"Vier Um Die Frau" (1921) By Fritz Lang

The merchant Yquem buys his dear wife a beautiful jewel with matching earnings in a place where the city’s underworld trades in fake and stolen jewelry. By chance, Yquem spots a man with whom his wife had an affair in the past. Yquem follows him to a hotel where he will write him a letter imitating his wife’s hand writing. The letter invites the man to a public place where Yquem can spy on them and try to discover whether there is still something between them.

This early Fritz Lang film, “Vier Um Die Frau” (Four Around a Woman) was found by chance some years ago at the “Cinemateca De Sâo Paulo”, a great present for the German aristocracy and even for the longhaired moviegoers, because it prefigures much of "Dr. Mabuse", (corruption in the upper class-a very habitual practice-unscrupulous upstarts, blackmail, low class criminals, social tension.) and in the opinion of this German aristocrat, provides one of the most outstanding titles of Lang's first period.
This film has excellent editing that gives vigour, speed and emotion to a story of an underworld rife with treachery and betrayal as well as a complex tale of unrequited love. The film builds to a crescendo of narrative strength that reminds one of episodes of "Die Spinnen" made by Herr Lang a year before.

The acting is exceptional and the performers resist the temptation to overacting that might be expected in such melodrama. As the heroine, Carola Toelle is especially good and admirably conveys the doubts, secret desires and frustration that her character suffers. An excellent counterpoint is provided the character of her friend and confidant, a perfect vamp, who provides bad advice and is without scruples, quick to use flirting to build up her social position...
Rudolf Klein-Rogge has to be mentioned, as his performance makes one recall the exceptional character Dr Mabuse, that he will immortalise two years later. The excellent main actors are given equally good support in the minor roles.

It is worth mentioning as well the great photography of Otto Kanturek and the film production by Ernst Meiwers and Hans Jacoby. The importance of "Decla-Bioscop"’can be seen in the first rate production values that are so abundant in the film (great manors, hotel lobbies, the stock exchange, etc) and on the other hand the realistic depiction of less auspicious surroundings: ragged and wretched slums streets filled with the kind of characters you might expect in such places. A minor point but also a real curiosity is the inclusion of a poster for another "Decla Bioscop" production that can be glimpsed in a theater lobby.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count is realizing how in tonight’s soirée's there are four aristocrats around a fat German heiress with almost the same perverse intentions of those of this Herr Graf towards her.

El comerciante Yyquem le compra a su querida esposa una preciosa pieza de joyería conseguida con dinero sucio, en un local en donde el hampa de la ciudad trafica con joyas falsificadas. Será en ese lugar en done Yquem encontrará casualmente a una persona con la cual su esposa tuvo un "affair" en el pasado; al conocerlo, lo sigue hasta un hotel en donde le escribirá un carta falsificando la letra de su mujer, para así citarlo en un lugar que no levante sospechas y pueda finalmente conocer qué clase de relación mantuvo con su mujer.

Este primerizo filme de Herr Lang, “Vier Um Die Frau”, fue encontrado milagrosamente hace unos años en la “Cinemateca De Sâo Paulo” un auténtico regalo para la aristocracia germánica e incluso para melenudos cinéfilos, pues se trata de un magnífico precedente de "Dr. Mabuse", ( corrupción entre las clases altas ( costumbres éstas muy habituales ) advenedizos sin escrúpulos, chantajes, clases pobres desfavorecidas y vengativas... ) y en opinión de éste aristócrata germánico, uno de los títulos más destacados de la primera etapa del director alemán, al poseer el filme un montaje excelente que da vigor, rapidez y emoción a una historia de falsificadores, ( hampa variada y difusa ) engaños y amores no correspondidos, que se va desarrollando y exponiendo "in crescendo", con un vigor narrativo que seguramente se vio favorecido por el filme de episodios "Die Spinnen" realizado por Herr Lang un año antes.

Las interpretaciones de sus actores son excepcionales, sin dar prácticamente oportunidad a la sobreactuación, con una Carola Trölle como heroína "upper-class" que consigue transmitirnos las dudas, deseos ocultos y la frustración que padece su personaje de una forma realmente admirable, magnífico contrapunto al personaje de su amiga y confidente, una perfecta "vamp", malvada, mala consejera y sin escrúpulos que no piensa perder el tiempo aprovechando al máximo todas las oportunidades que el "flirteo" le da su aventajada posición y vida social. Mencionar también a Rudolf Klein-Rogge en un papel que nos trae recuerdos a su excepcional personaje del Dr. Mabuse que inmortalizaría dos años más tarde… en definitiva, unos actores principales excelentes, sin olvidarnos de los diversos personajes que deambulan por los diferentes escenarios del filme.

Hay que destacar también la excelente fotografía de Otto Kanturek y el diseño de producción del filme a cargo de Ernst Meiwers y Hans Jacoby, otro magnífico trabajo que revela la importancia y puntillismo que caracterizaban a las producciones de la "Decla-Bioscop" de dicha época ( por cierto hay que destacar un "guiño" publicitario en el mismo filme, pues en una de las calles que aparece más a menudo situada en los suburbios hay un cine de dicha firma... ) cuidando tanto los ambientes selectos que abundan en el filme ( grandes mansiones, vestíbulos de hoteles, la Bolsa ) como el ambiente más harapiento y desarrapado de los suburbios ( calles llenas de personajes muy bien caracterizados, tabernas, negocios dudosos... ) que da categoría y sobre todo verosimilitud a este excelente filme.

Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues éste Conde germánico está viendo como en la soirée de esta noche hay “four aristocrats around a fat German heiress” y casi con tan pérfidas intenciones como las de éste Herr Graf para con la susodicha.
