Magda meets Knud, her future fiance, in a casual way during a tram trip; at the same moment both fall madly in love with each other. A few days later, Knud, whose father is a minister, invites Magda to spend a thrilling weekend at the vicarage with his parents.
During the weekend, a circus comes to town, Magda becomes infatuated with a cowboy who performs at the circus. She immediately exchanges her nice but boring fiancé for the hefty cowboy. Without much thought she runs off with him.
The relationship between Magda and her cowboy quickly becomes very problematic. Magda's life becomes one of torment, jealousy, suspicion and frequent humiliations. The nice but still boring fiancé appears from time totime and tries to draw Magda away from the abyss of passion but his efforts are ultimately in vain.
“Afgrunden” is a film directed by the great but unfortunately not well known Danish director, Urban Gad and stars Asta Nielsen whom Herr Gad discovered and married.
Despite the story's sometimes simple and exaggerated melodrama, Herr Gad endows the film with a stunning modernity in style as well as content. He is able to diminish the deficiencies typical of 1910 film. And we must of course stress Damen Nielsen's screen presence and versatility (it is necessary to emphasize the Damen Nielsen erotic dance scene; in this way you’ll see how modern and alluring your grandmothers were ), Herr Gad 's direction and Damen Nielsen's performance are reasons enough to watch this early Danish film.
And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because when this Teutonic Count thought about stormy relationships in the film, he was reminded there were some fat German heiresses who needed his attention.

Magda conocé a su novio, Knud, de forma accidental en el tranvía y ambos quedarán prendados al instante el uno del otro; días más tarde, Knud invitará a Magda a pasar un excitante fin de semana en la casa del párroco, su padre.
Mientras Magda pasa tan peculiar fin de semana con su prometido, llega al pueblo un circo; Magda se quedará prendada inmediatamente del hombre que interpreta a un cowboy, cambiando de inmediato al fornido cowboy por su aburrido prometido, escapándose ambos sin pensárselo dos veces.
La relación entre Magda y su cowboy comenzará a ser muy problemática, tormentosa, llena de engaños, celos y humillaciones por parte del cowboy hacia Magda, relación que a pesar de contar en varios momentos con la intervención del antiguo novio formal de Magda, el del fin de semana excitante en la vicaría de su padre, para conseguir que salga de ese abismo de pasiones desfrenadas, todos sus esfuerzos serán finalmente inútiles.
“Afgrunden” es un filme realizado por el gran director danés, desafortunadamente poco conocido, Urban Gad y protagonizado por Asta Nielsen, actriz que Herr Gad descubrió y con la cual se casó en su día.
A pesar de ser el filme un melodrama esquemático y exagerado en muchos momentos, Herr Gad consigue dotar siempre a sus filmes de una modernidad en forma y contenido que consigue minimizar esas carencias típicas, por otra parte, de una producción temprana de los años 10, por no mencionar la siempre magnífica presencia y versatilidad de Damen Nielsen ( hay que destacar la escena del baile con alto contenido erótico que interpreta Magda en el teatro con su cowboy, para que comprueben lo modernas y sensuales que eran sus abuelas ), dos razones más que suficientes, la dirección de Herr Gad y la interpretación de Damen Nielsen, para ver este filme temprano danés.
Y ahora si me lo permiten les dejo momentáneamente, pues al oír hablar de relaciones tormentosas, éste Conde teutón ha recordado que tiene que hablar algo al respecto con varias de sus gordas herederas germánicas.
