"Sumka Dipkuryera" (1927) By Aleksandr Dovzhenko

“Sumka Dipkuryera” ( Diplomatic Pouch ), directed by the great soviet film director Herr Aleksandr Dovzhenko, is based on the true-crime assassination of Soviet diplomat Teodor Nette, and it’s an excellent spy thriller. It tells of the harrowing attempts to retrieve the slain envoy's pouch in order to return it by boat to Russia before it can be found it by the British secret police.

The pace of “Sumka Dipkuryera” is taut and the film is full of classic suspense situations typical of the detective /spy type genre. The varied and claustrophobic backgrounds enrich the story in a compelling way. Some longhaired critics claim that “Sumka Dipkuryera” was influenced by the German Expressionist film but this German Count sees the inspiration coming more from the different avant-garde European film movements, especially the Frenchified films.

Herr Aleksandr Dovzhenko , besides being one of the most important film directors in the history of the cinema ,was a ( Russian ) avant-garde pioneer and this film is a great example of this assertion. We can see Herr Dovzhenko's modern techniques in his use of the camera which creates some astonishing and remarkable moments. With great subtlety the camera becomes another character of the movie, moving in perfect coordination with the action of the boat crew (At one point, a sailor hoses down the camera and another one throws coal to it ) The camerawork is sometimes very stylish ( the port/train sequence ) and at other times experimental ( the accomplished sense of movement entwining shots of the power engine with sailors tap-dancing amidst the heaving of the sea ) This German Count has been always astonished too by Herr Dovzhenko's mastery in depicting human physical suffering in all its tragedy. The beginning of the film with the wounded Russian diplomat shows his pain and death in a direct way with powerful but stark imagery.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must hide something important in his particular diplomatic pouch that must be delivered secretly to a German fat heiress in the next soirée.

“Sumka Dipkuryera”, filme dirigido por el grande director soviético Herr Aleksandr Dovzhenko, basada en el asesinato verídico del diplomático soviético Teodor Nette, es un excelente filme de espionaje en el cual se narra las dificultades para devolver la valija diplomática del agente asesinado, a Rusia, vía marítima y antes de que sea encontrada por la policía secreta británica.

El ritmo de “Sumka Dipkuryera” es tenso y emocionante y repleto de típicas situaciones de suspense habituales en este género de filmes; los claustrofóbicos y variados escenarios enriquecen la historia de una forma realmente interesante y aunque algunos críticos melenudos mencionan que “Sumka Dipkuryera” tiene influencias del cine expresionista alemán, éste Conde germánico ve muchas más influencias provenientes de las diferentes vanguardias europeas de la época, sobretodo de los filmes afrancesados.

Herr Aleksandr Dovzhenko, además de ser uno de los más importantes directores de la historia del cine, fue uno de los pioneros ( rusos ) del cine de vanguardia, siendo este filme un buen ejemplo de dicha afirmación en el cual se puede comprobar el gran dominio de Herr Dovzhenko tanto en el uso de la cámara como de las nuevas técnicas, creando momentos memorables y ciertamente sorprendentes.
De una forma imperceptible, la cámara se convierte en otro protagonista más
del filme, integrándose perfectamente con el resto de la tripulación del barco ( durante diferentes momentos, un marinero da un mangerazo a la cámara y otro arroja carbón a la misma ), además de tener un gran estilo ( la sensación de movimiento creada al concatenar planos de los motores del barco, con unos marineros bailando claqué en medio de un mar embravecido ).
Este Conde germánico además siempre se ha mostrado sorprendido por la maestría de Herr Dovzhenko a la hora de reflejar el sufrimiento humano de forma nada complaciente, trágica, siendo una buena muestra la escena inicial del filme en la cual se ve al herido diplomático ruso al borde de la muerte, poderosas imagines, severas secuencias.

Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este Conde germánico tiene que esconder algo muy importante en su particular valija diplomática que posteriormente tiene que ser entregada secretamente en la próxima soirée a una gorda heredera germánica.
