As it is well-known among silent film connoisseurs, the fine Arts were an essential influence on silent films in general and Herr Maurice Tourneur’s work in particular. His beautiful oeuvres gave him fame and prestige around the world from his French period in the mid 10’s to his career in the USA.
“The Blue Bird” (1918) tells the story of two poor children, Mytyl and Tyltyl, who are led by the fairy Berylune in the search, around a fantastic world, for the blue bird of happiness.
The film belongs to Herr Tourneur’s American silent film period, and in this movie it is possible to watch all his artistic virtues in full display. This early astounding production is striking even today for its great artistic merits. The film was based on a book written by the Belgian poet Herr Maurice Maeterlinck and maybe Herr Tourneur during his young days could have illustrated it due to his earlier career as a book illustrator or… MEIN GOTT!!! Perhaps he even read it! In any case, Herr Tourneur adapted and transferred the fairy tale story to the silent screen in a superb way.
The film exudes classicism and even romanticism, artistic subjects that Herr Tourneur know very well how to employ in the world of fantasy. There is amazing art direction, elaborate decors and costumes and witty technical effects, not to mention the inventiveness that can be seen in every shot of the film and in the beautiful, exemplary photography of Herr John van den Broek and Lucien Andriot that captures the atmosphere of the classical fairy books through a cinema lens in a masterly way.
Probably the story can be considered as affected, even innocent in this modern time but even that has a special value in artistic terms for this film; that baroque taste and out of date atmosphere fit perfectly in the story that moves from the real to the dream world, from the real to the unreal. Herr Tourneur’s interpretation of this fantastic universe is a prodigious work, imaginative and inventive and shining with brilliant artistic merits.

Como bien saben los “connoisseurs” del cinema silente, las bellas Artes fueron determinantes, influyeron notoriamente en el cine mudo y en particular en la obra de Herr Maurice Tourneur, bellas películas que le dieron fama y prestigio en el mundo entero, una obra que se inicia en Francia a mediados de la década de los años 10 del siglo pasado y que posteriormente continuaría en Amerika.
“The Blue Bird” (1918) narra la historia de dos niños pobres, Mytyl y Tyltyl, que son guiados por el hada Berylune en la búsqueda, a través de un mundo fantástico, de un pájaro que da la felicidad.
El filme pertenece a la etapa americana silente de Herr Tourneur y en dicha obra se pueden ver todas las virtudes artísticas y más características de la obra del director galo, en todo su esplendor; un filme sorprendente de su primera época y que todavía hoy en día sorprende por sus grandes logros artísticos.
El filme está basado en una obra escrita por el poeta belga Herr Maurice Maeterlinck y quizás Herr Tourneur durante sus días mozos tuvo la oportunidad de ilustrar dicha obra debido a su primeriza carrera como ilustrador además de que… MEIN GOTT!!!... ¡también lo pudo haber leído!... en cualquier caso, Herr Tourneur adaptó y trasladó a la pantalla silente y de forma realmente magnífica, ese cuento de hadas.
El filme exuda clasicismo e incluso cierto romanticismo, conceptos artísticos que Herr Tourneur sabe muy bien cómo utilizar en su particular mundo fantástico, un filme que posee una sorprendente dirección artística, elaborados decorados y vestuario, además de unos ingeniosos efectos especiales, sin olvidarse igualmente de la gran inventiva que impregna cada plano del filme, con una ejemplar fotografía a cargo de Herr John van den Broek y Lucien Andriot, capturando, de forma ciertamente magistral, la atmósfera de los clásicos libros de cuentos de hadas, a través del objetivo cinematográfico.
Probablemente la historia del filme pueda ser considerada como manida, incluso inocente en estos tiempos modernos pero incluso ello tiene un especial importancia en cuanto a valores artísticos en el filme, un aire barroco y un anticuado ambiente que encaja perfectamente en una historia que se mueve entre el mundo real y el mundo de los sueños, un viaje desde la realidad a un mundo de fantasía.
La interpretación que hace Herr Tourneur de ese fantástico universo es todo un prodigio, un trabajo repleto de imaginación e inventiva además de poseer brillantes méritos artísticos.
Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este conde germánico tiene que escuchar el grácil graznido de los cuervos del Schloss.

I don't know much about French silent films, thus thanks to your post, I can look into it! The way you describe it, it sounds like a cinematic masterpiece, and I'm looking forward to seeing this (since it's available on DVD in America, yippee!)

La variante cuentos de hadas en este período es siempre gratificante, ahí está Dornroschen; también en este caso, impregnado del simbolismo de Herr Maeterlinck, un hombre capaz de extraer una visión completa del universo a través del estudio de la vida de las termitas...

Pues sépase que éste Herr Graf fue uno de los implicados en difundir entre los melenudos ese desconocido y más que destacable filme de Herr Paul, aunque lógicamente usted, debido a su avanzada edad, pudo ya disfrutarlo cuando su estreno oficial...

Siguiendo sus indicaciones y tras un accidentado estreno silente dominical durante el fin de semana pasado en el Schloss y en el cual se proyectó un filme incompleto( hecho éste que será reparado en breve ), optóse entonces por seguir sus melenudas indicaciones y rescatóse del archivo aristocrático "Lorna Doone" de Herr Tourneur para así seguir con el mini-ciclo dedicado al director francés, evento del cual tendrá noticias aristocráticas éste mismo fin de semana.
