finds the door to his home locked, forcing him to sleep on the stairs. It is not necessary to say that the party responsible for such an evil act is his mother-in-law who continually uses the long chess matches to poison her daughter’s mind against her husband. She finally succeeds and Frau Luise divorces her mate.

But Herr Ernst’s revenge will be terrible: His mother-in-law puts an ad in the newspaper for a butler so, anticipating many modernen superheroes, he dons a disguise and answers the ad (Herr Ernst s disguise consists only of a wig but nobody seems to recognize him). Now, inside his old home and thanks to his wig, his sex appeal will attract the maid and even his mother-in-law!, In what it is one of the most insidious plans of vengeance ever contemplated. Herr Ernst will try to seduce his mother-in-law in order to shame her and finally banish her from his home.

“Als Ich Tot War” is a funny silent comedy, typical of Herr Lubitsch’s youngster days. It’s rough but therein lays its charm. The funny and simple situations depicted in the film and its light, easy and inoffensive humour is of the sort that have pleased audiences for centuries before the silent screen. Herr Lubitsch of course will later become one of the most important film directors in cinema history but he’s a long way from that here.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must play chess with one of his mothers-in-law.

"Erreur Tragique" (1912) By Louis Feuillade

Frau Suzanne und René de Romiguières are a young and happy French bourgeoisie couple who live in a “château” at the foothills of Cévennes. Herr René must go to Paris in order to properly attend to business.

Staying two days alone in a big city like Paris without your wife is certainly an excellent opportunity to enjoy the pleasures of France’s capital city,... so the young marquis decide to enjoy himself by going to... ehem… a cinématographe!.

During the show of “Onésime Vagabond”, Herr René was deeply astonished by this “Gaumont” film production but not for its artistic merits; rather because during a scene his wife appears walking arm in arm with an unknown man! From this time forward, the monsieur le marquis will be consumed by jealousy. His state of mind worsens when his wife receives a mysterious letter in which a rendezvous with a man is arranged. Absolutely deranged by this, le marquis decide to make an attempt on his wife’s life.

“Erreur Tragique” is a notorious short film directed by Herr Louis Feuillade in the silent year of 1912, in which the mastery the French director is evident regardless of the genre. The film’s dramatic intensity goes “in crescendo” until a thrilling and, fortunately, happy ending that puts relief into what it is an early and desperate portrait of human and masculine nature.

The film is absolutely valid and modern today because unfortunately some things have not changed a lot since the film was made a century ago ( actually, that people are continuing marrying among themselves! ). These most primitive human impulses are still suffered today by jealous and obsessed husbands (e.g. deception, jealousy, mistrust ). Terrible consequences are seen in the film such as morbid feelings and conduct that affects and drives crazy even the most reasonable and distinguished persons. On the other hand the film is modern nowadays too in its technical aspects, film narrative and direction. Just change the elegant horse-drawn carriages for noisy automobiles, handwritten letters for modernen e-mails or viewing “Onésime Vagabond” as le monsieur le marquis does for a “Netflix” on-demand video and you’ll have an absolutely contemporary film.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must go to Paris but not precisely in order to watch silent pictures…

"Die Yacht Der Sieben Sünden" (1928) By Luise & Jacob Fleck

The ship-owner Herr Reeder Roberts organizes a world trip on his luxury liner "Yoshiwara". Aboard are millionaires and famous artists, but also criminals. The manager of the ship-owner, Stefan Martini, has been murdered shortly before the departure in a mysterious way. Several persons are suspected and these are, precisely, the passengers of the “Yoshiwara”.

Frau Brigitte Helm became a world famous silent actress after the success of the
Grosse und landmark German film production “Metropolis” (1927) film directed by, as you probably know by now ( if not, well, this Herr Graf will desist in writing more of this irrelevant aristocratic silent reviews… ) Herr Fritz Lang. Hers was a short but very interesting silent career in which she worked with important German film directors. She adapted into the sound era well and adapted into marriage well also by marrying a rich aristocrat who retired her from the mad talkies - but that’s another and different Teutonic story.

The most remarkable merit of Frau Helm on the silent screen was her powerful, fascinating and enigmatic beauty. All of the directors who worked with her used this to the benefit of their stories. Her presence often evoked obscure and wicked temptation, wrapping her in mystery and danger.

“Die Yacht Der Sieben Sünden” ( The Yacht Of The Seven Sins - 1928) is a film directed by the Austrian pioneer director woman Frau Luise Fleck and her husband Herr Jacob Fleck, who accordingly used Frau Helm’s fascinating presence in what it is for this German count an interesting exercise in silent film style of a mysterious variety.

In this film, Frau Helm portrays a “femme fatale”, the dancer Marta Petrowna who will be involved in a crime and must use her fräulein weapons for selfish benefit. The film was inspired in a novel by Herr Paul Rosenhayn published in Cologne’s “Illustrierte Zeitung” and certainly the construction of the film, the developing of the intensity and the mystery of the picture is indebted to those classic and popular mystery novels.

The film has an interesting portrait of the “modern” 20’s with urban sceneries where influenced by the pictures of similar American productions of this genre ( an impersonal and international archetype film style ). The action later transfers to the boat “Yoshiwara” where the characters are involved in different degrees in the crime to be solved. There’s a score to settle involving wicked conflicts of suspicion, mistrust, hidden interests and inner sexual desires. The result is a sometimes intricate but resourceful mystery plot.

Obviously Frau Helm is the star of the film. The many close-ups and the different lavish garments she wore in the film confirm this (beautifully photographed by Herr Carl Drews und Edgar S. Ziesemer together with their mysterious night scenes or the urban and indoor shots). However, in comparison, she has to deal with another German actress, Frau Rina Marsa who has more acting resources, besides beauty, than Frau Helm and who in the film plays a singer.

Unfortunately the last act (Act 6) is missing so the picture includes the description of its content following the text of the “Illustrierte Film-Kurier” in order to know who finally committed the damn crime! “Die Yacht Der Sieben Sünden” is nonetheless an efficient German “film noire” in where the archetypes of such film genre are used proportionally. The classic mystery film ingredients create a mixture that results in a very convincing and, at the same time, unusual German film.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must sail in his rich heiress’ sinner arms.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

“Der Balletterzherzog: Ein Wiener Spiel von Tanz und Liebe” (1926) By Max Neufeld

The Arch-Duke Herr Sixtus especially cares for Arts and particularly for young ballet students. The same is true of the Arch-Duke A.D.C., Herr Count Paul Paladin who shares with the Arch-Duke a special affection for Frau Elisa Jenkins, a young ballet student.
Unexpectedly and thanks to a misunderstanding involving Frau Elisa and the Arch-Duke, the young student will become the new Prima Ballerina of the “Wiener Staatsoper”.

To say that this Herr Graf watched an Austrian silent operetta recently at the Schloss theatre, is certainly an evident and obvious remark, much as saying that a commoner watched an American silent western, a Bolshevist silent propaganda, a French silent romance or an Italian silent film full of divas.

In “Der Balletterzherzog: Ein Wiener Spiel von Tanz und Liebe” (1926), an Austrian silent romantic operetta in which you can watch -- besides luxurious indoor scenery featuring Palaces and the Vienna Opera -- a love triangle that involves an Arch-Duke, his adjutant and a young ballerina. Everything is filmed properly by Herr Max Neufeld ( e.g. his use of the travelling camera emphasizing the grandioseness of the Austrian scenery points out his inner artistic intentions ). He’s an Austrian film director who had an early career as an actor and he possessed a special fondness for those typical Austrian subjects that commoners like so much ... and obviously aristocrats don’t because they don’t like documentaries.

Accordingly, such an Austrian operetta casts the three main characters of the film with performers that play their roles properly: Herr Albert Paulig as an old aristocrat satyr, an Arch-Duke with a particular interest in ballet primadonnas, Frau Dina Gralla as the lively ballerina girl who goes to and fro into the arms of the Arch-Duke and his adjutant, played by Herr Werner Pittschau as a bewildered young Austrian Count.

Unfortunately the film hasn’t any rich and fat old heiress so necessary when aristocrats are around. There is only the presence of the Arch-Duke’s aunt does not provide a good example of the fattening diet that Austrian aristocrats like so much, because eating schnitzels all day it is not, exactly, a piece of cake…

Everyone is settled in elegant and astounding aristocratic indoor settings that are plentiful in Vienna, so in this film the art direction staff didn’t have anything to improve ...or to do. So, meanwhile, during their vacation, the director simply put the camera in front of all of those decadent and majestic settings.

Certainly the Viennese atmosphere helps to develop a predictable and, at the same time, witty and charming story ( in spite of all, this is Austria and the warm essence of decadence is everywhere ). Probably in other wicked hands this would be a more interesting silent film and full of malice. That’s mainly due to the characteristics of the story, the kind that commoners like very much to exaggerate, that is to say, the aristocrat’s carefree and lustful way of life. However, Herr Neufeld displays many virtues with a mixture of irreverence and hilarity. For examples: the Opera divas’ rivalry, the continual misunderstandings involving between the three main characters and the military /love manoeuvres at Mudwitz.

The classic and decadent operetta atmosphere that can be seen in the film is curiously intertwined with the modern 20’s of the last century. That fact at first bewilders the audience watching those Austrian fellows wearing those impeccable uniforms or even the Arch-Duke in civvies in the streets of Vienna! That’s not to forget the down to earth life of Frau Elisa who resides in a modest apartment. There’s a very interesting combination of modest common real life with the luxury and aristocratic Palaces in a witty contrast that Herr Neufeld certainly uses in order to distinguish and mock properly the aristocratic world of decadence. He transmits to the audience a world of fantasy and idealized dreams that only in the silent films can come true. For this reason “Der Balletterzherzog: Ein Wiener Spiel von Tanz und Liebe” is an excellent paradigm of a film operetta.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must continue to rehearsal about dancing on the tips of his aristocratic toes.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Max Au Couvent" (1914) By Max Linder

Mademoiselle Lydie is madly in love with Monsieur Max; both are youngsters and handsome and as a pair that live according to the time. They use the new technologies ( carrier pigeons ) in order to be in touch and in this way be punctual at their rendezvous.

But such a happy couple of lovers will suffer a misfortune when Mlle. Lydie’s father discovers the lovers kissing passionately outdoors. So due to the fact that Lydie’s fathers is a man with a strict convictions of the last century, that is to say, the XIX century …, he decides that his daughter must go to a convent in order to prevent such scandalous behaviour.

Before entering the convent, Mlle. Lydie secretly hides in her bag her modern cell apparatus, that is to say, the carrier pigeon. In this way she will later send a short text message to her lover telling him the terrible news of her religious imprisonment.
The moment that an amazed Monsieur Max receives the air mail message, he decides, with the help of an accomplice chauffeur, to go in the rescue of his lover.

In order to enter the convent, Monsieur Max’s chauffeur asks for help from the nuns by telling them that his master is feeling slightly ill. After some reluctance, the nuns decide to allow the entrance of the man into the convent in the cold light of day ( usually men only enter the convents under the cover of darkness ). Once Monsieur Max is inside, pretty soon he will try to rescue his lover.

But our hero goes to the wrong chamber to find Mlle. Lydie; so a terrible fuss begins which in turn causes a commotion in the peaceful convent. Consequently a thrilling chase after Monsieur Max up and down the convent ensues with nuns on the run and the fraulein inmates in convent nightdress too ( ah, what a wonderful sight for the eyes of this disrespectful German count!... ).

During the commotion, Monsieur Max will be able to scheme a new plan via ordering his chauffeur to impersonate him as the mysterious convent intruder. He thus kidnaps Mlle. Lydie by taking her out of the convent and flees with her by car. This is an excellent plan that allows Monsieur Max to become a hero in the eyes of the convent nuns and especially his father in law. He explains that he plans to save the poor child from the clutches of the mysterious convent intruder.

When Mlle. Lydie’s father is warned by phone and, MEIN GOTT!!... in “Polivision”!! ...about the terrible news, he goes quickly to the convent and, after an attempt to strangle Monsieur Max, they both decide to go to the rescue of Mlle. Lydie and so another thrilling chasing starts, this time by car.

During the chase they will find in the road a public square with a monument in the middle. So they decide to violate the traffic regulation found in every genuine silent comedy; that is to say, by circling the square twice, thrice and in fast motion.

When finally the accomplice chauffeur is reached, he tries to escape by foot carrying Mlle. Lydie in his wicked arms. But fortunately Monsieur Max, in what it is an admirable act of courage, shoots the kidnapper and that deadly fall liberates the object of captivity, that is to say, Mlle. Lydie.

Ah, at last Monsieur Max and Mademoiselle Lydie are reunited again and under the eyes and the blessing of the father in law! During such a touching scene, the accomplice chauffeur that is behind them playing dead, sits and laughs watching such a happy ending. Noticing this and in order that Herr Max isn’t discovered, he shoots him twice, thrice and even quadrice, and would blast the whole cartridge case if necessary ... everything for the sake of his love and happiness.

Ah, what a delightful short comedy is “Max Au Couvent” (1913) directed by Herr Max Linder!!... It’s an excellent and funny example of how finally pure love triumphs over any obstacle, no matter even if two important, terrible and influential institutions like family and church try to interfere with it.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must leave the priesthood.

"A Woman Of Paris" (1923) By Charles Chaplin

From the very start of the film “A Woman Of Paris” (1923), director, Herr Charles Chaplin, warns the audience by telling viewers that this is not a usual Herr Chaplin silent production (...probably in order to avoid misunderstandings and possible unreasonable conflicts from the audience later demanding their money back. Some revolutions have started in this way merely from commoners demanding such trifle things as a raise of their salaries or better conditions at their work… ) More precisely, in this film the tramp doesn’t appear; instead viewers are going to watch a silent and sophisticated “serious” drama.

And certainly after so many years since its prémiere, “A Woman Of Paris” continues to be an unusual Herr Chaplin film. It’s a very remarkable oeuvre that probably will astonish the new generation for its singularity, honesty and boldness.

There are two aspects that made “A Woman Of Paris” a special and remarkable silent film for this Herr Graf.

The first one is the audacity in showing Herr Chaplin in the story of a mistress in the merry Paris of the 20’s, a woman who enjoy freely a luxurious life thanks to the money and the excellent social position of her “protégée”.

In the film there is not a trace of false moral, hypocrisy or judgement. Frau Marie St. Clair ( Frau Edna Purviance ) knows perfectly where she is and how she lives and her particular condition and the advantages and inconveniences that she has for living in that way. When her protégée Herr Pierre Revel ( Herr Adolphe Menjou ) announce his marriage with a rich bourgeois fraulein, she consequently accepts the facts. After all, the three can continue with such a particular open-minded relationship if they want it and with Frau St. Clair as “the other” (obviously) without remorse and not overscrupulous.

It will be only change when Frau St. Clair accidentally meets again her old fiancée Herr Jean Millet ( Herr Carl Miller ). Herr Millet, now a humble painter, lives with his old mother in a modest apartment. Conscience begins to prick her with awareness of her particular life and the possibility of changing an easy and cosy life of luxury for a common one with a man that truly loves her. However, that’s finally a transitional state of mind, choosing, as Frau St. Clair does (and after some troubles with her old fiancée) the Paris joyous life.

As this Herr Graf mentioned before, the way Herr Chaplin depicts Frau St. Clair having a clear conscience of her particular way of life is admirable nowadays. Few films of that time displayed such liberal, adult and honest relationships although they were a common issue in Paris not to mention in Berlin…

The second remarkable aspect of “A Woman Of Paris” for this Herr Graf are the feminine characters of the picture. They are curious portraits of womanhood... powerful, varied and free minded. Women of Paris act and indistinctly do whatever they want, toying with men if necessary for their own interest ( Frau St. Clair’s friends ), influential, over-protective and castrating ( Herr Millet’s mother ) or, as always, making their own and fundamental decisions. Frau St. Clair does all of this and shows that women rule the world, as happened since the dawn of mankind, by the way…

“A Woman Of Paris” has some of those slight sentimental Herr Chaplin touches that don’t harm the film at all. One happens in the beginning of the film depicting the sorrowful and humble life of Frau St. Clair in her small town (while at the same time suffering the tyranny of her stepfather). Another is her frustrating trip to Paris that she finally must to do ...or another...alone when her fiancée’s father death comes suddenly. The atonement at the film’s end, probably the only Herr Chaplin renouncement for the sake of a moral and standard ending that after all and in spite of this, is balanced with a beautiful and at the same time bitter end.

This Herr Graf wants also to remark on the actors included in the film: especially the superb Herr Adolphe Menjou, elegant, cynic, sophisticated and charming as always and Frau Edna Purviance - inexpressive and nonchalant as a German old rich spinster. And who can forget the merry Paris flappers of the film madly enjoying the pleasures of Paris of the 20’s?

“A Woman Of Paris” is certainly an unusual Herr Chaplin film and certainly one of the better ones of his silent period which depicts an open-minded story in where adult human beings live their lives by accordingly deciding what it is the best for themselves without false moral attachments or social conventionalisms.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count has an appointment with a woman of Leipzig.

“Die Finanzen Des Großherzogs“ (1924) By F. W. Murnau

The Grand Duke of Abacco ( Herr Harry Liedtke ) is settled on a Mediterranean island living an altruistic, distracted and careful life. In reality, he’s full of debts but that’s a situation that could change thanks to an unexpected sulphur deposit found on his small duchy.
The Duke, besides his financial problems, is threatened by his villainous principal creditor, who soon stirs up a plot. The dastardly plans count on some of his malicious subjects. Meanwhile other strange characters become involved in what and in will be a peculiar plot full of financial conspiracies and politics concerning the Grand Duke.

Many geniuses in different Arts are also humans. So, due to this, they have virtues and defects. As it happens sometimes with inhuman aristocrats, their major virtues are their defects and minor sins from time to time are revealed. And believed or not, such human weakness was suffered also by the great German film director, Herr Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, who directed in 1924… a comedy!!.

Herr Murnau’s only comedy, “Die Finanzen des Großherzogs” it is certainly a rare oeuvre in his magnificent career ( although it is possible to appreciate some slight signs of humour in previous films as “Schloß Vogelöd“ - others Herr Murnau’s early film are not well remembered by this German count... ) “Die Finanzen des Großherzogs“ is a unique and special silent comedy piece stretching Herr Murnau’s parameters in what certainly is a bizarre film dealing with idealized and romantic subjects developed in a caricaturized way.

The story of the film is centered around the financial problems of the Grand Duke of Abacco. Together with the different characters involved in such odd story that Herr Murnau describes in a parallel way until little by little everyone comes together in what it is a special comedy of financial intrigue. It‘s a peculiar “totum revolutum” leading to an over-elaborated story.

After having directed “Phantom” (1922) from a script written by Frau Thea von Harbou ( in turn taken from a dense novel by Herr Gerhard Hauptmann ), this time Frau von Harbou and Herr Murnau considered it necessary to select a completely different literary option than the previous one. The choice was a light novel by Herr Frank Heller that in its adaptation to the silent screen has as a result a mixture of folkloric and stereotyped elements with an air of modern serial.

The film deals with idle and bankrupt aristocrats, a rich duchess, angry servants ( certainly, nothing new under the aristocratic sun ), blackmail, swindlers and even a Revolution. Everything is filmed in beautiful Yugoslavian places that give to the film an aesthetic aspect paralleling the story of the film in itself. That is to say, charming but at the same time irrelevant.., a Herr Murnau “divertimento”, certainly.

“Die Finanzen des Großherzogs“ is a transitional experiment, an exception in Herr Murnau’s superb silent career than in spite of its flaws has interest for any silent fan. It should be watched and considered simply as a weird and peculiar comedy of financial intrigues, a decadent passtime, ja wohl!.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must flee from his debts.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

-/
