"Chemi Bebia" (1929) ( Gradmother ) the first film directed by Herr Kote Miqaberidze, a Georgian, not Russian film director, was one of the most bizarre and unclassifiable silent films ever shown in the humid and dark Schloss theatre during the last Germanic times.
First of all, the most astounding aspect of Chemi Bebia ( the title of the film, grandmother has some subtle references) is that in the U.S.S.R. those Bolsheviks had capitalist customs that mimic the aristocratic habits of centuries. The main character of the film, a factory head, is fired due to his incompetence and laziness. The film becomes a satire of bureaucracy and by extension even a critique of some aspects of the Russian system. The film even ends with proclamations like “Death to the bureaucrats!” and “Death to Red Tape”. The film is so bold that it was banned by the soviet regime for nearly fifty years.
But that’s not all ( for this German count that was more than enough ) because another astounding aspect of this excellent film is its audacity and eccentricity. Besides those political transgressions, we get a mixture of the most varied film techniques skilfully used: stop-motion, puppetry and classic animation done in a remarkable style and all enveloped in an anarchist atmosphere. This fascinating and surprising oeuvre is a unique example of how to blend avant-garde, social comedy and the newest techniques successfully and in an original, unclassifiable way. And all this was made in the U.S.R.R. … MEIN GOTT!!.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must go ask his grandmother when finally will inherit her fortune.

"Chemi Bebia" (1929) primer filme dirigido por el georgiano que no ruso, Herr Kote Miqaberidze, ha sido uno de los más raros e inclasificables filmes exhibidos durante mucho tiempo entre las paredes húmedas y tétricas de la sala de proyecciones del Schloss.
Ante todo, el más sorprendente aspecto de “Chemi Bebia” ( el título del filme hace referencia a lo útil que siempre resultar tener padrinos… ) es el constatar que incluso en la U.R.S.S. esos bolcheviques tenían costumbres capitalistas que imitaban hábitos habituales de la aristocracia germánica desde tiempos inmemoriales.
El principal protagonista del filme, el director de una fábrica, es despedido por su incompetencia y holgazanería, convirtiéndose el filme en una sátira sobre la burocracia y por extensión incluso una cierta crítica hacia ciertos aspectos del sistema soviético, es más, el filme finaliza con proclamas tales como “¡Muerte a los burócratas!, “Muerte a los trámites, al papeleo!, por lo que tanto atrevimiento tuvo como resultado que esta obra estuviese prohibida por el régimen soviético durante casi más de cincuenta años.
Pero eso no es todo ( que para éste Conde germánico sería ya más que suficiente ) pues otro sorprendente aspecto de esta excelente obra es su audacia y excentricidad pues además de esas transgresiones políticas mencionadas anteriormente, el filme contiene una mezcla de los más variados trucos técnicos usados éstos de forma habilísima: “stop-motion”, marionetas y animación clásica se entremezclan de forma sorprendente y original manteniendo la obra una cierta atmósfera anarquista.
Este fascinante y sorprendente filme es por lo tanto un ejemplo único de cómo entremezclar de forma exitosa, vanguardia, comedia social y las más rabiosas técnicas cinematográficas de una forma inclasificable, original y todo ello realizado en la antigua U.R.S.S. … MEIN GOTT!!!.
Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este Conde germánico tiene que preguntarle a su padrino para cuando heredará su fortuna.
