"The Student Prince In Old Heidelberg" (1927) By Ernst Lubitsch

From time to time and in order to remember older better times, it is good to watch again those films that the European aristocracy and especially this German count likes most. Such is the case with “The Student Prince In Old Heidelberg”, film directed by Herr Ernst Lubitsch during his Amerikan career.

And this German count especially likes this silent film not only because in the oeuvre can be seen Teutonic aristocrats and even crowned kings, not to mention stiff laws about etiquette, uniforms with plenty of medals, tradition, obligation and, last but not least, royal duties. Another reason is because the film has style and classic elegance, primal emotions in motion, beautiful scenery and almost real decors, an impossible but idealistic true love story and memorable and skilful direction. There are a lot of superb silent moments, as for example, the first and unseen kiss in the garden, the night meadow scene, each and every shot starring the heartbreaking Dame Norma Shearer and a charming Herr Ramon Novarro. Besides those indispensable and unforgettable supporting silent actors, there is finally a magnificent, cruel, real and sorrowful ending.

“The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg” is a film about youthful dreams, the first painful love and the greatness and illness of falling in love. It’s about the passing of time and those glorious memories of loves past that nobody can take away in spite, after all, of those unbearable and unjust social actions of people in high places against working class folk.

Obviously this German count is talking about a classical, universal, wonderful masterpiece, a joy to the eye of a serious Teutonic aristocrat.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must stop sighing along the Schloss corners.

De vez en cuando y con la excusa de recordar los viejos tiempos, siempre es más que recomendable revisitar esos filmes que la aristocracia europea y más especialmente, éste conde germánico, aprecian de forma notoria; tal es el caso de “The Student Prince In Old Heidelberg”, filme dirigido por Herr Ernst Lubitsch durante su etapa americana.

Y es que este conde germánico gusta especialmente de este filme silente no solamente porque en dicha obra se pueden ver aristócratas teutones e incluso príncipes herederos, además de rancias leyes sobre normas de etiqueta, uniformes repletos de medallas, tradiciones, obligaciones y, por último, deberes reales, si no porque el filme exuda gran estilo y clásica elegancia, emociones primarias en movimiento, maravillosos decorados e incluso casi reales decorados, una imposible e idealizada historia de amor, además de una ingeniosa dirección.
Posee el filme además gloriosos momentos silentes, como por ejemplo, el primer e invisible beso en el jardín de la pareja protagonista, la escena nocturna en el prado, o cada uno de los planos en los cuales aparecen una conmovedora Dame Norma Shearer y un encantador Herr Ramon Novarro, además de imprescindibles e inolvidables actores secundarios, finalizando todo ello con un magnífico, cruel, real y tristísimo final.

“The Student Prince In Old Heidelberg” es un filme acerca de los sueños de juventud, el primer y doloroso gran amor o la grandeza y el dolor de enamorarse; una obra acerca del paso del tiempo y sus gloriosos recuerdos que nadie podrá arrebatar, a pesar, incluso, de insoportables e injustas conductas entre gentes de clases elevadas en contra de paisanos proletarios.

Obviamente, este conde germánico está hablando de un filme clásico, universal, una maravillosa obra maestra, todo un placer visual para un serio aristócrata teutón.

Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este conde germánico tiene que dejar de suspirar por las esquinas del Schloss.
