“La Fille De L’Eau” is Jean Renoir’s first film; Renoir is very well recognised by the longhaired generation, due especially to his sound period; this is a youthful film, and we all know how bold the longhaired are during their early lives..
A melodramatic air can be noted in the film’s storyline; it tells the story of Damen Gudule (characterized by the director’s muse, Catherine Hessling) a girl who goes through many and varied misfortunes, the sad details of which this aristocrat will enumerate.
Gudule works with her father and uncle in a scow, up and down river (first disgrace: a girl working, and to makes matters worse, in such a vulgar place); when her father accidentally drowns, her uncle tries to abuse the poor little orphan.
Weary of this harassment, Gudule runs away and leaves the scow behind, uncle included, and joins a group of low life people (the lady reads cards and the boy is a petty thief, occupations not very commendable especially the lady’s one); due to Gudule’s unlimited charms she soon attracts another undesirable suitor but the petty thief rescues her honour. When the little orphan rejects the young pursuer’s further indecent proposals, the rejected scoundrel, helped by some neighbours, decides to burn the wagon of her new family.
Alone, without wagon or family (they ran away during the fire), the tragic Gudule’s destiny becomes bleaker still with the reappearance of her uncle, who asks her to finance his pitiful life. The hapless young woman then is instructed to rob the house where she is now working and where she has attracted the young Master (another mishap; the intimacy between different social classes).
The young Master, when he discovers that his dearly beloved has been extorted by her uncle, decides they must get rid of such an unpresentable family member and defeats the evil uncle in a tough fight; Gudule's new heartthrob takes the young woman with all his family to Algeria (as though poor Gudule hasn't suffered enough; now she must endure the tacky holiday destination chosen by her lover).
In spite of the film's imperfections and undefined style, this German count was impressed by Gudule’s dream sequence with its obvious surrealist influence, it fascinates the spectator with its strange and suggestive shots; it is mainly because of this that the film deserves to be seen.
And now, if you allow me, I must temporarily take my leave due to the fact that this Count needs to called to order too, some unpresentable family members.

“La Fille De L’Eau” es el primer filme realizado por el director francés Jean Renoir, director de gran prestigio entre los melenudos sobretodo gracias a su etapa sonora, siendo éste un filme de juventud y ya se sabe cómo son de atrevidos los melenudos en edades tempranas.
Un aire folletinesco se deja notar en la historia del filme en el cual se nos cuenta la historia de Damen Gudule ( interpretada por la musa silente del director, Catherine Hessling ) una chica a la cual le pasan infinidad de desgracias varias y que ahora mismo éste aristócrata se las enumerará para que quede constancia de ello.
Gudule trabaja en una barcaza, río arriba y río abajo, con su padre y tío ( primera desgracia, trabajar una chica y lo que es peor, en un sitio tan poco elegante ); al ahogarse de forma accidental el padre de Gudule, su tío enseguida intentará abusar de la pobre huerfanita.
Ante el acoso familiar, Gudule huye y deja a la barcaza con tío incluído, atrás, uniéndose posteriormente a una gente de mal vivir ( la señora es echadora de cartas y el chico un ladronzuelo, profesiones éstas como podrán comprobar nada recomendables, sobretodo la de la señora… ); como los encantos de Gudule no tienen límites, enseguida se verá acosada por un lugareño del lugar, siendo siempre defendida su honra por el ladronzuelo.
Al rechazar la huerfanita las proposiciones indecentes del joven acosador, éste, ayudado por unos vecinos, decide prender fuego al carromato de su familia de acogida.
Sola, sin carromato y sin familia ( la echadora de cartas y el ladronzuelo en cuanto han olido el fuego han huido ), el trágico destino de Gudule se verá incrementado al aparecer de nuevo en escena el sátrapa de su tío, exigiéndole ahora que le financie su disipada vida, por lo que la joven se verá obligada a robar en la casa en donde ahora trabaja y en donde también el señorito de esa familia se siente atraído por los encantos de Gudule ( otra desgracia más, intimar clases sociales diferentes ).
Finalmente y tras una dura pelea entre tío y señorito al descubrir éste último que su amada está siendo extorsionada y amenazada por el mismo, conseguirán librarse de tan impresentable familiar, llevándose el joven, junto con toda su familia, a Gudule a Argelia ( última desgracia para la joven, elegir su amado un destino vacacional tan poco elegante ).
A pesar de imperfecciones y estilo indefinido de la obra, hay que destacar de forma notoria en el filme, la secuencia onírica de Gudule, de clara influencia surrealista y que fascina al espectador por sus extraños y sugerentes planos, motivo éste por el cual el filme merece mucho la pena ser visto.
Y ahora si me lo permiten les dejo momentáneamente, pues éste Conde debe también llamar al orden a ciertos familiares impresentables.
