"Mod Lyset" (1919) By Holger-Madsen

The Countess Ysabel is a frivolous aristocrat who toys with men and their feelings in the same way that she played with dolls as a child - a customary habit among the aristocratic frauleins. The terrible thing about Damen Ysabel is that she is an atheist!!! Can you believe that, mein liebers, an atheist Countess in Denmark?!.

The professor Manini's daughter, Inga, loves her cousin Felix but he only has eyes for Ysabel, a fact that doesn't very much please the Baron Sandro Grec, who also has eyes (the aristocrats share some vital organs with the ordinary people, but the difference is that we use monocles) for the Countess Ysabel. The Baron also likes to play cards at the club with the help of a cue man.

While those lovers see each other, there is a preacher in the city, Elias Renato, who is devoted to the homeless people and to spreading the gospel at any occasion. During a rest in the park he will save the life of a poor orphan, Wenka, who wants to commit suicide in the park's lake because all she has in this world is a brutal alcoholic step-father and an alley cat as a friend, but now thanks to Herr Renato's help she also has a preacher in her life.

Felix, Ysabel's unrequited lover, knows that she is engaged to the Baron Grec and made desperate by this information he decides to commit suicide, leaving a note to the Countess (alas, this time the preacher was not around because he was too busy devoting all his time to creating "The Island Of The Homeless," a kind of asylum for poor people on an island not far from the city).

The professor Manini (his poor daughter Inga now alone without her Felix) torments the Countess at her very home telling her that "what a man sows shall he also reap," a very interesting quote considering the fact that the Countess is a woman. Regardless, Damen Ysabel doesn't feel any remorse about Felix' suicide and she continues her atheistic ways as always and goes off to marry the Baron Renato, despite the bad feelings relayed to her by her own mother about him.

During the wedding the cue man is arrested and he tells everything about those cards tricks to the police, who finally discover that the Baron Renato is not a Baron at all but Leon Spontazzi!!! The Countess Ysabel is informed of this terrible news (certainly it is impossible for a Countess to continue a relationship with anyone possessed of such name!) and the no-longer-a-Baron is arrested in the carriage by the police when the couple returned to their palace. So finally the bride finds herself home alone with terrible thoughts, remembering that terribly prophetic quote, "what a man sows shall he also reap."

Do you remember Wenka? Well, by now she is at the island of the homeless, nursing people, and because it is a small world she is nursing Ysabel's mother who is seriously ill. Meanwhile, outside the palace Elias Renato is preaching and, thanks to the music accompanying his sermon, Ysabel is moved (if music can tame wild beasts, why not an atheist Danish Countess?). She enjoys the company of the priest while en route to the island but there - Ah, what a wicked soul she is!! - she will try to tempt the vicar with her riches, as did Herr Devil with Herr Jesus von Christ in the desert, but in vain. Ysabel returns to the mainland where she learns that her mother has died. In desperation she does strange things - like preaching!! - at last, the redemption of a sinner!!.

Do you remember Wenka's father? Well, by now he is at the island of the homeless, still a drunkard just as in the good old days when he was with his step-daughter. True to his nature he treats her wickedly and also accidentally sets fire to the whole village. The fire is seen on the mainland and Ysabel sails to the island, but now as a religious Danish Countess, and there she declares her love to Elias Renato and her devotion to the glory of God. After their marriage the happy couple divide the blessed work, the vicar spreading the word of God and Damen Ysabel doing the same but with a guitar, because she knows that if the music could tame a Countess, why could it not do the same with the unwashed hordes?.

Another interesting Nordisk film production starring Asta Nielsen and directed by Herr Holger-Madsen, with remarkable film editing that pleasantly surprised this German Count.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must try to redeem himself in case there is a Danish Countess lost in sin at the next soirée who wants to do it.

La condesa Ysabel es una frívola aristócrata que juega con los hombres y sus sentimientos de la misma forma que lo hacía con sus muñecas cuando era una niña ( una costumbre habitual entre las fräuleins aristócratas ), pero lo más terrible de Damen Ysabel es que ella es una… ¡atea!.... ¿pueden ustedes creer esto, mein leibers?... ¿una condesa atea en Dinamarca?.

La hija del profesor Manini, Damen Inga, ama a su primo Félix pero éste solamente tiene ojos para Ysabel, un hecho éste que no le agrada demasiado al Baron Sandro Grec, que también tiene ojos ( los aristócratas también comparten ciertos órganos vitales con la gente ordinaria, pero la diferencia es que los primeros usan monóculos ) para la condesa Ysabel; además el susodicho Barón también gusta jugar a las cartas en el club pero eso sí, con la ayuda de un soplón.

Mientras esos amantes se ven unos a otros, aparece un predicador en la ciudad, Herr Elias Renato, que se preocupa por la gente sin hogar además de difundir el evangelio a la mínima ocasión; durante un descanso en un parque, éste salvará la vida de una pobre huérfana, Damen Wenka, que quería suicidarse en el lago del parque porque lo único que tiene en este mundo es un brutal padrastro alcohólico y un gato callejero como único amigo, pero ahora y gracias a la ayuda de Herr Renato, también tiene un predicador en su vida.

Félix, el amante no correspondido de Ysabel, se entera de que ésta se ha comprometido con el Barón Grec y desesperado al conocer dicha noticia decide suicidarse, dejando una nota para la condesa ( lamentablemente en esta ocasión el predicador no se encontraba cerca porque estaba muy ocupado dedicando todo su tiempo a la creación de la “Isla de Los Sin Hogar”, una especie de refugio parar la gente pobre situado en una isla cerca de la ciudad ).

El profesor Manini ( su pobre hija Inga ahora sola y sin su Felix ) atormenta a la condesa en su misma casa diciéndole que “lo que un hombre siembra será recogido”, una muy interesante cita incluso teniendo en cuenta que la condesa es una mujer… a pesar de todo, Damen Ysabel no siente ningún remordimiento por el suicidio de Félix y continúa con su habitual vida atea, casándose igualmente con el Barón Renato y a pesar de los malos presentimientos que tiene la madre de la condesa y que ésta le cuenta a su hija.

Durante la boda, el soplón es arrestado y confiesa a la policía el asunto de los trucos con las cartas, descubriendo finalmente que el Barón Renato no es tal sino Herr Leon Spontazzi!!... la condesa Ysabel es informada de tan terribles noticias ( desde luego es imposible para una condesa continuar una relación con alguien que tenga un nombre como ese … ) y el ya nunca más Barón es arrestado por la policía en el carruaje en el cual volvía la feliz pareja a su palacio, encontrándose finalmente a solas la susodicha en su palacio recordando la terrible cita profética, “lo que un hombre siembra será recogido”.

¿Se acuerdan ustedes de Damen Wenka?, pues bien, ella se encuentra ahora en la isla de los sin hogar, cuidando de gente y como el mundo es un pañuelo también cuida de la madre de Damen Ysabel que está gravemente enferma; mientras, en las inmediaciones del palacio, Her Elias Renato continúa predicando y gracias a la música que acompaña su sermón, Damen Ysabel se conmueve ( si la música puede amansar a las fieras, ¿por qué no a una condesa atea danesa? ); la susodicha acompaña al predicador a la isla de los sin hogar, pero una vez allí ( ¡ah, pero que alma malvada! ) intentará tentar al vicario con sus riquezas, como hizo en su día Herr Demonio con Herr Jesús Von Cristo en el desierto, aunque en vano; Ysabel vuelve entonces a tierra firme y allí se entera de que su madre ha muerto; desesperada realiza actos extraños como… ¡rezar!... ¡por fin, la redención de una pecadora!.

¿Se acuerdan ustedes del padre de Damen Wenka?, pues bien, el está ahora también en la isla de los sin hogar, todavía alcoholizado como en los viejos tiempos como cuando estaba con su hija; fiel a sus principios etílicos sigue tratando a su hija de forma malvada y accidentalmente también prende fuego a todo el pueblo; el fuego es visto desde tierra firme e Ysabel navega hacia la isla, pero ahora como una condesa pía danesa, declarando allí su amor por Herr Elías Renato y su dedicación al Señor; tras su boda, la feliz pareja se reparte el trabajo, el vicario predicando la palabra de Dios y Damen Ysabel haciendo lo mismo pero con una guitarra, pues ella sabe bien que si la música ha conseguido amansar a una condesa, ¿por qué no podría hacer lo mismo con las hordas impías?.

Otra interesante producción Nordisk interpretada por Damen Nielsen y dirigida por Herr Holger-Madsen, un filme con un destacado montaje que agradó especialmente a este conde germano.

Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este Conde germánico tiene que intentar redimirse siempre y cuando en la próxima soirée haya una condesa danesa pecadora que quiera hacerlo.
