The source of the blurred copy of “Kaerlighed Og Venskab” (Love And Friendship) (1912) directed by Herr Eduard Schnedler-Sørensen, that this Herr Graf watched in the Schloss theatre recently, was from the Library of Congress; it’s a-ahem- “restored” copy that includes only four intertitles in three different languages ( English, Spanish und German ) that have nothing to do with the story depicted in the picture. The most terrible thing about this was the fact that this German count had to watch such torture to the eyes with horrible glasses instead of the elegant monocle normally used during the silent matinees. Happily, the multilingual and incongruous intertitles, weren’t necessary at all in order to comprehend the story thanks to Herr Schnedler-Sørensen’s effective film narrative, striking evidence of the skills of the Danish director and the modernity one hundred years ago, of the “Nordisk” film productions.
And certainly “Kaerlighed Og Venskab” is a modern film in concept and technique; the female main characters of the picture are two bourgeois and healthy women who enjoy the pleasures of their idle and athletic lives, practicing gymnastics, riding, swimming ( in this, Frau Yvonne is not an expert… ) fencing and even chess; up to date and sporting women who will briefly even share the same man though without the consent of Frau Edith, the wife. In order to depict this story about the limits of love and friendship, Herr Schnedler-Sørensen spends time contrasting the very different bourgeois lives of the two friends; Frau Yvonne is a successful singer and a liberal woman in comparison with the conservative and conventional Frau Edith. The director brings rhythm to the story even though the camera remains static, an imperceptible fact this thanks to Herr Schnedler-Sørensen narrative resources.
The film stars Frau Clara Wieth, who after her divorce from the Danish actor Herr Carlo Wieth in 1917, was known as Clara Pontoppidan; she was a very popular actress of the time, working with the most important early Danish film directors such as Herr A. W. Sandberg, Herr August Blom, Herr Holger-Madsen, Herr Carl Theodor Dreyer, Herr Benjamin Christensen and Herr Eduard Schnedler-Sørensen, natürlich!!.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must continue his friendship with the woman of a prominent Teutonic aristocrat.

Frau Edith und Frau Yvonne son dos jóvenes danesas a las cuales une una gran amistad, amistad que perdurará en el tiempo hasta que Frau Yvonne decide compartir el marido de su querida amiga…
La fuente de la borrosa copia que éste Herr Graf pudo contemplar recientemente en el teatro del Schloss de “Kaerlighed Og Venskab” (1912) de Herr Eduard Schnedler-Sørensen, provenía de la institución americana “Library Of Congress”, una, ejem… copia “restaurada” en la cual se incluían cuatro rótulos en tres idiomas diferentes ( inglés, castellano y germánico ) rótulos que no guardaban ninguna relación con la historia que se narraba en el filme.
Lo más terrible de éste asunto fue que éste conde germánico tuvo que ver ese nitrato borroso, con unas horrendas gafas en vez del elegante monóculo que habitualmente se usa en cada una de las matinées silentes, pues en relación con los incongruentes y políglotas rótulos del filme, éstos no eran en absoluto necesarios para poder seguir sin problemas la trama de la película, debido a la eficiente narración cinematográfica de Herr Schnedler-Sørensen, una clara evidencia de la habilidad del director danés y la modernidad que hace ya un siglo tenían las producciones “Nordisk”.
Y ciertamente “Kaerlighed Og Venskab” es un primerizo y moderno filme en su concepto y técnica silente; los dos protagonistas femeninos de la película son dos burguesas y sanas mujeres a las cuales les gusta disfrutar de los placeres de su ociosa y atlética vida, practicando gimnasia, equitación, natación ( en esta modalidad deportiva, frau Yvonne no destaca especialmente… ) esgrima ¡e incluso ajedrez!, modernas y deportivas mujeres de su tiempo que incluso llegarán a compartir al mismo hombre, sin el conocimiento y consentimiento de la esposa de éste, Frau Edith…
Para narrar ésta historia acerca de los límites del amor y la amistad, Herr Schnedler-Sørensen filma en varios escenarios, puestos éstos al servicio de la narración de la película, ilustrando de ésta forma las vidas tan diferentes y burguesas que llevan las dos amigas, Frau Yvonne toda una exitosa cantante y muy liberal en comparación con su amiga Frau Edith, más convencional y conservadora ésta, consiguiendo el director dar continuidad y ritmo a la historia compensando el hecho de que la película esté rodada con una cámara prácticamente estática, un hecho éste casi imperceptible gracias a los recursos narrativos de Herr Schnedler-Sørensen.
El filme está protagonizado por Frau Clara Wieth, la cual tras su divorcio con el actor danés Herr Carlo Wieth en el año 1917, sería conocida a partir de entonces como Clara Pontoppidan, una actriz muy popular en su época la cuala trabajó con los más importantes y pioneros directores daneses, como Herr A. W. Sandberg, Herr August Blom, Herr Holger-Madsen, Herr Carl Theodor Dreyer y Herr Benjamin Christensen, incluyendo entre éstos a Herr Schnedler-Sørensen, natürlich!... imprescindibles directores daneses en la historia del cinematógrafo, cuyo trabajo contribuyó de forma decisiva en el desarrollo de la narración cinematográfica.
Y ahora, si me lo permiten, les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este conde germánico tiene que continuar su amistad con la mujer de un distinguido aristócrata teutón.
