Frau Cainá is a young peasant who lives in a small
village in Sardinia together with her goats and parents. She is a wild
and free spirit and unconventional for any small and closed communities
dominated by old rules.
Cainà yearns to escape from such a closed atmosphere and the isolated island, so, as an old tune says: “Somewhere beyond the sea, somewhere, waiting for me…”; When a boat arrives to the island, she will do her best to flee away from her little oppressing village and experience new adventures in the continent with the help of the boat captain.
“Cainà: La Figlia Dell’isola” (1922) was directed by Herr Gennaro Righelli. The film starred Frau Maria Jacobini who during these old days was romantically involved with the Italian director whom some years later she would marry.
Herr Righelli’s silent films are especially interesting for this Herr Graf for its unusual modernity and original artistic proposals. This time in “Cainà…” Herr Righelli directed a traditionalist film only in appearance. That’s because a core element of the picture is a disturbing drama settled in oldSardinia .
In addition to Herr Righelli’s always interesting film stories, they contain an evolved film narrative in which technical resources match the story perfectly.
For example, in the boat sequences there are striking overhead shots and others from different angles. Not to be forgotten also are the close-ups of the inhabitants of the small village and their ancient traditions and way of life. These are ethnographical images that reflect well the peculiar idiosyncrasies of the typical islander.
And last but not least, there are the ruggedSardinia landscapes which are an important and decisive main character itself. They
contrast with the sunny views of the continent that finally makes Frau Cainà
blind.
So in “Cainà…” Herr Righelli creates different layers and film styles in the same film: traditionalism, ethnography and drama.
These are diverse artistic achievements that the Italian director accomplishes thanks to his skilful use of the technique and film narrative. Everything is at the service of an obscure story in which nothing can be taken or granted.
We will discover that the small village is crowded with vengeful people, that the captain and the continent is not such a promising adventure. Thus, consequently, Frau Cainà's shattered dreams will end up in a tragedy, in theSardinia style natürlich!.

Cainà es una joven campesina la cuala vive en un pequeño pueblo de Cerdeña
junto a sus cabras y sus padres; la muchacha tiene un indomable espíritu libre,
nada convencional para una pequeña y cerrada comunidad en donde mandan las
viejas costumbres.
Cainà
ansía huir de la irrespirable atmósfera de la isla, así que, como dice una
vieja canción: “El vino en un barco, de nombre extranjero…”, en cuanto se
entera de la llegada de un navío a la isla, hará todo lo que esté en su alcance
para poder huir de su pequeño y opresivo pueblo y así poder vivir nuevas
aventuras en el continente contando para ello con la ayuda del capitán del
barco.
El
filme “Cainà; La Figlia Dell’isola” (1922) fue dirigido por Herr Gennaro
Righelli, una película protagonizada por Frau Maria Jacobini, la cuala durante
la realización del mismo mantenía una relación sentimental con el director
italiano, con el cual se casaría unos años más tarde.
Los
filmes silentes de Herr Righelli son especialmente interesantes para éste Herr
Graf por su inusual modernidad y originales propuestas artísticas.
En
esta ocasión, Herr Righelli dirige un filme costumbrista pero solamente en
apariencia, pues el elemento central del filme se sustenta en un inquietante
drama ambientado éste en la vieja Cerdeña.
Además
de las siempre interesantes historias que nos propone Herr Righelli, en sus
filmes también se puede apreciar una narrativa moderna en donde los recursos
técnicos encajan perfectamente con las necesidades de la historia del filme,
tal y como se puede apreciar durante las secuencias que transcurren en el
barco, en donde se incluyen planos cenitales y otros desde diferentes ángulos,
o los primeros planos de los habitantes del pueblo, sus viejas tradiciones y
forma de vida, un peculiar elemento etnográfico éste que refleja la particular
idiosincrasia de cualquier isleño, sin olvidarse igualmente de los agrestes
paisajes de Cerdeña, un importante y decisivo personaje en si mismo dentro del
filme, en contraste éste con las soleadas vistas del continente que ciegan a
Frau Cainà.

Righelli crea en el mismo filme diferentes capas para diferentes estilos
cinematográficos, costumbrismo, etnografía y drama, diversas propuestas
artísticas que se combinan adecuadamente gracias a la habilidad del director
italiano y el buen empleo que hace éste de la técnica y del lenguaje
cinematográfico, todo ello al servicio de una historia oscura en donde nada se
da por supuesto y así descubriremos que el pequeño pueblo de Frau Cainà está
repleto de gente vengativa, que el capitán del barco y el continente finalmente
no resulta ser una prometedora aventura y como los sueños de Frau Cainà se
hacen añicos acabando todo ello en una tragedia al más puro estilo de Cerdeña.
Y
ahora si me lo permiten, les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este conde
germánico tiene que aislarse del mundo aristocrático en su isla privada.
