Commoners are a very strange people for aristocrats, ja wohl! A good example of their strange conduct can be seen in the film “Värmlänningarna” directed by Herr Erik A. Petschler in the silent year of 1923.
The film tells the story of Herr Erik ( Herr Tor Weijden ), a Swedish youngster and the son of a wealthy farmer. He is in love with Frau Anna ( Frau Anna Q. Nilsson ) who is Swedish too but alas, poor. In order to make things worse, both youngsters’ families are enemies.
Erik’s father wants to marry him to another rich farmer girl of the town, Frau Britta. However, the lad incredibly persists in loving and marrying Frau Anna. The result is the exact strange commoner conduct that this Herr Graf can’t understand. Obviously aristocrats without a doubt will marry the rich girl and will keep at hand the poor one…
When Frau Anna knows the news about Erik’s engagement with Britta, she almost becomes insane. But fortunately and thanks to Erik unconditional love, both youngsters finally will marry and live happy together.
“Värmlänningarna” ( The People Of Värmland ) was based in a very popular Swedish play written by Herr Fredrik August Dahlgren. It was adapted many times for the cinema ( as silent and talkie ). The playwright set the love story of Herr Erik und Frau Anna in the beautiful province of Värmland, a historical province full of musical and cultural traditions. Herr Petschler in the adaptation to the silent screen, succeeds in transmitting the idyllic, bucolic and classical atmosphere in connection with the story of the film.
The picture starred the Swedish-Amerikan actress Frau Anna Q. Nilsson who at that time was a famous actress in Amerika. “Värmlänningarna” is a perfect and exclusive vehicle for her and certainly the character of Frau Anna shines specially in the film. Thus, Frau Nilsson achieves the mood in every scene; she is charming and gives dramatism when necessary as when she becomes insane over her lover’s is engagement to the rich girl.
As with the play, Värmland landscapes are beautifully photographed and are part of a film narrative that only Nordics can do. It is a folk film piece with a strong regional flavour in which drama and humour are equally used thus achieving a very interesting picture that’s solid and touching in spite of being a classic love story. The way Herr Petschler uses the Värmland folk traditions in a hyper realistic, literary and traditional way in the film narrative, achieves a positive result. Those old-time Värmland images are more interesting nowadays in what it is an effective, complementary and specially attractive artistic proposition.
The film was considered lost until a copy was found twenty years ago in Moscow, in the Russian Film Archive by some Swedish connoisseurs. The Swedish Film archive restored the film, removed the Russian intertitles and replaced them with Swedish ones. Included is music by Herr Per-Olov Davidsson who used themes and ideas from Herr Andreas Randelski’s original music. The film is available for any silent film fan from around the world to enjoy this beautiful and charming Swedish classical love story.

Los plebeyos son, ciertamente seres muy extraños para los aristócratas, ja wohl! y un ejemplo de sus extrañas conductas puede ser contemplado en el filme “Värmlänningarna”, dirigido éste por Herr Erik A. Petschler en el año silente de 1923.
El filme narra la historia de Herr Erik ( Herr Tor Weijden ), un jovenzuelo sueco, hijo de un rico granjero el cual se haya enamorado de Frau Anna ( Frau Anna Q. Nilsson ), sueca como él pero lamentablemente sin posibles; para complicar aún más las cosas, ambas dos familias de los jóvenes enamorados son enemigas entre sí.
El padre de Erik quiere que su hijo se case con una rica granjera del pueblo de nombre Frau Britta, pero el joven persiste en su amor por Anna, siendo ésta precisamente una de esas extrañas conductas típicas de los plebeyos mencionadas anteriormente y tan difíciles de comprender para éste Herr Graf, pues obviamente y sin pestañear, cualquier aristócrata que se precie se casaría con la rica granjera y seguiría teniendo a mano a la fraulein sin posibles…
Cuando Frau Anna sabe del compromiso de Erik con Britta, la joven casi pierde el juicio, aunque afortunadamente y gracias al amor incondicional que siente Erik por ella, ambos dos jóvenes finalmente contraerán matrimonio y vivirán felices para siempre.
El filme “Värmlänningarna” se basa en una popular obra sueca escrita por Herr Fredrik August Dahlgren, obra que fue adaptada en numerosas ocasiones tanto para la pantalla silente como la sonora, ambientado la historia de amor entre Herr Erik y Frau Anna en la bella provincia de Värmland, una provincia histórica sueca repleta ésta de tradiciones musicales y culturales, que Herr Petschler, en su adaptación para la pantalla silente, consigue con éxito transmitir el bucólico, idílico y clásico ambiente en el cual se sustenta la obra original.
La película fue protagonizada por la actriz sueco-americana Frau Anna Q. Nilsson, la cuala por entonces gozaba de una gran fama en Amerika, siendo “Värmlänningarna” el vehículo perfecto para su exclusivo lucimiento, pues ciertamente el personaje de Frau Anna brilla especialmente en el filme, impregnando Frau Nilsson a la heroína del filme en cada una de sus escenas, de un peculiar encanto, además de dramatismo cuando éste es necesario, tal y cómo sucede cuando conoce el compromiso de su novio con la rica granjera, llevándola a la locura.
Los paisajes de la provincia de Värmland, muy importantes en la historia del filme, son bellamente fotografiados y forman parte de la estructura narrativa de la película cómo habitualmente y solamente los nórdicos saben utilizar, en lo que es una pieza folklórica costumbrista en donde el drama y el humor se emplean de forma proporcional, consiguiendo su director una sólida y emotiva obra, que a pesar de tratarse ésta de una clásica historia de amor, la forma en la cual Herr Petschler muestra los hábitos de la región de Värmland ( hiperrealistas y tradicionales ) insertadas en la historia, hacen que ésas imágenes folklóricas repletas de una atmósfera añeja, tengan una valor añadido hoy en día, complementando de esta forma su particular proposición artística.
El filme se creyó perdido para siempre hasta que una copia fue encontrada hace veinte años en unos archivos cinematográficos moscovitas por unos “conneisseurs” suecos; la filmoteca sueca restauró el filme y suprimió los intertítulos rusos por otros suecos, añadiendo además la música de Herr Per-Olov Davidsson el cual empleó temas e ideas de la música original compuesta por Herr Andreas Randelski y en éstas condiciones está accesible el filme para cualquier entusiasta silente del mundo entero que desde luego disfrutará de ésta bella y encantadora clásica historia de amor sueca.
Y ahora si me lo permiten, les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este conde germánico tiene que viajar al histórico Länder de Baviera.

La historia es bastante básica y la he entendido a la perfección a pesar de tener sólo los subtítulos en sueco,nunca se echan tanto de menos unos subtítulos como cuando no los tienes,afortunadamente las películas silentes son lo suficientemente universales como para ser comprendidas por todo el mundo.
