"Der Grosse Sprung" (1927) By Arnold Fanck

Frau Gita ( Frau Leni Riefenstahl ) is a young and healthy Italian shepherdess fraulein that lives in the Alps. Besides caring for her little brothers and sisters, she has a goat called Pippa that she also cares for a lot. It is probably because of Pippa that she likes climbing mountains all day so very much. This hobby isn’t particularly shared with Herr Toni ( Herr Luis Trenker ) a friend who lives nearby and who prefers to wear typical shepherd’s customary garb ( hat with feather included ) instead of going up and down the Dolomites.
During an unexpected visit to the mountains by Herr Michel Treuherz ( Herr Hans Schneeberger ) – who is an idle, rich and clumsy Berliner – and his valet Herr Paule ( Herr Paul Graetz ), funny situations will happen all around.

“Der Grosse Sprung”, a film directed by Herr Arnold Fanck in the silent year of 1927, is a “mountain film” of that specific German film genre very popular during the 20’s in Deutschland. It’s a picture that contains all the typical and particular film resources that any “mountain film” must have. That is to say, it is a simple and schematic story full of topics in which nature and the beautiful mountain landscapes are the true main characters of the movie. (Let’s not forget also that in many “mountain films” there is a special place for winter sports. Snow skiing is especially included in many of those pictures complete with a thrilling downhill skiing competition at the end of the film.)

On behalf of the mountain film genre, it must be said that those pictures have excellent cinematography ( six cinematographers were needed in “Der Grosse Sprung”! ). This enhances and idealizes the landscapes where the story of the film is based ( aestheticism über alles! ). Memorable too is the skilful and creative editing involved in the inevitable “mountain film” skiing competition. So in “Der Grosse Sprung”, there is obviously one in the final part of the movie. It’s brilliantly developed, full of rhythm ( the camera filming almost from every impossible angle ) and complete with comic situations. Unfortunately, it is excessively long (which is an unfortunate lack in many “mountain films”).

Concerning the mountain films genre, it must be said that those pictures included a shameful collection of topics ... folkloric interests and stereotypes that many times make this Herr Von blush ( a terrible fact this indeed, such momentary aristocratic pallor ). It happens in “Der Grosse Sprung” that Frau Gita and Herr Toni wear picturesque clothes from an Italian catalogue resulting in somewhat less than impressive performances.

At this point this Herr Graf must give the credit to the characters of Herr Treuhez and his valet who are outstanding in the film and a notch above the others actors. The two characters give to the film hilarious scenes as the typical clumsy city ( and rich ) idle boy put into completely different surroundings and his valet, an efficient servant who will help his master as much as he can in spite of dangerous and freezing situations. It must be said that the fundamental principle of any “mountain film” is to entertain in a basic, even naïve way, paying more attention to the snow skiing action scenes and the outstanding landscapes while, not caring at all for a complicated plot. So, finally the artistic aim justifies the means.

Participating in “Der Grosse Sprung” were the mountain film classic triplet, Frau Leni Riefenstahl, Herr Arnold Fanck und Herr Luis Trenker. These were very important and strong personalities and that’s necessary in order to understand this German film genre. They coincided and collided many times during their works together, later to develop different artistic routes. Frau Leni Riefenstahl became the most important of the three and a controversial, tricky but at the same time, fundamental figure of German and world cinema history.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must ask for the doctor in order to cure a few aristocratic broken bones after alpine skiing.

"Chicago" (1927) By Frank Urson

Chicago in the mid 20’s of the last century.

In this modern Amerikan city reside the Hart’s, a young married couple, who adapt to the spirit of the big city. Herr Amos Hart works in a tobacco store and Frau Roxie Hart does absolute nothing but to be unfaithful to her husband with an old man. The old-timer accommodates her whims although this is coming nearly to an end. So when Frau Roxie hears this news; she, who is a bad, bad girl ( besides a peroxide blonde with no brains ... excuse this Herr Graf for such obvious remark ) kills her lover in her apartment.

Desperate over what she has done, she calls for help to her husband telling him that the old man tried to get advantage of her. Herr Hart who is a good man but not stupid at all, discovers what really happened in there. But his love for Roxie is so important to him that he decides to help her by taking the services of a famous, greedy and unscrupulous advocate ( excuse again this Herr Graf for such an obvious remark ); this in order to defend his wife from the death penalty. However, such favour has an expensive price – 5.000 grand that obviously Herr Hart doesn’t have.

During a visit to his greedy advocate, he finds out where he hides a lot of money in his bureau and during the night steals the money ( an honourable deed indeed, to rob an advocate ). Meanwhile Frau Roxie Hart’s famous trial is nearly begun.

“Chicago”, a film directed by Herr Frank Urson in the silent year of 1927, was based in a Broadway play which in turn was based on a true story ( occurring in a real city! ).
Reminiscences of the original stage play in its primal concept can be seen in the film, when the director uses a few sets ( the Hart’s apartment, the jail or the trial court ) in order to develop the story as it were different acts of a play. This is especially during the first part of the film during the dramatic development at the Hart’s apartment and at the end of the movie during the trial. However, Herr Urson makes fairly good use of the proper characteristics of the cinema film narrative in “Chicago” by, constructing excellent visual metaphors ( the jury’s feet responding Frau Roxie charms, the tabloid paper going down the gutter ). There are also important and sibylline sexual remarks that are present during the whole film (ah, that garter bell belt). And let’s not forget the social realism that can be seen in the film ( Chicago daily life or the Hart’s apartment ). Especially outstanding is the power of the yellow press in those old days ( and unfortunately in these modern days too ); the sensationalist journals build up stories on innocent celebrities that certainly have few merits. Naturally this happened with the madcap Roxie, a situation depicted in “Chicago” in a raw and effective way.

Another merit of “Chicago” is the combination of comedy and drama in equal terms highlighting Frau Roxie’s stupidity, selfishness and easy living in contrast with her self-sacrificing husband who suffers the acts and nonsense of his wife. He’s a man who honestly cares about and loves his wife enough to steal and lie for her although this affection and emotion is not returned.

Starring as the couple are two excellent and not well-known actors who handle their roles considerably well. Herr Victor Varconi as Herr Amos Hart is the lovingly and humiliated husband. Frau Phyllis Haver shines and takes all the credit in the picture thanks to her brilliant performance as Roxie Hart, a madcap, simple and selfish modern girl who has no scruples combined with no brains ... who will have a moment of glory as a famous killer thanks to the help of the yellow press ... who will meet her end on the end of a rope … a woman who lives her own life caring for no one except the money.

“Chicago” is an excellent silent movie for all those reasons mentioned above by this German count. Don’t forget also a modern one added recently featuring a superb musical score compiled by Herr Rodney Sauer and “The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra”. They capture the spirit and mood of the roaring twenties of the last century.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must to return to the Schloss from the Windy City.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Von Morgens Bis Mitternachts" (1920) By Karlheinz Martin

What better way to start another thrilling Fall-Winter silent season at the Schloss theatre than watching one of the weirdest and most unusual German silent oeuvres ever made?..

“Von Morgens Bis Mitternachts” ( From Morn To Midnight ), a film directed by Herr Karlheinz Martin in the silent year of 1920, was inspired by the eponymous oeuvre by Herr Georg Kaiser. The film depicts the story of a bank cashier who is bewitched by the visit of a rich Italian lady to his counter. He comes to realize how ordinary his life is but his decision to change things brings about his personal downfall.

“Von Morgens Bis Mitternachts” is quintessential German Expressionism; unfortunately, the film didn’t receive the praise and honours that it deserved because it was never shown in German cinemas ( the film had a cinema release only in Japan ). That wrong can now be rectified thanks to the superb restoration work done by the longhaired youngsters at the “Edition Filmmuseum” who cleaned and restored the blurry copy that was all that was available for years, rescuing from oblivion and Expressionist darkness this exceptional film.

Darkness, a nightmarish mood and even debauchery are key elements in both story and scenery as we watch our hero meet his doom in this strange city full of bizarre people. The art design of the film is absolutely outstanding; its calculated primitivism accentuates powerfully the oneiric theatrical atmosphere. An air of decadence can be seen also in the costumes, strange and otherworldly in unique Expressionist fashion. The acting is in the same vein and Frau Roma Bahn, performs four different roles.

Technically, “Von Morgens Bis Mitternachts” is outstanding and uses many special effects of that early silent time: double exposures, animated scenes, distorted images. Nonetheless, it is still highly theatrical but the mix of expressionism and avant-garde techniques makes for a near hallucinatory experience.

“Von Morgens Bis Mitternacht” is an absolute one of a kind work; unconventional, uniquely imaginative and experimental, avant-garde and very modern in conception for its time.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must enjoy the exclusive aristocratic pleasures from midnight to morn.

"Markens Grode" (1921) By Gunnar Sommerfeldt

Commoners have always had complicated lives; they’ve had to work for what they get and suffer many adversities and woes in the process. They have nothing in common with aristocrats who enjoy the good life without doing anything at all.

That particular and peculiar fight for life is very well depicted in the Norwegian silent film “Markens Grode” (1921) wherein farmers Herr Isak and Frau Inger ( Herr Armund Rydland and Frau Karen Poulsen ) live a rough life in a dry and lonely moor in the North of Norway. When the third child of Inger and Isak is born with a hare lip, Inger decides to spare him a life of gibes and ridicule, preferring to kill him in the greatest secrecy. But she is betrayed and has to spend several years in prison. During her detention, some copper is discovered in the region and the population greatly increases as a result.

So we have a story of many hardships suffered by those pioneers who, in addition to struggling to tame nature, also have to endure even more dangerous enemies such as administrative officials. The number of new people in the area ends up increasing the injustices.

“Markens Grode” was based on a very successful book written by the Norwegian Nobel Prize writer Herr Knut Hamsun. In order to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth ( Here Hamsun is only a kid in comparison with this old German count… ), the Norwegian Film Institute restored the film thanks to two different copies that were available, a nice restoration including the original tints. The film is an interesting piece of silent archaeology especially for this German count who does not know much about Norwegian silent oeuvres. The film has those elements so dear to Nordics: fantastic, supernatural elements connected with nature, the struggle to survive in a hostile environment, and the endurance of human beings against the odds (something that is universal, not just particular to Nordic culture).

The film was directed by Herr Gunnar Sommerfeldt who also has a role in the film. The actors play their parts convincingly and make the audience feel the sorrows and joys of Herr Isak and Frau Inger as time passes inexorably on. It is a beautiful film wherein the Norwegian wild landscape becomes a central character.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must continue to spend an idle and unworried life.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"L'Agonie De Byzance" By Louis Feuillade

The great French film director Herr Louis Feuillade is well-known by silent film connoisseurs as the director of three fundamental, essential classic fantasy serials, “Fantômas” (1914), “Les Vampires” (1915) und “Judex” (1916). He was an innovative, fascinating and imaginative film pioneer who directed films of all genres during his prolific career.

“L’Agonie De Byzance” (1913) is a historical film that depicts the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks, an event that marked the end of the Byzantine Empire. Though this was a primitive era for the silent cinema, Herr Feuillade directs with great skill.

In the early 10’s of the last century, the most basic film techniques as we know them nowadays were not developed and most of the silents were filmed with a static camera in what could be described as little more than “filmed theater.”
Initially this seems to be the case with “L’Agonie De Byzance” too but Herr Feuillade’s mastery shines through.

For example, this oeuvre has a lavish artistic design that recreates in an astounding way the historical facts that the film describes; it was certainly a very important film production with a considerable budget for those old days. There are many extras and stunning sets.

The picture was filmed with a variety of long and medium shots and thus avoids the static stage play effect that this Herr Graf mentioned earlier. For example, when during the Turkish assault on the city of Constantinople, consecutive medium short shots give the sequence emotion and motion that makes a considerable difference in comparison with other early silent films of that time.

“L’Agonie De Byzance” is the confirmation of Herr Feuillade’s talent directing any early film production in spite of the technical limitations of that era; these were defeated by the imagination of the one of the most resourceful film directors in cinema history.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must worry about the fall of one of his rich Teutonic heiress’ empires.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Her Sister From Paris" (1925) By Sidney Franklin

Herr Sidney Franklin was one of those silent film directors whose work is a good example of craftsmanship and style. Unfortunately, his films have not gotten the attention they deserve which is surprising since he worked with many of the best actors and actresses in those silent days.

“Her Sister From Paris” (1925) is a good example of what this Herr Graf is talking about; a stylized comedy that works pretty well although at first sight it might seem a predictable and not very original film.

The film tells the story of Herr Joseph Weyringer and his wife ( Herr Ronald Colman and Constance Talmadge respectively ), they are in a not very amicable Austrian marriage and continually arguing with each other. The last big quarrel between them causes Herr Joseph’s wife, Helen, to make the decision to leave her husband and go home to mother ( a dream come true for any commoner or aristocrat man! ). That same day, Helen’s twin sister arrives in Vienna from the city of Paris where she is a very popular and fashionable artist known as “La Perry”. She will help her sister with her disastrous marriage, planning that her sister impersonates her in order to win back her husband with the last Parisian charms and techniques.

With such a plot, obviously “Her Sister From Paris” is full of funny misunderstandings and confusing situations in which the changing female roles of the main characters ( Frau Constance Talmadge in a double role for the same expensive price ) create seductive scenes ( including an excessively and impudent kiss, too long by aristocratic standards ). The art of flirting is well demonstrated and we learn how a frustrated Austrian wife can transform herself from a dull housewife to a gorgeous modernen vamp and thus save her marriage by making it exciting again.

The actors are splendid; Herr Ronald Colman is perfect as the baffled husband willing to have an affair with his own sister-in-law though later he will feel guilt and torment and discover he does really love his wife, even though she has deceived him (a common situation world wide). Frau Constance Talmadge is equally good transforming herself from a vulgar bourgeoisie Austrian wife to a gorgeous Parisian vamp, a proper flapper of the time. No doubt she was greatly helped in her performance by Herr Franklin who was well known in those silent times as a film director capable of achieving excellent performances from his actresses although it must be said that Frau Talmadge was already a very important and successful comedy actress as can be seen in this deliciously wicked comedy.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count is waiting for a rich heiress’ even richer sister from Saarbrücken.

The 82nd Chaplin Film Found At Antiques Fair!

Long lost Charlie Chaplin film found at antiques fair
A long lost Hollywood silent film featuring Charlie Chaplin is to be screened for the first time in nearly a century after being discovered at an antiques fair.

The comedy called A Thief Catcher was made in 1914 and was missing for so many years that Chaplin's appearance in it as a buffoon policeman had been forgotten.

The 10-minute movie was discovered by the American cinema historian, Paul Gierucki, who bought a can of old film marked "Keystone" at an antiques sale in Michigan.
He assumed it was just another Keystone Cops movie and didn't watch the 16mm reel for months.

When he finally looked at the film, which is in good condition, he was amazed to see what looked like Chaplin emerging from the bushes in a police uniform, several sizes too big, armed with a nightstick.

Mr Gierucki couldn't tell immediately but the actor's distinctive twitches seemed to confirm that it was Chaplin playing a minor role in one of his earliest films.

He showed it to a fellow film collector, Richard Roberts, who said: "I looked at it two seconds and said 'Yep, it's Chaplin.' Even though he's dressed as a cop, the rest of the character is still there – the moustache, the walk, the mannerism. This is a character he'd been doing for quite a while."
In the film Chaplin, who had yet to become famous, uses physical gestures that he would later employ for his most memorable, bumbling character The Tramp. After wiggling and shrugging in a way familiar to millions of filmgoers he delivers some instant slapstick justice by knocking around a group of hooligans.

The movie was made by Mack Sennett for his Keystone film company which produced a series of films about a group of incompetent policemen, the Keystone Cops, between 1912 and 1917.
Many other future stars including Gloria Swanson and Fatty Arbuckle, also began their Hollywood careers at the Keystone studio in Edendale, California.

Sennett had hired Chaplin, then a vaudeville star, in 1913 to make silent movies and A Thief Catcher is thought to have been the second or third film he made for Keystone. The film was shot from January 5 to 26.

It starred Ford Sterling, famous as the chief of the Keystone Cops, and he also directed.
The film also starred the now less famous names of Mack Swain and Edgar Kennedy, with Chaplin appearing on screen for three minutes.

It will be shown publicly this weekend at the annual Slapsticon film festival in Arlington, Virginia.
Organisers believe it is the first time the film has been shown since soon after its release on the eve of the First World War in 1914.

Chaplin made dozens of films between 1914 and 1967 but A Thief Catcher was never listed in his filmography, either by himself or the British Film Institute. It is the first title added to the list in 60 years and becomes the 82nd Chaplin film.

The London-born actor recalled in his autobiography that, apart from his starring role in Keystone comedies, he had also played bit parts as a "Keystone cop" in several films, but he did not give the titles and they were thought to be lost.

More than half of all silent films ever made are thought to no longer exist but A Thief Catcher is not the first to be rediscovered.

A trove of 75 missing Hollywood works, including the 1927 romance Upstream by Oscar-winning director John Ford, were recently found in a film archive vault in New Zealand.

"The Pitch o'Chance" (1915) By Frank Borzage

Aristocrats have few worries in their youth as they know that luxury and excess await them. Commoners, on the other hand, must face many uncertainties and choose between different paths, often facing many troubles before they make the right decision for themselves.

“The Pitch o’Chance” (1915) was Herr Frank Borzage’s first film as a director and as such reflects his rawness and inexperience. There is none of his later style here but it was still important as a learning experience for him and in the development of the professionalism that would result in a more defined directorial style by the end of the 1910s.

“The Pitch o’Chance” is a small scale two reel production showing little artistry. It’s a western wherein the cowboy hero has a fondness for girls and gambling (he’ll bet on anything). The cowboy (played by Herr Borzage himself) must choose between two girlies ( Frau Helene Rosson und Lizette Thorne) who have very opposite characters. Of course our madcap hero will finally change his way of living in that savage land.

Precisely the most interesting aspect in the film is the way that the two different women characters are depicted; one is conventional and a conformist and the other a rebel and untameable. They are two very strongly outlined feminine characters, ja wöhl!.

Obviously Herr Borzage did not have a large budget for his first film (Besides starring, he also wrote the script and edited the film.). With neither money to spend or time to spare, the story must make do with an Indian, a music hall girl and a quick-but effective-shootout. However, the use of the camera is certainly modern and the film narrative intense, including at the end of the film a kind of flash forward wherein our hero promise his girl that he will leave behind a life of gambling and vice for a conventional one with marriage and children ( from bad to worse, certainly… ).

“The Pitch o’Chance” is an interesting Herr Borzage early film, necessary to watch for completists and in order to observe the artistic progression in the career of one of the most important Amerikan film directors of the last century.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must bet on which rich heiress loves him the most.

"Steamboat Bill, Jr." (1928) By Charles Reisner

It is certainly true that aristocrats have had many prejudices (among their other virtues) since the world was created; but it is also true that commoners have also their share ever since the world aristocrats began their rule. Bearing this in mind, it is not, for example, an easy task for a city and clumsy boy (Herr Buster Keaton) to be admitted in a small town even by his father, especially if he one in one of those rude typical men (Herr Ernest Torrence) that inhabit those villages, a crude man that pretty soon is shamed by the mild manners of his own son. If besides this there is in the little town a feud between that father and a powerful neighbour of the village (Herr Tom McGuire) about the river steamship business, then a lot of problems are in sight. They are worsened even more when our hero, the clumsy city boy, is also a friend of the powerful river impresario’s daughter (Frau Marion Byron) who he knows from college. Theirs is a complicated relationship that obviously both rival fathers can’t allow because everybody knows that aside from commoners’ prejudices, love and business can’t be mixed.

“Steamboat Bill, Jr.” (1928), is another delightful comedy starred by the great and unique Amerikan actor Herr Buster Keaton and directed by Herr Charles Reisner.
In such hilarious silent film you can watch a lot of pranks and choreographed pratfalls so peculiar in many Herr Keaton’s films as well as those wonderful and subtle little funny details that this German count likes and loves so much. For example, consider how complicated it was to choose a fashionable hat in those old days! Imagine a father trying to shoot his own son when this one changed his city outfit for a proper captain suit… or other more complicated and elaborate sequences as it happen in this film such as the well-known wind storm scene. That’s a famous scene that even today astonishes the modern audience for its difficulty, precision and complicated order that displays a master combination of effective home-produced special effects intertwined with gags and action. All of this done without losing a bit of rhythm and hilarity makes for another unforgettable silent Herr Keaton classic comedy. It’s one of those films that any silent film fan (even stiff aristocrats) enjoys at any time in any place for decades.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must avoid sailing his yacht too close to the wind.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

"Montparnasse" (1929) By Eugene Deslaw

As you probably will know by now, mein liebers, this German count prefers the cosy dark and humid Schloss chambers and is reluctant to put his aristocratic feet outside its thick walls, This is due to laziness, the aristocrat’s favourite vice from among the seven deadly sins. So if someone were to suggest an outing to a place crowded by frenchified commoners and-even worse-artists- there is little chance this German count would risk going to such a dangerous place.

Fortunately, this Herr Von hasn’t the need to makes such a risky expedition because Herr Eugene Deslaw did it for him (and for all aristocrats) by making his short film “Montparnasse” in the silent year of 1929. Thanks to Herr Deslaw and his cameraman, this Herr Graf, together, with youngster silent fans, can watch the daily life in that well-known district of Paris from a safe distance. Montparnasse has been famous since the beginning of the last century for being a home and workplace for artists ( painters, sculptors, writers, film directors ). The film shows them at work and finds time to spend in the popular night spots in the district (no surprise there, given the leisurely manner of living for those bohemian artists).

Herr Deslaw creates an interesting historical portrait of Montparnasse popular life: we see artists and commoners (no close-ups for them of course), people going to work and lingering in cafes; heavy traffic; the crowded market place; much frenzied activity. While there are elements of surrealism at work in the film, it puts aside the experimental techniques common in other important silent “city films” and strives more for lyrical realism and a documentary approach. To this Herr Graff, “Montparnasse” provides a valuable witness to a fruitful artistic time in one of the most famous districts of Paris.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must sell a Picasso owned by one of his rich heiresses.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

-/-

"Romeo Und Julia Im Schnee" (1920) By Ernst Lubitsch

The Capulethofer and the Montekugerl are two Teutonic families who are enemies because of an old dispute that even the courts couldn’t resolve. This feud affects the younger members of the families as well, natürlich! Complications arise when young Romeo ( Herr Gustav von Wangenheim ), Herr Montekugerl’s son, comes back home after some years of absence. He falls madly in love with Julia ( Frau Lotte Neumann ), Herr Capulethofer’s daughter. This makes the enmity between the families even worse and Frau Julia is forced into an engagement with an innocent and clumsy boy. Desperate and seeing no hope that their families will ever understand them, the lovers decide upon a terrible solution: they will end their lives with poison.

Probably those learned longhaired youngsters who have read this Herr Graf’s synopsis of this film named “Romeo Und Julia Im Schnee” ( Romeo And Julia In The Snow ), directed by Herr Ernst Lubitsch in the silent year of 1920, will know that it is not an original story by the German director but a free adaptation of the classic Shakespearian play “Romeo And Juliet”. Of course, Herr Shakespeare himself was not adverse to borrowing stories from others for his own purposes and Herr Lubitsch was no different, having done adaptations of “Carmen” from Herr Prosper Mérimée’s novel , the opera “Don César de Bazán” and Herr Oscar Wilde play “Lady Windermere’s Fan” and handling all of them in his own original style, achieving marvellous films full of wit, irony, irreverence and laced with the particular Germanic sense of humor and sarcastic gags.

For example, Her Lubistch introduces to the audience the origins of the enmity among Montekugerls and Capulethofers with a clever prologue wherein the Verona families in Herr Shakespeare original manuscript become genuine Teutonic families who live in a typical snowy German village; A sibylline and wonderful gag in this part of the film finds both families trying to bribe the judge with two similar big sausages. The sarcastic judge resolves the complicated issue by weighing both sausages in the scales of the symbol of justice and deciding in favour of the Capulethofers because their sausage is heavier.

The film continues along the same lines with both families caricatured in an hilarious way. Funny too is the masked ball sequence where Romeo fools both Julia’s father as well as her naive fiancée so he can be with his beloved. Then there is the climax where the distraught lovers decide to take their lives and repair to an apothecary to buy the poison (he actually just gives them a mixture of sugar and water). They find they don’t have any money but the sardonic apothecary just tells them, “Pay me some other time.”

“Romeo Und Julia Im Schnee” is another delicious Herr Lubitsch early silent film, remarkable and original ( with Herr Shakespeare’s permission ) and a good example of a drama being effectively turned into a comedy thanks to the artistry and genius of the director.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must court his own Teutonic Juliet.

Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien

-/-

"Die Hermannschlacht" (1924) By Leo König

Deutschland is under the power of Rome; the heartless Empire, ever in need of new conquests, is merciless and its legions pillage and sack throughout the land with deep Gallic hatred. Hermann, son of the Cherusci prince Segimer, is a hostage at the service of Rome and has been given the name of “Armin.” Ultimately, he will lead an army of his countrymen and drive out the Roman tyrants.

“Die Hermannschlacht”, directed by Herr Leo König in the silent year of 1924, is a classical Teutonic silent film in its concepts and idiosyncrasies, It contains many of the elements that a genuine German count likes very much: exaggerated Teutonic myths and habits ( for example, how Germans invented euthanasia which, in those old says, consisted of throwing yourself down a hill when the end is near-a trifling matter when you know Walhalla awaits ), angry Gotts, epic nationalism and rude bearded Germans warriors wearing fur costumes with matching helmets with horns or wings ( fashionable ancient modes). The Romans may be the villains of the film but at the time of the film’s release, German audiences would be thinking about the French occupation of the Ruhr area.

It must be said that Herr König, in order to depict those ancient times in “Die Hermannschlacht”, made accordingly a film that, in artistic aspects, seems as primitive as the Cherusci tribes. Of course there are problems within the German tribes including traitors, collaboration with the enemy and divided families but any genuine Teutonic will find the film his cup of tea (well, the Germans prefer a jar of schnapps )as the story is about his ancestors and will enlighten those unfortunates who are not Teutonic. The actors playing those rude old Germans do so in a very histrionic manner and sometimes the film sees older than the Cherusci tribes…

“Die Hemannschlacht” was old fashioned even at the time when it was made, and today it seems deliciously kitsch but it’s a unique and genuine primitive Teutonic silent, ja wohl!.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must free one rich and fat heiress from her corset.

"Die Börsenkönigin" (1918) By Edmund Edel

Frau Helene Netzler ( Frau Asta Nielsen ) is the owner of the copper mine “Glückauf”, a mine that is nearly depleted and this threatens her financial situation. Fortunately the director of the copper mine, Herr Lindholm ( Herr Aruth Wartan ) has good news for Frau Helene: he has found a new copper vein that promises great supply. With this in mind, Frau Helene orders that all the shares of the copper mine, that for many days inflated the stock market, be bought up. At the same time, as a token of her gratitude, Frau Helene promotes Herr Lindholm to partner of the copper mine. Frau Helene’s new partner is interested in Frau Lina, Frau Helene’s cousin, a poor girl who lives at the mansion as a lady companion. To complicate matters, Frau Helene is also in love with Herr Lindholm.

Die Börsenkönigin” ( The Queen Of The Stock-Exchange ), directed by the unknown Herr Edmund Edel in the silent year of 1918, is a very suitable oeuvre for these days in which the world stock market and global financial crisis are much in the news. Speculators, brokers, greedy share-holders and other strange specimens did their work in the silent days as well, making a good living for themselves but leaving the commoners behind.

Our heroine, Frau Helene Netzler knows that in order to maintain her life of luxury she must keep the level of production of her cooper mine very high. The new vein gives her the opportunity to speculate in the stock-market and increase her wealth; that’s the way the bourgeoisie make a lot of money. Of course these games are only possible thanks to the efforts, sweat and hard work of their employees.
This makes for some interesting social and historical themes in the film and they are brought out in an almost documentary way given that real copper mine workers appear as extras in some of the scenes ( it is not necessary to say that they didn’t receive extra wages for their extra work ) . These poor men and women worked hard in terrible and unsafe conditions in contrast to the luxury and comfort enjoyed by their masters who live in wonderful mansions surrounded by magnificent gardens and having at their command businessmen in tuxedos and top hats, reflecting in this way the contradictions of a Germany defeated in the Great War.

As the Teutonic saying goes, “Don’t mix pleasure with business”, and Frau Helene unwisely ignores this wisdom and shares her heart as well as her mine with Herr Lindholm. It will take a divine intervention to set things right and cause Frau Helene to recover her cold and Germanic senses ( essential for a Teutonic businesswoman).
Frau Asta Nielsen plays properly her character in a film where business is business and the matters of the heart are simple accidents that can be put aside and forgotten easily if luxury and power are at stake. Of course in this modernen world the upper classes will likewise never be at risk as long is there are financial subterfuges and the working classes to foot the bills.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must convince his rich heiresses that Herr Graff is a good investment.

75 Early U.S. Films Unearthed In New Zealand

A cache of 75 long-lost silent films uncovered in the New Zealand Film Archive vault, including Herr John Ford's "Upstream" (1927) is being sent back to Amerika to be restored.

Well, it wouldn't have been necessary going to New Zealand in order to find those long lost silent films; you would have saved a lot of money if instead of traveling to those far away lands, had just paid this Herr Graf's enslaved servants the extra costs involved in a deep and thorough cleaning of the Schloss humid cellar. There lies storage piles of old nitrates since the last century and in there you can find anything that you can imagine. However, due to this Herr Graf's greed it seems that a lot of time will pass until these have surfaced from darkness...

"The Navigator" (1924) By Buster Keaton & Donald Crisp

Herr Rollo Treadway ( Herr Buster Keaton ) is the quintessential Amerikan millionaire; he is an idle and helpless rich heir so consequently he has eccentric habits like taking long walks or diving, not to mention travelling in an adrift ocean liner called “The Navigator”, unexpectedly chartered only for him and for Frau Betsy ( Frau Kathryn McGuire ), Herr Rollo’s rich neighbour who our hero decides to marry . These two spoiled rich people will do in “The Navigator” what they know best; that is to say, nothing at all.

After morning exercise on the ship’s deck and some problems trying to get used to the empty ocean liner ( a very complicated matter to go through your daily routine without a valet) Herr Rollo und Frau Betsy will find their place in the ship ( exactly at the bottom of it ) and will familiarize themselves with the Navigator’s facilities, ( once they wear proper sailor-fashion tuxedos, natürlich! ) . They come to understand how to properly use kitchen gadgets so they can make breakfast and they learn how to use rare and complicated boat apparatus such as folding chairs and lifeboats. Just when our rich friends are finally enjoying their cruise, unexpectedly the Navigator runs aground on an island full of hungry cannibals and then our wealthy and helpless heroes are-typically-in trouble.

As you can see, mein liebers, certainly there is a lot of danger at the sea for our woeful millionaires but finally both of them will overcome their troubles and find safety. Their incredible adventures –including even some underwater scenes- can be found in “The Navigator· (1924) directed by Herr Buster Keaton und Herr Donald Crisp, a classic and funny silent film that can be considered as one of the most important silent films wherein a ship is the main character of the oeuvre ( Of course, we must not forget the battleship Potemkin and the passenger liner Titanic, natürlich!!...). After all, Herr Rollo und Frau Betsy had their own special revolution aboard and the Navigator finally and incredible was afloat!.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must sail the Teutonic seas.
