“The Cossacks”is a film directed by Herr George W. Hill based on the eponymous Tolstoy novel. It deals with a people of rather primal instincts (the Cossacks were, of sorts, the Russian communist’s ancestors). They only think to fight and to kill Turks and the more the merrier. In their scarce free time they like, in order of preference, to drink vodka, eat their Cossack meals, shout loudly (thanks Gott this is a silent film… ) and to fight amongst themselves ( in order to be fit ). In this case, as depicted in the film, they have a special fondness of mocking Lukashka (Herr John Gilbert ), son of Ivan, chief of the tribe (Herr Ernest Torrence ) because he doesn’t want… to fight!.
Having no will to fight for a Cossack is an extraordinary thing. Insulting names are hurled daily at Lukashka such as “the woman man”, “flower picker” or the most terrible of all, “fine book learned guy”!!! .... to be a learned and cowardly Cossack… what a disgrace!.
His fiancé, Maryana ( Damen Renée Adorée ) feels basically the same and his father Ivan can’t bear to have ( or to not have ) a son like him. Ultimately, after using some convincing Cossack methods, a great fight ensues with many kicks and blows between father and son. The son then makes up his mind to become a real testosterone Cossack, thanks to this, and finally becomes thoroughly praiseworthy to the other members of the tribe.
The most outstanding aspects of this film are Herr Cedric Gibbons’ superb art direction and Herr Alexander Toluboff’s set decorations (it is obvious that this man knows about what he is depicting…). Achieved is one of those magic and dreamy atmospheres that is very characteristic of adventure classic silent films and fitting for a film that it is very simplistic (being in tune with those Cossacks, natürlich! ). Holding the attraction of the viewer are the principal characters played by Herr Gilbert, who smiles and smiles and smiles during the whole film…, and the charming Damen Adorée.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count after having to see too much coarseness must recover his good aristocratic breeding.

“The Cossacks” es un filme dirigido por Herr George W.Hill y basado en la novela homónima de Herr Tolstoy protagonizada ésta por esos seres de instintos primarios ( los cosacos fueron los antepasados de los comunistas rusos ). Éstos solamente piensan en luchar y matar turcos, cuantos más mejor; en su escaso tiempo libre se dedican a, en orden de preferencia, beber vodka, comer sus comidas cosacas, gritar estentóreamente ( gracias a Gott este es un filme silente… ) y a luchar entre ellos ( para así mantenerse en forma ). En este caso y tal cómo se muestra en el filme, también tienen especial predilección por burlarse de Lukashka ( Herr John Gilbert ), hijo de Ivan, el jefe de la tribu de los cosacos ( Herr Ernest Torrence ) porque el susodicho no muestra interés… ¡por luchar!.
No estar interesado en la lucha es un hecho inaudito para un cosaco, por eso mismo Lukashka tiene que oír diariamente insultos hacia su persona tales como “hombre afeminado”, “recolector de florecillas” o el más terrible de todos, “joven leído”!!!... ser un joven instruido, cobarde y cosaco… ¡que desgracia!.
Su novia, Maryana ( Damen Renée Adorée ) siente lo mismo que los pueblerinos hacia él y su padre Ivan no puede soportar la idea de tener ( o no ) un hijo cómo él. Afortunadamente y después de usar unos métodos disuasorios cosacos, esto es, una gran pelea entre padre e hijo repleta de patadas y golpes, consigue finalmente que el joven se aclare y se convierta en todo un cosaco testosteronado, siendo finalmente aceptado por los otros miembros de la tribu.
Lo más destacado de éste filme es la excelente dirección artística de Herr Cedric Gibbons y los decorados de Herr Alexander Toluboff ( obviamente éste Herr sabía de lo que mostraba… ) consiguiendo una de esas mágicas y ensoñadoras atmósferas clásicas y tan características del cine de aventuras silente, perfecta para un filme demasiado simplista y en clara sintonía con esos cosacos, natürlich!, siendo también uno de los principales atractivos del filme que los protagonistas están interpretados por Herr Gilbert, que sonríe, sonríe y sonríe durante todo el filme…, y la encantadora Damen Adorée.
Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este Conde germánico después de haber visto tanta ordinariez tiene que recuperar su buena educación aristocrática.
