“Sangen Om Den Eldröda Blomman” ( “Song Of The Scarlet Flower” ) was a recent and remarkable silent surprise for this Herr Von; the oeuvre is an excellent Herr Stiller silent film that this German count watched in a newly restored and tinted copy. It combines the well-known aesthetics, technical improvements and artistic merits for which the Nordic director was known and praised since those early silent times till today.
The film tells of the merry and carefree love life of young Olof ( Herr Lars Hanson ) a woodsman who during his search for true love, seduces many fauleins ( just like this German aristocrat… well, not exactly because the purpose of this Herr Von’s seduction of rich fräulein heiresses are their great fortunes… ). He will suffer disappointment and deception, all those problems that turn up in any loving relationship. Finally he will find responsibility and maturity, learning during his particular quest that his actions always have consequences in different degrees to the people around him. This Herr Von can describe “Sangen Om…” as a kind of coming of age film, the special introspective growth toward maturity of a free and easy youngster.
As this German count said before, the film displays Stiller’s characteristic artistic virtues. ; in the first part of the film, we can see elements of comedy, not exactly like the comedy of intrigues in other Stiller films, but humor of a more cheerful sort, highlighting the self-involvement of our hero. Olof ‘s frivolous flirtations with the different girls eventually turn romantic and then turn into drama. There is conflict in the troubled relationship between Olof and his father and later with the father of his beloved. The beautiful and wild natural landscapes of Norrland and northern Sweden lend the tale a certain power and is characteristic of Herr Stiller’s other silents where Nature emerges as an important character in the story. This is strongly reflected throughout the film but especially during the frantic scene wherein Olof descends into the troubled waters of a river, a beautiful metaphor for the hardships that our hero has to endure until he finds himself.
“Sangen Om Den Eldröda Blomman” is an excellent, beautiful film, a solid, technically perfect and intricate production of 1919 that demonstrates once again the importance of Herr Stiller for silent film history.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must return to Teutonic nature.

Contemplar el filme “Sangen Om Den Eldröda Blomman” ha sido toda una destacable y reciente sorpresa silente para éste Herr Von; se trata de un excelente filme de Herr Mauritz Stiller que éste conde germánico ha podido ver en una recientemente restaurada y tintada copia.
El filme aúna la estética, los avances técnicos y méritos artísticos por los cuales el director nórdico ha sido bien reconocido y apreciado desde esos lejanos días silentes hasta éstos tiempos modernos.
El filme narra la despreocupada y alegre vida amorosa del joven leñador Olof ( Herr Lars Hanson ) y su particular búsqueda de un amor verdadero; Olof seduce a numerosas frauleins ( lo mismo que le acontece a éste aristócrata, aunque no exactamente, ciertamente…, pues el propósito final de éste Herr Von y sus flirteos con las frauleins, son sus grandes fortunas… ) sufriendo nuestro héroe numerosas decepciones y desilusiones, esto es, todos esos problemas que van apareciendo en cualquier relación amorosa, para finalmente encontrar madurez y responsabilidad, aprendiendo durante su particular búsqueda que sus acciones afectarán, producirán diferentes consecuencias en las personas que le rodean.
Una obra, “Sangen Om…” que éste Herr Graf calificaría como una especie de filme iniciático, una obra introspectiva, sobre el crecimiento, la madurez de un joven, otrora, despreocupado.
Como éste conde germánico ha comentado recientemente, el filme muestra todas las virtudes y características de los filmes de Herr Stiller; durante la primera parte se pueden encontrar elementos de comedia en la misma, no estamos exactamente ante una comedia de enredo del director nórdico, más bien un humor sutil para así enfatizar la despreocupación de nuestro héroe.
Los frívolos flirteos de Olof con diferentes jóvenes irán variando de un cierto romanticismo inicial a elementos mucho más dramáticos, tal y como acontece en la tormentosa relación de Olof con su padre y posteriormente con el padre de su amada, todo ello filmado en los parajes naturales y agrestes de Norrland, al norte de Suecia, otro elemento característico éste de los filmes de Herr Stiller, la naturaleza como un importante y poderoso elemento en la trama de sus obras, como se puede comprobar especialmente en la frenética secuencia del descenso de Olor por las aguas turbulentas de un río, una bella metáfora de las dificultades que nuestro héroe tendrá que superar para finalmente encontrar su lugar.
“Sangen Om Den Eldröda Blomman” es un hermoso filme, una obra sólida y técnicamente perfecta, toda una elaborada producción silente del año 1919 en donde se aprecia y se demuestra una vez más la importancia de Herr Stiller en la historia silente mundial.
Y ahora si me lo permiten, les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este conde germánico tiene que volver a su estado natural.
