Frau Helene Netzler ( Frau Asta Nielsen ) is the owner of the copper mine “Glückauf”, a mine that is nearly depleted and this threatens her financial situation. Fortunately the director of the copper mine, Herr Lindholm ( Herr Aruth Wartan ) has good news for Frau Helene: he has found a new copper vein that promises great supply. With this in mind, Frau Helene orders that all the shares of the copper mine, that for many days inflated the stock market, be bought up. At the same time, as a token of her gratitude, Frau Helene promotes Herr Lindholm to partner of the copper mine. Frau Helene’s new partner is interested in Frau Lina, Frau Helene’s cousin, a poor girl who lives at the mansion as a lady companion. To complicate matters, Frau Helene is also in love with Herr Lindholm.
Die Börsenkönigin” ( The Queen Of The Stock-Exchange ), directed by the unknown Herr Edmund Edel in the silent year of 1918, is a very suitable oeuvre for these days in which the world stock market and global financial crisis are much in the news. Speculators, brokers, greedy share-holders and other strange specimens did their work in the silent days as well, making a good living for themselves but leaving the commoners behind.
Our heroine, Frau Helene Netzler knows that in order to maintain her life of luxury she must keep the level of production of her cooper mine very high. The new vein gives her the opportunity to speculate in the stock-market and increase her wealth; that’s the way the bourgeoisie make a lot of money. Of course these games are only possible thanks to the efforts, sweat and hard work of their employees.
This makes for some interesting social and historical themes in the film and they are brought out in an almost documentary way given that real copper mine workers appear as extras in some of the scenes ( it is not necessary to say that they didn’t receive extra wages for their extra work ) . These poor men and women worked hard in terrible and unsafe conditions in contrast to the luxury and comfort enjoyed by their masters who live in wonderful mansions surrounded by magnificent gardens and having at their command businessmen in tuxedos and top hats, reflecting in this way the contradictions of a Germany defeated in the Great War.
As the Teutonic saying goes, “Don’t mix pleasure with business”, and Frau Helene unwisely ignores this wisdom and shares her heart as well as her mine with Herr Lindholm. It will take a divine intervention to set things right and cause Frau Helene to recover her cold and Germanic senses ( essential for a Teutonic businesswoman).
Frau Asta Nielsen plays properly her character in a film where business is business and the matters of the heart are simple accidents that can be put aside and forgotten easily if luxury and power are at stake. Of course in this modernen world the upper classes will likewise never be at risk as long is there are financial subterfuges and the working classes to foot the bills.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must convince his rich heiresses that Herr Graff is a good investment.

Frau Helene Netzler ( Frau Asta Nielsen ) es la propietaria de la mina de cobre “Glückauf”, una mina que está agotando sus recursos, un hecho éste que pondría en grave peligro la cómoda situación financiera de nuestra protagonista; afortunadamente el director de la mina, Herr Lindholm ( Herr Aruth Wartan ) tiene buenas noticias para Frau Helene y le comunica que ha descubierto un importante y nuevo filón de cobre en la mina, garantizando así la producción de la misma.
Al tener conocimiento de tan excelentes noticias, Frau Helene ordena que todas las acciones de su mina y que durante varias jornadas se habían devaluado considerablemente, sean compradas, nombrando además Frau Helene y como señal de agradecimiento, a Herr Lindholm como socio en su empresa minera.
Para complicar las cosas, Frau Helene se enamora de Herr Lindholm, desconociendo ésta que el susodicho muestra cierto interés por Frau Lina, una joven de escasos recursos y prima de nuestra protagonista, la cuala vive en la mansión de Frau Helene como su dama de compañía.
“Die Börsenkönigin”, filme dirigido por el desconocido Herr Edmund Edel en el año silente de 1918, es ciertamente una película muy apropiada para éstos días en los cuales el mercado bursátil y la crisis financiera mundial están de plena actualidad, pudiendo comprobar como los especuladores, “brokers”, avariciosos accionistas y otros extraños especimenes ya hacían por entonces su particulares negocios en la Bolsa, siendo los únicos beneficiarios de un mercado que se olvida fácilmente de las clases bajas.
Nuestra heroína, Frau Helene Netzler sabe muy bien que para continuar con su vida de gran lujo, debe mantener el nivel de producción de su mina de cobre y cuando una nueva veta es descubierta, le ofrece entonces la oportunidad de especular con las acciones de su propia empresa en la Bolsa y así incrementar su fortuna.
Este es un procedimiento habitual de la burguesía para enriquecerse y todo ello gracias al esfuerzo, sudor y duro trabajo de la plebe.
A destacar en el filme ciertos aspectos sociales e históricos, mostrando de una forma casi documental, imágenes reales en las cuales se incluyen en éstas a mineros auténticos como figurantes ( huelga decir que dichos trabajadores no recibieron unos céntimos de más por su trabajo extra ), sufridos hombres y mujeres que trabajaban en muy difíciles e insalubres condiciones, nada que ver con el lujo y el confort que disfrutaban sus superiores los cuales vivían, tal y como se aprecia en el filme, en maravillosas mansiones rodeadas éstas de magníficos jardines frecuentados éstos por hombres de negocios vestidos de frac y con sombrero de copa, reflejando así el filme ciertas contradicciones de una Germania que recientemente había sido derrotada en la I Guerra Mundial.
Como dice un refrán teutón: “Donde Tenga La Olla No Entrometa Usted Su Miembro Viril”, pero parece ser que Frau Helene desgraciadamente ignoraba la sabiduría de sus ancestros, al compartir, además de la mina, su corazón con Herr Lindhom; afortunadamente y gracias a una intervención divina, el sentido común finalmente prevalecerá y Frau Helene recuperará su frío y germánico juicio ( esencial para una mujer de negocios teutónica que se precie ).
Frau Asta Nielsen interpreta muy correctamente su personaje en un filme en donde los negocios son los negocios y los asuntos del corazón un simple accidente que hay que tratar de evitar y olvidar si el poder y el lujo se encuentran amenazados, pues las clases altas deben siempre mantener su patrimonio intacto gracias a subterfugios financieros y que sea finalmente la clase trabajadora la que al final pague el pato.
Y ahora si me lo permiten, les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este conde germánico tiene que convencer a sus ricas herederas de que su Herr Graf es una buena inversión.
