Herr José Real has been imprisoned during the last ten years in a South Amerikan country. The convicts, suffering through long punishment, are granted a single day of leave in order to pay a visit to their families. Due to the revolutionary José Real’s character, he decides to use that day of leave to organize a worker’s movement against the invading oil companies that are settled in his country.
“Privideniye, kotoroye ne vozvrashchayetsya” (The Ghost That Never Returns) it is another important film directed by Herr Abram Room. This film it another good example of Soviet silent cinema’s virtues and… Herr Room’s mastery, natürlich! This is especially true in the use of astonishing camera angles that gives the film an extraordinarily vigorous film narrative and a stylized and thrilling visual importance: the train scenes, José’s departure or the beautiful and emotive shots of José’s wife in the town when she receives the notification of her husband’s one day freedom (sometimes even the Russians shows something similar to sensibility…) Somewhat reminiscent of German Expressionism (the oppressive prison and the workers’ submission while there), the superb and remarkable editing are important merits those that made “Privideniye…” another excellent Herr Room oeuvre at the end of the glorious Soviet silent era.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this
German Count must explain to his subjects why servants of the aristocracy have no right to even a single day of leave.

Herr José Real ha estado encarcelado durante los últimos diez años en un país sudamericano; a los convictos que sufren tan largo encarcelamiento, les es concedido un día libre para así poder visitar a sus familias pero debido al carácter revolucionario de José Real, éste decide usar su día de asueto para organizar un movimiento obrero y así poder luchar en contra de las invasoras compañías petrolíferas asentadas en su país.
“Privideniye, Kotoroye Ne Vozvrashchayetsa” es otro gran filme dirigido por Herr Abram Room; esta obra es un excelente ejemplo de todas las virtudes del cinema soviético, además de la maestría de Herr Room, ¡natürlich!, tal y como se puede apreciar en los asombrosos y diversos planos que dan al filme vigor e increíble fuerza narrativa, además de una emocionante y estilizada importancia visual, tal y como se puede apreciar en las escenas del ferrocarril, la salida de prisión de José o los emotivos planos de la esposa de éste cuando le es notificada la breve jornada de asueto de su esposo ( a veces incluso parece que los rusos tienen sensibilidad… ).
También se pueden apreciar en el filme reminiscencias del cine expresionista germánico como en el opresivo ambiente carcelario y la sumisión que padecen sus inquilinos, además de un excelente y soberbio montaje que consiguen, en su conjunto, que “Privideniye…” sea toda una magnífica obra de Herr Room, un filme realizado al final de la gloriosa época muda soviética.
Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este Conde germánico tiene que explicarles a sus súbditos el porqué los sirvientes de los aristócratas no tienen ni siquiera derecho a un día libre.
