"Verdens Undergang" (1916) By August Blom

The Danish astronomer Herr Professor Wisemann ( as he is called) is a learned scientist who recently discovers a new comet. Herr Wisemann, an expert on the subject, calculates that the comet is likely to enter the earth’s atmosphere, causing huge destruction and disaster. ( It’s funny, but some centuries ago a very similar comet passed by the Earth and probably due that in those ancient times astronomy wasn’t yet perfected, the people thought that such sign in the sky meant a totally merry event… )

But even in such horrible situation, there are greedy and scrupulous men who will try to get some personal benefit from such disaster, as the mine owner Herr Frank Stoll intends to do…

“Verdens Undergang”, a film directed by Herr August Blom in the silent year of 1916, is a very interesting metaphor about the WWI; the film was made precisely during the Great War and there are constant and sibylline references about such warlike conflicts during the whole film.

As the main title implies, “Verdens Undergang”… (well… for all those illiterate youngsters who don’t know Danish, this means “the end of the world”)... reflected a terrible feeling that existed in Europe during the first and most important conflict between mankind. Specifically “North-Western Europe” is the place which according to Herr Professor Wisemann’s calculations, the comet will enter the Earth’s orbit, causing a huge disaster. Certainly that’s an obvious reference to the land in where the war caused destruction, damage and pain.

During the whole film there is a continuous feeling of helplessness since peace wasn’t in sight. For this reason the film is a consecutive sequence of uncertainties and how the worst nature of human beings ( ambition, greed, hate, familiar feuds ) arises to aggravate an unexpected big disaster in a turmoil of primal human conduct that will succumb with the coming of the comet.

But in spite of such cataclysm for mankind, there is a flicker of hope with a new and better future at the end of the film. Among the few survivors are a priest (the most obvious representation of hope) and two youngsters in love reunited again in a small chapel (more obvious religious references, ja wohl!) happy for being together again in the middle of such disaster. But after all, they are looking with hope at what is an uncertain future in a scene that exemplifies perfectly the yearning for a new hope reborn after the cataclysm.

The film is a proper and well manufactured Danish film production, that in those early times had a lot of reputation around the world ( the film starred Herr Olaf Fonss who was one of the most important early Danish actors and who worked with the most important German directors of that time too ). Seen in this picture are early techniques and special effects achieving a solid film narrative by intertwining the worst of human nature with the comet’s menace. In images in the form of a sci-fi film, everything is placed in a modern context that basically is valid today insofar as the pain and sorrow that causes the outrage of men.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count is waiting for a visit by Herr Halley.

"Ingeborg Holm" (1913) By Victor Sjöström

The Holms are a happy Swedish family who live an easy bourgeoisie life. In order to further improve their living, Herr Sven Holm requests a line of credit in the amount of 10.000 kronor in order to open a grocery shop.

Unfortunately things will change drastically for the Holms when Herr Sven falls ill with tuberculosis and dies. The grocery store, in the meanwhile, was left improperly unattended by an employee. Frau Ingeborg Holm is left bankrupt and alone with her three small children. This forces her to ask for help in a poorhouse.

Sweden has contributed to mankind some debatable inventions. For example, there’s the safe but unstylish tank automobiles made in that Northern country ( nothing in common with elegant “Hispano-Suiza” cars )... or.. that modernen and consequently, ugly furniture manufactured in pieces that the buyer must to try to assemble ( ah, the “Rococo” overloaded style! ) ...or ...with not a trace of a four string quartets, the Swedish instead tormented aristocracy with bands of four longhaired youngsters singing tunes that even today are popular among commoners…

But certainly the most important Swedish contribution to the whole world was Social Security for their population via a program that provides protection to their commoners with unemployment insurance, poverty protection and pensions, among others. It’s a public welfare state that other countries will model years later.

But unfortunately things weren’t always that way as Herr Victor Sjöström depicted in his early silent film “Ingeborg Holm”, directed by the Swedish director in the silent year of 1913.

The film was based on a play by Herr Nils Krok, who can be seen posing as the film starts in an elegant old photograph ( nothing in common with the coloured ones that the youngsters put in their modernen profiles ). The picture version tells the human tragedy of Frau Ingeborg Holm, who due to circumstances and the blows of fate, will face destitution. Her personal drama is worsened by the unsympathetic and strict poorhouse rules that during the last centuries were applied by Swedish officialdom.

Herr Sjöström admirably depicts the process of loss that affects Frau Holm’s life and her desperation, abandonment, helplessness and finally insanity. It’s a terrible sad odyssey that Frau Holm will suffer and includes making heartbreaking decisions such as when she is forced to put her children in an orphanage.

Certainly “Ingeborg Holm” is not an easy film. It is an uncomfortable drama in which Herr Sjöström denounces in a realistic and harsh way the injustice caused by strict central government laws that have no concern for their subjects.

Such bitterer sensations continue during the whole film climaxing at the end of the picture when Frau Holm, after 15 years, reunites again with one of her sons. This is a wonderful scene full of infinite sadness and very moving ( at this point it must be said that the original music score composed and performed by Herr David Drazin for the longhaired “Kino” modernen disc edition, is absolutely touching and elegant ).

But this is not a happy ending because there is no comfort in this reunion; there is not a chance in recovering the happy old days when times were better for Frau Holm and her three children. Instead Frau Holm has lived a miserable life in where everything she had and loved was destroyed. Herr Sjöström depicts a desperate, hard and moving portrait of a ruined life.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must pay a visit to his aristocratic fostered parents.

"Nedbrudte Nerver" (1923) By A. W. Sandberg

The intrepid police-reporter Herr Jimmie Brand ( Herr Gorm Schmidt ) works for the “Daily Wire”. After three days of investigation he solves the case of the Vibeleje murder. However, this put Herr Brand in a terrible stressed condition and for this reason his boss decides to give him two weeks of vacation.

But it will be a restless sabbatical because Herr Brand will witness a strange crime in broad daylight in the Hill Park as he is looking through the window of his home. Of course, our intrepid reporter decides to solve such a mysterious crime.

The style and artistic film influences of Herr A. W. Sandberg made him probably the most “Americanized” among the Danish film directors. That’s an aristocratic appreciation that can be verified in “Nedbrudte Nerver” ( The Hill Park Mystery - 1923), a fairly well made detective und comedy film in which the Danish director uses and plays with the elements that such kind of film needs.

The influences of “Nedbrudte Nerver” can be tracked back to early serial films as well as mystery and crime films. By mixing such film genres, Herr Sandberg, in a peculiar way, prevails with a special Danish sense of humor that certainly is full of witticism, irony and slander. Herr Sandberg creates a very peculiar and funny hero who’s a stressed and earnest police-reporter that will try to solve any crime he faces.

As this Herr Graf said before, the film has all the ingredients that this peculiar film genre needs; that is to say, a mysterious and unresolved crime, an enigmatic woman and a lot of misunderstandings. Let’s not forget to mention as an bonus the pretty Danish girls in bathing suits, some particularly Danish lovesick anatomy studies such as “you have such lovely eyes, especially the right one” or genuine Danish love proposals, as for an example, “I love you; you are not like any other. If others were like you, there would not be many others. I love you!”.

Herr Sandberg handled very well these film elements in an effective way, achieving a very entertaining and funny work. It is certainly a film that is harmless and predictable but precisely due to the unpretentious atmosphere together with Herr Sandberg professional nature and resoluteness, “Nedbrudte Nerver” is an estimable and a very good example of the spirit of mystery film. It’s one in which pure and simple entertainment is what matters over all and certainly this film fulfils such intentions.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must to keep secret some minor crimes of the aristocracy.

"Klovnen" (1926) By A. W. Sandberg

The “Bunding Circus” is a small circus on tour through Northern France; the proprietor is Herr James Bunding ( Herr Maurice de Féraudy ), an Englishman who had lived all his long life in France. He has a beautiful daughter, Frau Daisy ( Frau Karina Bell ) who works as an horse acrobat in the show. Herr Joe Higgins ( Herr Gösta Ekman ), the star of the “Cirque Bunding” as its musical clown. Both youngsters will fall in love and on the very day of their official engagement, Herr Higgins receive a very important offer from Herr Marcel Philippe ( Herr Robert Schmidt ), the most famous Parisien artist in costume, to perform his show in the city of Paris.

The film “Klovnen”, directed by Herr A. W. Sandberg in the silent year of 1926 is certainly an exceptional film, a wonderful surprising oeuvre for any silent film fan. The film is a remake of Herr Sandberg’s own film from 1917 which starred the famous Danish actor Herr Valdemar Psilander. Unfortunately this Herr Von has not watched this last one but certainly the remake is an excellent “circus film” from that genuine and specific silent film genre that this Herr Graf likes so much.

Herr Sandberg takes his time in order to develop and depict in detail a particular a three sided relationship and the tragedy that follows ( the running time of the film is 130 minutes ). For this reason the film at first seems weak, even simplistic in some way. However, there are aspects as the film unfolds that certainly reveal their artistic intentions...and thus Herr Sandberg measures and carefully depicts the initial love story between Herr James und Frau Daisy in order to accentuate and appraise the drama that such young couple will suffer as they move to Paris.

So, during the first part of the film, Herr Sandberg little by little depicts the construction of a beautiful and pure love story, showing the dreams, hopes and joys of the young couple. That’s until they change their easy modest circus life and the dusty roads of Northern France for the luxury and temptations of the big evil city and its creatures. Then Herr Sandberg shows the deconstruction of such a love story and the particular fall into disgrace of Herr Higgins, in what it is a remarkable portrait of despair, desperation and madness that certainly Herr Gösta Ekman plays pretty well.

For this reason, there are two different parts of the film. Herr Sandberg’s artistic intention is in reflecting in its entirety the motives of the tragedy that will be suffered in the lives of Herr Higgins und Frau Daisy. These two youngsters had everything in life ( rich, famous and even Herr Higgins a kindly mother-in-law! ) but finally lose everything. It’s a romantic and modern drama exquisitely photographed by Herr Christen Jorgensen as can be seen in the beautiful restoration edited by the Danish film institute.

“Klovnen” is in some ways, the paradigm of any genuine circus film, that is to say, a hyper-realistic oeuvre in where the primal instincts and feelings of human beings are at loose ( love, hate, misery, revenge ) and it’s powerfully affected by the artistic environment. The film addresses the collateral dangers of success or fiasco and additionally in this case, the idealized and cinematographic atmosphere of that superlative French city. Paris is a perilous and modern city that finally will corrupt and destroy the innocence and happiness of Herr Higgins and Frau Daisy. It’s a shining place of luxury that in those old times was full of mannequin parades and couturiers where one flirted dangerously with women ( nowadays this has changed completely, ja wohl!). But thanks to Herr A. W. Sandberg skilful and exquisite film direction, “Klovnen” stand out as a romantic drama that powerfully exemplifies the artistic virtues of what must be considered an excellent and powerful circus film.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must to clown around one of his Teutonic rich and fat heiresses.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Noidan Kirot" (1927) By Teuvo Puro

Frau Selma und Herr Simo are a young couple of newly-weds who are on a long travel far North to their new home in Utuniemi. There waiting for them is Herr Simo’s sister, Frau Elsa who had become blind when she was a child. In surrounding Utuniemi work some lumbermen; they’re rough people who Herr Simo doesn’t like at all.

When Frau Simo is visiting his parents-in-law, Frau Elsa tells Frau Selma a strange story about a witch from Lapland who lived in Utuniemi called Jantukka. Jantukka created much harm for the Finns. During a terrible battle and before the witch was murdered, he cursed all the people in Utuniemi so that henceforth their offspring will be blind. That’s precisely the reason of Frau Elsa’s blindness.

But during Herr Simo’s absence a terrible incident will happen. When Selma is checking their fishing nets in the lake of Veksalahti, three lumbermen led by one called Fat Sakar, take advantage of the helpless woman…

“Noidan Kirot” ( The Curse Of The Witch ) was directed by Herr Teuvo Puro in the silent year of 1927 and is considered in the country of the thousand lakes as the first Finnish horror film. It’s a picture that was based on a novel by Herr Väinö Kataja about the Lappland region and the old superstitions of the people who lived there.

The film is certainly very interesting, subtle and appalling for Finns or German counts, for the old stories, curses, witches and the sibylline doomed atmosphere that is depicted in the film.

Herr Puro combines wisely the old superstitions of the region ( old stories of ancient times, intangible but vivid after so many years ) with contemporary menaces represented in the lumbermen. These latter are real and very dangerous, an interesting metaphor, ja wohl! Thus is combined what it is a matter of belief about superstitions of the past, with the real presence of the lumbermen in the beautiful place of Utuniemi...and these nowadays sorcerer’s apprentices.

In “Noidan Kirot” the Finnish environment shines at its best ( beautiful landscapes in where the hard daily life is depicted ) and the lumbermen violence and threats ( dark in what is supposed to be an idyllic place). It’s combined together with Kantuka’s cursing ( Herr Puro use double exposures and some camera movement in order to emphasize such unhealthy atmosphere ) in creating a subtle and disturbing atmosphere. In this background, the seeds of evil around Utuniemi finally will give birth in Frau Selma’s first-born, a disorderly infant that revives terrible memories for the young couple.

And that’s certainly Herr Puro’s achievement... to make a horror / fantasy film with elements of the past but setting these in a modern context. He chooses the largest and northernmost of the regions of Finland as the locale to hide ancient superstitions. Our hero will have finally the chance to avenge and redeem his family cursed fate ( from the past or the present) in a oeuvre with a thrilling film narrative. It’s a disturbing and original picture in where the inner and primal fears together with the primitive and evil instincts of men, are the true main characters of the film.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must curse some of his undisciplined servants.

"Anna-Liisa" (1922) By Teuvo Puro & Jussi Snellman

Frau Anna-Liisa is in love with Herr Johannes to whom she is engaged. However, as the wedding day approaches, an unwelcome figure from Anna-Liisa’s past returns to her little village: Herr Mikko, her old boyfriend. Herr Mikko, with the help of his wicked mother, tells Frau Anna-Liisa that unless she marries him, he will reveal an awful secret she has hidden for years.

“Anna-Liisa” was directed in the silent year of 1922 by Herr Teuvo Puro together with Herr Jussi Snellman. It was the first Finnish feature to be sold abroad and was seen in countries like Norway, Sweden, France and even the United States.

The film is based on a play by Frau Minna Canth who was a very important Finnish writer and a champion of women’s rights, a pioneer and combative Nordic feminist, ja wohl! This is reflected in the powerful and impressive feminine portrait of Anna-Liisa, tormented but valiant and determined, a woman who will decide her own fate, threats and coercion aside. She is excellently played by the actress Frau Helmi Lindelöf.

The dramatic and intense story of the film is equal to other Nordic rural dramas of those early silent times, such as those directed by masters like Herr Victor Sjöström and Herr Mauritz Stiller. Like them Herr Puro invokes nature as part of the dramatic development of the story. A flashback shows Frau Anna-Liisa’s terrible deed which involves a hideous taboo that is still shocking nowadays. Still, there is atonement and Frau Anna-Liisa accepts responsibility for her past and consequently decides her future. Herr Puro brilliantly blends indoor sets which suggest the theater with the naturalism of the exterior scenes.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must confess an aristocratic trifle of the past to one of his Teutonic fat and rich heiresses.

"Ollin Oppivuodet" (1920) By Teuvo Puro

Herr Teuvo Puro is considered in his native Finland as their most remarkable silent film pioneer; he was one of the founders of two important Finnish production film companies, “Suomi-Filmi” ( Finland’s oldest film company ) und “Komedia-Filmi”; Herr Puro’s relatively short career began in 1907 when he directed the first Finnish silent feature, “Salaviinanpolttajat,” unfortunately a lost film. Herr Puro also directed “Sylvi” (1913) of which 13 minutes are still extant, making it the oldest surviving Finnish film. In 1920, Puro directed “Ollin Oppivuodet” which was the first feature film to be produced after Finland become an independent country in 1917; so, as you can see, Herr Puro’s film career set many milestones.

“Ollin Oppivuodet” ( Olli’s Apprenticeship ) was based on Frau Anni Swan’s eponymous and popular children’s novel and its premiere was a huge and remarkable event attended by the Finnish president and many members of government ( However, no aristocrats were in attendance)

The film depicts the story of Kinder Olli, a rascal who runs away from home fearing a terrible spanking from his father due to his continual bad behaviour. Ollin’s cousin, Herr Kaarle, owner of the deteriorated Harmaala Manor, later finds the child wandering alone and decides to take him in, encouraged by Herr Kaarle’s aunt, Frau Matleena. However they are motivated by greed not compassion as they pretend that the boy has drowned, making Herr Karrle the only heir to the Koivumäki Manor, which primarily belongs to Olli. The two conspirators disguise Olli as a girl and spirit him away to Sweden where he is apprenticed to the shoemaker Herr Simolin.

“Ollin Oppivuodet” can be described ( although this Herr Graf hasn’t read the original Frau Swan novel since it was written in Finnish… ) as a film with Dickensian overtones and atmosphere, playing like a classical newspaper serial story that includes the usual elements meant to touch and move the audience: poor little rich boys, poverty, misfortunes, orphan girls, a number of scoundrels but with everything turning ok in the end.

The contrast of riches and poverty is very well done and the social conditions are depicted in a realistic manner. Olli has many mishaps, including a disastrous attempt to become a sailor with his friend Ränni-Pelle and later ending up in an institution, accused of robbery. Every episode is perfectly performed by the two young actors, as naïf as their characters. In spite of difficulties and misfortunes, a message of hope prevails.

The film does suffer from a lack of rhythm and continuity but the classical literary inspiration and the period atmosphere make up for that and the film avoids excessive sentimentality and tear jerking.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must continue with his apprenticeship to a bon vivant.

"Häiden Vietto Karjalan Runomailla" (1920) By A. O. Väisänen

Since its beginning, the camera was an excellent invention to register events of different origins and importance, a privileged witness to history

“Häiden Vietto Karjalan Runomailla” ( Karelian Wedding In The Land Of The Kalevala ) is an early and valuable documentary ( more exactly, a recreation ), an ethnological Finnish silent film about a traditional Karelian wedding. It was the work of an expedition of Finnish ethnologists in the silent year of 1920, headed by Herr A. O. Väisänen of the Kalevala society.

“Karelianism” was a cultural movement born in the 19th century that influenced notably the Finnish arts, strengthening and developing the Finnish identity thanks to the national romanticism included in the fundamental epic poem the “Kalevala”( which for Finnish people is the equivalent of the “Nibelungenlied” for Prussians). It sums up the essence of Finnish culture in terms of tradition and mythology.

The film reconstructs a traditional Karelian wedding; the realism and details are thanks to the help of the inhabitants of the place ( the film was made in Suojärvi, Border Karelia, on the northern side of Lake Ladoga, now in Russia due to Finland lost having lost it in WWII ). The amateurs actors play themselves and obviously know pretty well the archaic proceedings of a traditional Karelian wedding, a fascinating and long ceremony that includes lamentations, incantations and peculiar rituals, a wonderful document about ancient ceremonies ( the one concession was that indoor filming was done on sets because there wasn’t electricity at the Karelian village ). It gives a vivid picture of old traditions that might otherwise have been lost, a way of life that could have been forgotten entirely but whose memory is preserved by the silent camera. Even this German count found it all enlightening. “Häiden Vietto Karjalan Runomailla” is a priceless ethnological film document, ja wohl!.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must flee from a traditional Teutonic wedding.

"Korkein Voitto" (1929) By Carl von Haartman

The Baron Henrik von Hagen is an idle Finn bourgeois ( as you can see, decadent people are all over the world… ); after eleven years, he meets again an old acquaintance ,Madame Vasilevna, a foreigner who during her youthful days was a ballet dancer while Herr Baron was her faithful cavalier. Once they are reunited again in Helsinki, Herr Baron discovers that Madame Vasilevna earns her living with a new hobby: she likes very much painting frozen Finn landscapes but especially the ones around military bases.

“Korkein Voitto” ( The Highest Triumph ) was directed by Herr Carl von Haartman in the silent year of 1929 and it was the first film directed by this peculiar Finnish director, although previously Herr Haartman had a very interesting life and career.

During his youthful days, Herr Haartman had a military career and he participated in the Finnish civil war of 1918. During the mid 20’s he went to Hollywood where he collaborated or played with very important directors of the time, namely Herr William Wellman with whom Herr Haartman, a military expert, supervised every flying sequence of “Wings” (1927) and Herr Erich von Stroheim’s “The Wedding March” (1928) wherein Haartman played what is supposed to be a German officer, a role that was his speciality during his acting days in Hollywood (though he was often un-credited).

With such important film background experience, Herr Haartman was selected by the most important Finland film studio, “Suomi-Filmi” to direct “Korkein Voitto” and certainly the Hollywood experience can be appreciated in the impeccable and excellent film direction. The art direction and cinematography demonstrate an appreciation for film classicism, a high finish film made by a Finnish director, ja wohl!.

Herr Haartman has a fluid film narrative ( travelling, air scenes ) constructing a story of romance and political schemes in which stereotypes are used proportionally and in a light way ( an idle Baron, a mysterious woman, a suspicious Jew, an expensive taxi driver… ) adding action and a slight sense of humour, achieving finally a very interesting although uneven film.

The main characters of the picture, Herr Baron und Madame Vasilevna, played by Herr Haartman himself und Frau Kerstin Nylander, go all over Finland, combining in this way urban scenes together with others of the wild and frozen Finnish landscapes (there’s even some seal hunting, a peculiar pastime for Finns). The dramatic intensity of this story of hidden intrigues works well, even though the characters are rather clichéd. Everything is done “Hollywood style” but well adapted to the Finnish setting and circumstances.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must go Teutonic seal hunting.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

-/-

"Fänrig Ståls Sägner” (1926) By John W. Brunius

The history of Finland, that European land of a thousand lakes, was always related to Sweden for of which it was part until 1809, and the Russian Empire of which Finland was made an autonomous state, the Grand Duchy of Finland, since that year.

“Fänrig Ståls sägner”, directed by Herr John W. Brunius in the silent year of 1926, depicts precisely the transitional period of uncertainty that happened in the history of that European country during the Finnish war of 1808-1809. Events according to Herr Johan Ludwig Runeberg (who was a very important Finnish poet) are precisely used as the film describes in a romantic way Herr Runeberg’s poem; many inter-titles in the film are quotes.

In spite of being an important Swedish film budget production, the film’s many actors were Finnish and much of the film was filmed in Finland. This created an excellent paradigm of the duality that Finland suffered in those times trying to maintain its independence and culture from the Swedish (and Russians) with a stubborn Finnish determination to defend their genuine idiosyncrasy. Depicted in the film are many scenes in the form of a romantic and nationalist exaltation of the land as well as scenes of many heroic deeds.

The Swedish policy of war and its internal contradictions together with the Russian strong determination to annex Finland is depicted in the film sometimes in a confusing way. That’s due to the many characters involved in the film and the many historical facts that Herr Runeberg is trying to depict in two long hours.

The film story is remembered in flashback by an old lieutenant who participated in the war as recounted to a young teacher. Besides the war epic, the film also includes a love story among two youngsters who are involved in the turmoil of the war incidents. This makes the film kind of “collage” that many times lacks rhythm and film continuity; as the Teutonic saying goes, it’s a situation of “Jack of all trades and master of none”…

In spite of the lack of intensity in developing the historical events depicted in the film, the picture has vigorous battle scenes where a lot of extras were needed. They’re not elaborated or complicated ones, certainly ( more camera movements would have improved the action needed in order to transmit the clamour of war ). However, there are moments in which the war epic achieves moments of tragic lyricism and beauty.

“Fänrig Ståls sägner” is probably too ambitious film in its various and erratic artistic film purposes and failed especially in telling the historical process of the events that the picture tries to describe. However, at the same time it is successful in the film’s aesthetic and patriotic artistic purposes by depicting an important transitional period in the Finland history.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must continue to rule implacably his independent Germanic Duchess.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

-/-

"Brudeferden I Hardanger" (1926) By Rasmus Breistein

After the impasse of the Viennese intermission, this Herr Graf resumes his aristocratic activities in regards to the silent screenings at the Schloss theatre. ( Other and more decadent ones were continued merrily during the staying of this Herr Von in the Austrian capital city.)

And what better way to start another silent year than discovering unknown Nordic silent films? With some exceptions, many film productions of those cold European countries are not well known to silent connoisseurs. That’s generally due to whimsy film distribution policies or few public exhibitions of these films in theatres. This is a great error that thanks to modernen times, new formats, new distribution and broadcasting channels is being corrected thus finally making available for silent film fans these excellent oeuvres.

The first picture of this exclusive aristocratic film programme was “Brudeferden I Hardanger” ( The Bridal Party In Hardanger ) directed by Herr Rasmus Breistein in the silent year of 1926. It’s a wonderful silent film that must be discovered and enjoyed by any silent film fan around the world.

The film depicts a truncated love story through the whole life of the youngster fraulein Marit Skjolte ( Frau Aase Bye ) who is in love with Anders ( Herr Henry Gleditsch ). The latter promised Marit to marry her when he was returning from a two year absence from their little town. But the fact is that never will happen because after four years of Marit having no news or letter from Anders, finally she discovered that he’s to marry a wealthy fraulein in the church of their little town.

“Brudeferden I Hardanger” has remarkable aspects that made this film a very special one with peculiarities connected with the surroundings that decisively influence the lives of the main characters of the film.

As in many Nordic films, nature is always a very powerful and important film character in the story and plays a prominent role in accordingly developing the film narrative that the director needed or wanted depending on his own personal artistic interests.

In “Brudeferden I Hardanger”, nature is in the background but, at the same time, is a fundamental character that is used by Herr Breistein very wisely. From the very start of the film, we view the beautiful landscapes of the Hardanger fjord which witnessed a social tragedy, the massive emigration of the inhabitants of the little town to America who flee from a beautiful but impoverished land. It’s a land, however, that is incapable of giving enough resources to the population and they begin searching for a better life out of the country. Nature becomes a relevant and even cruel master that has no mercy with the people who live in the surrounding areas.

The hard conditions in the fjord are suffered by our heroine when she applies for a post with the county judge for a job in where she is treated harshly by the judge’s wife. After the shock of her fiancée’s marriage she is forced to take a post with an old cotter up in the mountains. These situations together with her sad feelings, don’t change until she finally decides to marry Tore ( Herr Vilhelm Lund ) a rich farmer who always loved her in (spite her indifference) and it’s a last chance for Marit, certainly. In this part of the movie, nature is especially used as a decisive character that emphasizes the difficult social conditions and the social class differences in the fjord.

But nature has its more aesthetic part in the film as can be seen especially during the bridal voyage down the Hardanger fjord and its beautiful and evocative scene inspired by one of the most well-known paintings in Norwegian art history. Certainly Herr Breistein captures its beauty and romantic scent with an inflexion point in the film that accelerates the pace in a dramatic way.

Because Marit waited for years for the return of her fiancée and then realized that her waiting was in vain, the previous timid, innocent and young fraulein grows into an embittered, resented old woman ( Frau Gunhild Schytte Jacobsen ) who never will forget the betrayal Anders did to her. It’s a terrible deception and that hate that even will transmit to her own sons.

The human portrait of Marit is certainly outstanding and, is well transmitted by the two actresses that perform the character within the different times of main character’s life. Depicted are events that transform a good and hopeful young woman in a selfish and vindictive old woman. In the end Marit realizes this and accepts that in a way she has lost her whole life, living one that she didn’t want to,

The transition between youth and old age is a small lapse of time within the film culminated and reflected upon in the last scene of the film. It’s a beautiful but terribly sad scene in where two old people are finally reunited at the end of their lives, aware of their lost time that will never be recovered and keeping only memories of better but old times.

The film was recently restored by the Norwegian Film Institute in what it was an enormous and complicated task that, thank Gott, was a successful one. This can be appreciated in the available pristine copy of the film with superb music arranged, composed and adapted by Herr Halldor Krogh which enhances the beauty and sorrow that involved in this excellent silent film.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must take a boat voyage down any Teutonic estuary, the Galitzien version of the Norwegian fjords.

From Vienna: The Aristocratic New Year's Celebration 2011

During the next fortnight this modernen diary will be closed due to some wild, decadent and obviously aristocratic mad evenings. This German count will celebrate at an exclusive and special European aristocratic ball room in order to bring in the new longhaired year of 2011.

Accordingly and properly within aristocratic parameters, just what will be the special place in order to celebrate the new and aristocratic silent year?? ... There is only one place on Earth where a German count easily can be at home in these special days. It’s a place that conjures up the quintessential aristocratic and decadent way of life that, after many centuries, maintains intact its exclusivity and old ancient atmosphere. Thanks Gott that place it is not very far from Germany; it’s Wien ( Vienna for those who doesn’t speak elegant European languages ).

So during the next days, this Herr Graf will enjoy the snowy Austrian capital city and its peculiar and cold atmosphere ( with the permission of the weather and especially the whimsy of Spanish air traffic controllers… ). What better way to properly celebrate than strolling the New Year’s path inside an elegant aristocratic “fiaker”, a classical Viennese two-horse carriage? Such transport is especially useful for going to Imperial Balls or celebrating the New Year in luxurious style by attending the performance of Herr Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” at the Wiener Staatsoper (or the “Vienna State Opera” for those illiterate longhaired youngsters who doesn’t speak European languages mentioned above).

So, Mein Liebers… for this reason and because of his aristocratic absence, this Herr Graf wants to now wish you all a happy New Year hoping that 2011 will bring us more of these wonderful silent films that make life, even aristocratic ones, more bearable. Silent pictures that this Herr Von would like very much to review for you during the next year are with, natürlich!!, the permission of Frau Sissi, Duchess of Bavaria , Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia.

"Die Frau, Nach Der Man Sich Sehnt" (1929) By Curtis Bernhardt

Henri Leblanc ( Herr Uno Henning ), descendant of a bankrupted Industrialist family, marries a rich heiress in order to save the family firm. On the honeymoon, Herr Leblanc meets a mysterious woman on the train, Frau Stascha ( Frau Marlene Dietrich ) with whom he will fall desperately in love. He goes to ruin with her, leaving his wife on the train and fleeing with Frau Stascha to Cannes.

But Stascha, bound to Dr. Karoff ( Herr Fritz Korner ), especially needs the protection of Herr Leblanc due that fact that her relation with the Dr. is connected with the knowledge of a crime.

“Die Frau, Nach Der Man Sich Sehnt” (1929) ( “Three Loves” ), a film directed by Herr Curtis Bernhardt, it is a very remarkable oeuvre and certainly the best silent film made by Frau Marlene Dietrich.

Before this excellent film, Frau Dietrich was a cute and plump fraulein that had a not very impressive career in roles directed by different and sometimes important German directors. That’s until Herr Bernhardt takes advantage of all of her true possibilities for the silent screen emphasizing those same traits that later Herr von Sternberg uses in a similar way for the sake and glory of Frau Dietrich.

At this point it is necessary for this German count to say that the work that Herr von Sternberg did with his most outstanding pupil wasn’t at all entirely original and exclusive as evidenced in “Die Frau, Nach…”, Herr Bernhardt did splendid work in the same artistic and dramatic parameters which, in turn, Herr Dietrich enhanced in the special atmosphere of the silent screen. In years later, it was for Herr von Sternberg to enlarge the talkie career of the Teutonic actress.

The great cinematography by the reputable Herr Curt Courant und Herr Hans Scheib, created those classic sculptured face shots of the actress amid shadows and enigmatic angles creating the paradigm of a “femme fatale”. This shines especially in this mysterious love triangle drama. Thus results an “amour fou”, perfectly developed in different sceneries with everything for the sake of Frau Dietrich. The film is an unconditional gift and a perfect vehicle for the Teutonic actress that certainly owes a lot to this film’s construction in a manner that later became her personal and well-known iconic image.

But not only Frau Dietrich deserves attention in this film; the male main characters of the picture ( Herr Fritz Korner und Herr Uno Henning ) did excellent work too as two tormented lovers whose fascination and infatuation for Frau Stascha will bring them only misery and a doomed life.

The film transits between different sceneries. There are segments of the film that are very well defined and in continuity, developing the increasing passion and dramatism that brings the main characters of the film to life. These start with the industrialist images of the first part of the picture ( in those days, Germans liked a lot scenes of engines, pistons and steam… ) which are mechanical, emotionless and symbolic of Herr Leblanc’s marriage of convenience. They continue to the uncontrolled passion that Herr Leblanc will experience in the train when he meets Frau Stascha via visualizing an era when the train was a romantic and unpredictable mean of transport... and had nothing in common with the aseptic and fast high-speed trains of nowadays. And at the party at the hotel during the night of the Holy Sylvester, the facts accelerate to the end of this peculiar tragic love triangle via a “in crescendo” film story in which the eroticism, drama and wild passion are depicted in a very remarkable and fascinating way.

“Die Frau, Nach Der Man Sich Sehnt” is an outstanding silent film that depicts one of those mad love stories than only can happen in silent films and confirms that Frau Dietrich already existed and was “invented” by Herr Bernhardt years before Herr von Sternberg.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must talk with Frau Dietrich about old German times.
