"The Married Virgin" (1918) By Joseph Maxwell

“The Married Virgin” is a kind of an old newspaper serial of a story. It’s entertaining and it’s directed by Herr Joseph Maxwell. He tells us an intricate story full of unfortunate love affairs, unavowable secrets and merciless revenge.

A young and rich heiress (however, she’s too skinny for the taste of this Count) is seduced by an Italian fortune hunter Count. (As you can see, there is some resemblance between certain members of the European aristocracy). The Italian is in cahoots with the young heiress’ stepmother, herself an Italian aristocrat’s mistress. Both take advantage of the young girl through a marriage of convenience. They blackmail the young girl’s stepmother’s husband for a crime he committed during his time as an unscrupulous businessman.

One of the biggest charms of this movie is the handsome Rudolph Valentino, the ladies’ man par excellence of the world silent cinema. He was already specialised in playing strongly seductive characters for the fräulein and equally unscrupulously towards them. This was before his glorious period as an actor of Italian ancestry and one of the indisputable icons of the cinema history.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count has to converse closely with Herr Valentino about the especial seductive tactics that he uses with his skinny American heiresses.
