"The Sky Pilot" (1921) By King Vidor

When this German Count cosily prepared himself in the darkness of the Schloss private cinema to watch “The Sky Pilot”, a film directed by Herr King Vidor, he thought that it was a film about Zeppelins or the adventures of the Red Baron. But nothing of that sort happens in the film; in Amerika, a very strange place, the inhabitants mean “preacher” when they talk about heavenly pilots.

On the contrary, the film depicts and shows more bizarre characteristics of that far away land when the main character of the film, a preacher, arrives at a small town, crowded with heathens who still don’t hesitate to transform the saloon into a church. But it causes a tremendous fuss when he spreads God’s word with fists…so, that’s the Amerikan interpretation of trust in God but keep your powder dry??...

After such a shocking and strange religious practice and due that a minister of God must not behave in this way, he is expelled from town. Afterwards he and his rival, the one who “discussed” with him the sermon in the saloon, reconcile. As part of the peace, the preacher is offered a job in the ranch as a foreman. So now on the preacher has to deal with cows and other beasts, so… that’s the Amerikan interpretation of the God’s herds??...

Fortunately there are some similarities between Amerika and Europe depicted in the film because we can see an evil, treacherous Duke. So it seems that the aristocracy had common features in the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

“The Sky Pilot” it is a film that belongs to the transitional period of Herr King Vidor’s career, a very important film director who will direct beautiful and moving masterpieces that will astonish future longhaired generations.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count has an appointment with Herr Manfred von Richthofen, a genuine sky pilot.

Cuando éste Conde germánico se acomodó confortablemente en la penumbra de la sala de proyecciones privadas del Schloss para ver “The Sky Pilot”, filme dirigido por Herr King Vidor, creyóse que se trataba de un filme acerca de Zeppelines o sobre las aventuras del Barón Rojo… pero nada de ello acontece en dicho filme pues en Amerika, ese extraño lugar, los lugareños del lugar se refieren a “predicadores” cuando nombran a los pilotos celestiales a los cuales hace referencia el título original del filme.

Muy al contrario, el filme narra y muestra las extrañas costumbres de esa lejana tierra, acerca de su protagonista, un predicador, que llega a un pequeño pueblo infestado de ateos que no dudarán en transformar el “saloon” de la localidad en una iglesia; en tan peculiar lugar, el predicador causará un tremendo alboroto cuando se dispone a difundir la palabra del Señor… a puñetazos… ¿acaso es esta la interpretación americana del dicho germánico de “a Dios rogando y con el mazo dando”?...

Tras tan extraña y sorprendente práctica religiosa y debido a que un ministro del Señor no debe comportarse de tal forma, éste es expulsado del pueblo; más tarde el predicador y su rival, la persona con la cual “discutió” el sermón del “saloon”, se reconcilian; como muestra de buena voluntad, al predicador le es ofrecido un puesto en el rancho en el cual trabaja su nuevo amigo como capataz, por lo que a partir de ahora el predicador tendrá que vérselas con vacas y otras bestias… ¿acaso es esta la interpretación en Amerika de los “rebaños del Señor”?...

Afortunadamente sí se aprecian algunas similitudes en el filme entre Amerika y Europa pues en dicha obra se puede ver a un malvado y traicionero duque ( Duke ) por lo que se constata que la aristocracia mantiene ciertos rasgos comunes a ambos lados del océano Atlántico.

“The Sky Pilot” es un filme que pertenece al periodo de transición de la carrera de Herr King Vidor, un importante director que realizaría bellísimas y emotivas obras maestras para el asombro de futuras y melenudas generaciones.

Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este Conde germánico tiene una cita con Herr Manfred von Richthofen, un auténtico piloto aéreo.
