Lotte Reiniger's Short Films

In these long-haired times in which the new technologies rule and spoil almost everything, it's very gratifying (and therefore recommended) to resurrect the classics, even more so if we are talking about animated films.

The films of Lotte Reiniger provide a perfect example, these unmistakably unique silhouette films still today retain intact the same magic and beautiful imagery that they did when they premiered during the late, lamented golden age of the Weimar Republic, when this German Count was a promising dilettante and decadent young aristocrat They are perfect illustrations that outrageously expensive new-fangled technical effects are not required to make animated films if the filmmaker has enough imagination.

Since seeing the famous "Die Abenteuer Des Prinzen Achmed" (1926) some years ago, this German Count has recently been able to acquire for his private film archive a collection of Lotte Reiniger's short films based upon very popular, well-known stories. Dangerous modern youth as well as older people (menacing or otherwise) can enjoy nowadays the varied adventures of the heroes of these animated stories, full of moral lessons and instructive didacticism that the authors of those times were so fond of including in their stories, and that this German Count has come to understand and appreciate after long hours of reflection. I direct you, for example, to the yearning for improvement of "Cinderella" and "The Gallant Little Taylor" (as always, the middle-class envying the aristocratic way of life), the (sometimes) truism that size doesn't matter in "Thumbelina," the dangers of glucose in "Hansel & Gretel," or the maxim that vengeance is a dish best served cold so delicately delineated in "The Grasshopper And The Ant."

And now, if you'll allow me, I must leave you momentarily because this German Count must remove the dust from the magic lantern to be used at this evenings soiree in order to surprise my guests with the latest modern inventions.

En estos tiempos melenudos en los cuales las nuevas tecnologías lo dominan y desvirtúan casi todo, es siempre grato y recomendable por dicho motivo, recuperar a los clásicos, mucho más necesario si hablamos del cine de animación.

Lotte Reiniger es por todo ello un magnífico referente, su cine de siluetas inconfundibles, mantiene intacto hoy en día la magia y belleza de cuando fueron estrenadas dichas obras durante los tiempos de la República de Weimar , cuando éste Conde germánico era ya por entonces un prometedor joven aristócrata decadente y diletante, un buen ejemplo de que para hacer cine de animación no hace falta grandes medios técnicos y sí mucha imaginación.

Este Conde teutón ha podido ver recientemente en su filmoteca privada una colección de sus cortometrajes ( además de su célebre obra “Die Abenteuer Des Prinzen Ahmed, una referencia incontestable para el cine de animación, años ha ), basados éstos es cuentos populares; tanto jóvenes peligrosos cómo ancianos igualmente dañinos y actuales, pueden seguir disfrutando de las diferentes peripecias de los protagonistas de esas historias animadas tan repletas de moralejas y cierto didactismo que los autores de antaño tanto gustaban incluir en sus relatos y que éste aristócrata germánico ha entendido, tras largas horas de reflexión, cómo, por ejemplo, el ansia de medrar de “Cenicienta” y “El Sastrecillo Valiente” ( las clases populares siempre envidiando a la aristocracia… ) el tamaño no importa ( a veces ) de “Pulgarcita”, los peligros de la glucosa de “Hansel Y Gretel” o la venganza se sirve fría de “La Cigarra Y La Hormiga”.

Cuentos populares y la animación clásica repleta de lirismo de Damen Reiniger, la mejor combinación.

Y ahora si me lo permiten les dejo momentáneamente, pues este Conde germánico tiene que desempolvar la linterna mágica para la “soirée” de ésta noche y así sorprender a mis invitados con los últimos inventos modernos.
