"L'Illustre Attrice Cicala Formica" (1920) By Lucio D'Ambra

To laugh at oneself is good -and cheap- therapy.  To make light of some customs and clichés that we believe are important is an excellent exercise in not taking things too seriously and it is healthy to laugh out loud at familiar and supposedly significant subjects. For example, this Herr Graf often chuckles at the lower classes and their trifles…

The short film “L’Illustre Attrice Cicala Formica” ( The Illustrious Actress Cicada Ant ), directed by Herr Lucio D’Ambra in the silent year of 1920, is a good illustration of what this Herr Graf is talking about.  In a mere 20 minutes, Herr D’Ambra satirizes two fundamental pillars of Italian silent pictures: divas and epic films!... MEIN GOTT!.
Not only that but the film calls into question and irreverently caricatures another important Italian institution: the family!!... MEIN GOTT!!,

The film tells in a humorous way of the artistic aspirations of  a young and bourgeoisie fraulein who wants to become a famous actress, the most important diva of all times, although her family , especially her father, are unhappy with her artistic dreams.
But thanks to her tenacity, as well as the collaboration of some servants and members of her family (they help her rehearse her roles which are taken from Roman Empire times), the young fraulein finally gets to star in a film.  

But the premiere will be a disaster because due to the inexperience of the projectionist, the actors in the picture are all rapidly moving backwards, causing   general laughter in the audience and spelling the end of the glorious but brief cinematic career of our heroine.

Besides the ironic point of view towards epic films, silent divas and the Italian family, the film includes interesting sequences wherein we see the inner workings as well as the implicit magic of making movies.  The illustrious actress Cicada has an obsession with the camera, a modern illness caused by this invention and which continues to do its damage even today throughout the world.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count wants to become a big aristocratic star.

Reírse de uno mismo es ciertamente una buena y barata terapia que ayuda a restar importancia a ciertas costumbres y tópicos considerados demasiado importantes por los interfectos, por lo tanto es más que aconsejable practicar dicho ejercicio de vez en cuando para evitar tomarse las cosas demasiado en serio y así poder reírse a carcajadas de esas supuestas relevantes costumbres familiares, tal y como habitualmente hace éste Herr Graf al reírse de las naderías que sufren las clases bajas…

El cortometraje “L’Illustre Attrice Cicala Formica”, filme dirigido por Herr Luci D’Ambra en el año silente de 1920, es ciertamente un buen ejemplo de lo que éste Herr Graf ha mencionado hace un momento.

En solamente 20 minutos, Herr D’Ambra se mofa, nada más y nada menos, que de los dos pilares fundamentales del cinema italiano silente: las divas y los filmes épicos… ¡MEIN GOTT!.

Además, la película de Herr D’Ambra también cuestiona otra importante institución italiana… ¡la familia!... ¡MEIN GOTT!!!, la cuala es caricaturizada de forma irreverente en el filme.

La película narra de forma jocosa, las aspiraciones artísticas que tiene una joven burguesa la cuala sueña con ser una importante y famosa actriz, esto es, la más importante diva de la pantalla silente, aunque en su propia familia muchos de ellos no comparten con ella dichas aspiraciones artísticas, especialmente su padre…

Pero gracias a su tenacidad, además de la colaboración de la servidumbre y algunos miembros de su familia los cuales ensayan con la aspirante a actriz, importante figuras de la antigua Roma imperial, finalmente nuestra heroína conseguirá ser la protagonista de un filme silente.

Pero durante el estreno del mismo, un desastre acontecerá debido a la inexperiencia del proyeccionista, al exhibir éste el filme de forma incorrecta, esto es, de adelante hacia atrás, provocando así la risa entre el público asistente a dicho estreno y consecuentemente, el fin de la gloriosa y breve carrera de nuestra protagonista.

Además del irónico punto de vista que se puede apreciar en el filme sobre los filmes épicos, las divas silentes y la familia italiana,  la película también incluye interesantes secuencias en donde los pioneros del cinema silente se homenajean a si mismos, o lo que es lo mismo, el cine dentro del cine, mostrando los entresijos y la magia implícita en el arte de hacer filmes silentes durante aquellos maravillosos años, provocándole tan novedosa experiencia a Frau Cicada Formica, una terrible obsesión por el cinematógrafo, una enfermedad modernista ésta que todavía hoy en día se sigue sufriendo en el mundo entero.

Y ahora, si me lo permiten, les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este conde germánico tiene la intención de convertirse en toda una celebridad aristocrática.
