The film “Der Kaufmann von Venedig” ( The Jew Of Mestri ) was written, produced and directed by Herr Peter Paul Felner in the silent year of 1923 and is a free adaptation of “Merchant of Venice” written by Herr William Shakespeare.
It is an elegant and expensive German film production that was shot on location in beautiful and decadent Venice with some of the most important Teutonic actors of the time: Frau Henny Porten, Herr Harry Liedtke und Werner Krauss and even the mysterious Herr Max Schreck .
So as you can see, mein liebers, it seems that we have a film that should be great, given the cast and production values, but unfortunately it isn’t so…
In spite of such important literary material ( that was “slightly modified in order to not offend the modern standard of good taste” as is written in a title card at the beginning of the picture, although this Herr Von believes that this was an excuse for not paying royalties ) and reputable actors, Herr Felner’s direction is ordinary and even boring. He does little more than illustrate some passages of the manuscript and then counts on the beauty of Venice to do the rest. Alas, it’s not enough.
The actors, although correct, perform their roles in a very a theatrical way. Herr Felner does not handle the scenes of the Jewish community very well and the stereotyping seems to have a subtle malice in it, a subject that in Teutonic hands is often dangerous.
In spite of the interesting material with which Herr Felner worked, the film must be judged a failure largely due to his sluggish and unimaginative direction. The tragic moments are insubstantial and the comedy doesn’t work so we are left with a routine costume film full of wigs, tights, and the scenery of Venice.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must practise being a gondolier with one of his Teutonic rich heiresses.

La película “Der Kaufmann von Venedig” fue escrita, producida y dirigida por Herr Peter Paul Felner en el año silente de 1923 y se trata de una libre adaptación de la obra “El Mercader De Venecia” de Herr William Shakespeare.
Estamos ante una considerable producción silente germánica, filmada en la bella y decadente Venecia, haciendo uso el director de bellos y elegantes escenarios de dicha ciudad tanto en interiores como en exteriores, una película en la cual participaron importantes actores teutónicos de la época, tales como Frau Henny Porten, Herr Harry Liedtke und Herr Werner Krauss e incluso parece ser que el misterioso Herr Max Schreck andaba por allí.
Por lo tanto, como ustedes bien pueden comprobar mein liebers, parece ser que estamos ante una notoria producción germánica debido a su gran presupuesto y al importante reparto, pero desafortunadamente no es así…
Y es que a pesar de contar Herr Felner con un importante material literario, el cual fue “ligeramente modificado para no ofender los valores del buen gusto”, tal y como se advierte en uno de los rótulos al principio del filme ( aunque éste Herr Von cree que gracias a esos retoques Herr Felner quería evitar así el tener que pagar derechos de autor ), además de importantes actores, la dirección de Herr Felner resulta ser plana e incluso bastante aburrida, limitándose a poner en imágenes ciertos pasajes del manuscrito original pensando que la bella ciudad de Venecia ya hará el resto.
Los actores, aunque correctos, interpretan sus papeles en numerosas ocasiones de una forma un tanto teatral, un hecho éste bastante extraño para una producción germánica de bien entrados los años 20, recurriendo además Herr Felner a tópicos que ciertamente no benefician artísticamente al filme, como puede ser por ejemplo, el tratamiento que recibe la comunidad judía en el filme, excesivamente estereotipada y con un cierto poso de velada malicia, un asunto éste que en manos teutónicas resulta ser siempre bastante peligroso…
Por lo tanto y a pesar del interesante material original con el cual Herr Felner contaba, debido a su acomodaticia y desganada dirección, los momentos trágicos del filme resultan ser en numerosas ocasiones insubstanciales y los aspectos cómicos del mismo no acaban de funcionar del todo, teniendo como resultado final un anodino filme de época repleto éste de leotardos, pelucones y venecianos rincones.
Y ahora si me lo permiten, les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este conde germánico tiene que ejercer de gondolero para una de sus ricas herederas teutonas.
