The miner’s daughter Maria is pregnant, left by the children’s father and driven away by her own father from the house…those are many disgraces even for a tough German girl…
The pitman Thomas accept her and the baby and marries Mary but the seducer Georg, the father of Maria’s children, emerges from the Teutonic shadows and ensnares Maria again. There will come a confrontation between these men. Thomas will hunt down Georg into the mine depths and it will be there, due to a methane explosion, that Thomas, Georg and Maria will be buried alive.
“Schlagende Wetter” ( Trapped In The Mine ) was directed by Herr Karl Grune before his masterpiece “Die Strasse” (1923) and it was an excellent advance of the ( post ) Expressionist characteristics shown in the former film. However, in “Schlagende Wetter” there is room for two different genre film concepts: “Naturalism”, depicting the daily life and surroundings of the miners ( the film was set in the Rühr area ) and the aforementioned “Expressionism”, with its settings and art design, remarkably oppressive mine scenes of a hazardous life ( dark, hopeless ) and the conflicts that live in the main characters of the film.
Only one print survived in Italian and it is lacking one whole reel ( the second of five parts ). But, in spite such mutilation, the film can be enjoyed. Herr Karl Grune’s mastery at depicting tormented souls that finally find their own particular atonement is to be appreciated.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must order their servants to continue to mine for gold in the Schloss deposits.

El minero Thomas se casará con María aceptando igualmente a su bebé, pero el seductor Georg, padre del hijo de María, emerge desde las sombras teutónicas para embaucar de nuevo a María; por dicho motivo habrá un enfrentamiento entre ambos dos hombres y Thomas perseguirá hasta las mismísimas profundidades mineras a George, siendo allí y debido a una explosión de metano, en donde Thomas, George y María quedarán sepultados vivos.
“Schlagende Wetter” es un filme que fue dirigido por Herr Kart Grune antes de su obra maestra “Die Strasse” (1923), siendo un magnífico avance de las características (post ) Expresionistas mostradas en el último filme mencionado; de todas formas en “Schlagende Wetter” hay espacio para dos diferentes conceptos y géneros cinematográficos: el “naturalismo”, sobre todo a la hora de retratar la vida diaria y contornos mineros ( el filme fue rodado en la zona minera del Rühr ) y el anteriormente mencionado “expresionismo” , gracias a los decorados y la dirección artística de la obra, memorables y opresivas escenas de una vida llena de sufrimientos ( oscura, desesperanzada ) además de los conflictos que viven los principales personajes del filme.
Solamente una copia, con la falta de una bobina completa ( la segunda de cinco partes ) y con rótulos en italiano, ha sobrevivido hasta nuestros días, pero a pesar de tal mutilación, el filme puede ser igualmente disfrutado gracias a la maestría de Herr Karl Grune a la hora de reflejar esas almas atormentadas que finalmente encontrarán su particular expiación.
Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este Conde germánico tiene que ordenar a sus sirvientes que continúen extrayendo oro de los yacimientos del Schloss.
