"Lazybones" (1925) By Frank Borzage

“Lazybones”, directed by Herr Frank Borzage was the beginning of this director's most fruitful period in the silent era. Like Herr Borzage's other most important and remarkable silent films,“Lazybones” was produced for Fox.

“Lazybones” tells the story of Steve Tuttle ( Buck Jones ) “a man as slow as molasses in winter” so the people gave him the nickname of “Lazybones” a man with many unrequited loves that he will sacrifice in a languid way true to his character.
The film combines a refined sense of humour with a kind of melancholy melodrama developed by excellent actors who are perfect in their different characters. Buck Jones was mainly famous for his cowboy roles ( And Borzage himself was also noted for his early westerns ). Steve's opposite is JaneNovak (Zasu Pitts) , a victim of her strict mother, and who is a fragile character with little chance for rebellion in a town where convention rules and keeping up appearances is a very important matter.

In this film nature and the landscapes are very important too and become subtle characters in their own right. They sometimes reflect the different moods or the special way of life of the different characters of the film, ( sunny, idyllic and carefree for Lazybones and unsettled and windy for the women ). The decisive importance of the background shows an European influence, especially from the Danes and Swedes.
The film is also an excellent example of the Herr Borzage mastery of storytelling and pacing. Technical effects, flashbacks and camera movements are combined in such an imperceptible manner that the audience can feel and sense the inexorable passing of time in an elegant, sad but beautiful way…,this German count, who lacks some of the common human feelings, still thinks that makes for poetry, doesn't it?

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must go stretch.

“Lazybones”, filme dirigido por Herr Frank Borzage, supuso el inicio de la época más fructífera y exitosa de su época muda y tal y como acontece con esos filmes más importantes y destacados de dicho período, “Lazybones” fue producido por la Fox.

“Lazybones” nos narra la historia de Steve Tuttle ( Buck Jones ) “un hombre tan lento como la melaza en invierno “ por dicho motivo la gente le puso el sobrenombre de “Lazybones” ( vago ), un hombre con varios amores no correspondidos que él sacrificará de forma lánguida y acorde, por lo tanto, con su carácter.

El filme combina un refinado sentido del humor con un sentimiento de melancolía y melodrama, desarrollado éste por excelentes actores perfectos en sus diferentes personajes; Buck Jones era por entonces un actor muy famoso por sus papeles de “cowboy”, lo mismo que acontecía con Herr Borzage y los “westerns” de su primera época silente; junto a Steve está Jane ( Zasu Pitts ), víctima de una madre estricta y persona de débil carácter con pocas oportunidades para rebelarse en un pueblo en donde los convencionalismos y las apariencias son realmente primordiales.

Es este filme, la naturaleza y sus paisajes son también muy importantes, convirtiéndose en sutiles personajes con propio protagonismo, reflejando éstos las diferentes formas de entender la vida o la idiosincrasia de los diferentes protagonistas del filme, ( soleado, idílico y despreocupado para “Lazybones” o ambientes de mucho viento e inestables para las mujeres ); ese aspecto decisivo de los escenarios refleja una gran influencia europea en el filme, procedente especialmente de cineastas daneses y suecos.
El filme es también un excelente ejemplo de la maestría de Herr Borzage en cuanto al ritmo y a la narrativa cinematográfica; efectos técnicos, flashbacks y movimientos de cámara combinados de forma imperceptible para que la audiencia sienta el inexorable paso del tiempo de una forma elegante, triste pero igualmente bella… y este Conde germánico que no posee ningún sentimiento humano, cree que en eso consiste la poesía, ¿no es cierto?.

Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues ese Conde germánico tiene que desperezarse.
